Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 announced, up for preorder (based on Crystal Cove)

My order date

Too bad I was abroad for work and didn't notice the pre-orders were up until I got home, I would have ordered it right away.

Hope 2 days isn't enough to miss the first batch.

I remember Palmer saying there were around 12,500 pre-orders in the first 36 hours. So I hate to say this, but I'd expect an August delivery with the chance of being pleasantly surprised.

And I'm in Europe too, so I'm not really expecting to see it delivered before August.

I'll enjoy the summer more xD

I originally penned Jul 15th as Oculus Rift day a month ago. Looks like I was close, assuming I am in the first batch (ordered at 9:06 AM on the first day).

I got in at 9:32 (American time) according to my email.

I'm in the UK so I'm wondering if I will be one of the early ones.

Time will tell.

Just because it got buried at the bottom of the last page:

Everyone else is having the same message on the sales page ?

Just to make sure this is not a bug.

I ordered mine around noon PST on the first day so I expect to be in the first batch. I'm insanely excited to start experimenting with VR.

I'm in the same situation, especially because IMO there's no true valuable upgrade for my OC'd 660 Ti at the moment, the 7-series is just disappointment all over, and I've seen very little interesting info about the 8-series as well :(

I just bought Asetto Corsa and a G27 wheel, I hope there's a way to drive that @75Hz with my 660 Ti.. But I don't know, I'm afraid that it might not be enough..

20-30% VR overhead + 25% 60-->75 Hz increase is about 50% more power needed, no?

You can definitely run Assetto Corsa on 75 frames per second, you'll just have to lower a few settings. :) I'd disable HDR and motion blur, and reduce the resolution of cubemap reflections. If you need more performance, put your shadows on medium.

You could always reduce AA but AA actually helps a bunch in VR, so I'd try to keep that if you've got it.

I needed to wait for funds to unlock and had to sit there from the moment preorders opened until 3:30PM PDT, ~7 hours in.

If by just over 5000 they mean 6250, that would be half of the 12,500 orders made in the first 36 hours. I guess it all comes down to how big the initial surge of orders was and how many units are sent to the US, but it's looking like an extra month of waiting, sigh :(

I got in during the first hour, so I know I'm good. Feels good. I missed the first few batches on the DK1 because I was on vacation with sporadic internet.

Yea I made damn sure that this time I wasn't go to have to sit around an extra 3 months after everyone else starts getting theirs. Waiting for that DK1 was hell. And the whole US customs fiasco to boot...please don't let that shit happen again...

So much for 30k units in July..
I went back to check about this:

Only orders after a certain point (I think it was some time in April or May when it changed) are pushed back to August. Early orders are (or hopefully are) on track for July. Since it is a developer kit they are doing a modest production run and can only make so many per day.

There are about 40,000 pre-orders and Nate says they are shooting to ship 20-30,000 of those in July.

At E3 they said they were expecting to ship 20000-30000 DK2s in July. The rest of the preorders should be shipped by August.

Fair point, and I really hope they manage to have that sort of throughput now with all the money and Facebook support. I'm just very cautious/cynical after the 5+ months (my memory is fuzzy, number may be inaccurate) it took to get the DK1 preorders out. :P I'm probably closer to the start of orders on DK2 than I was on DK1 however.

I'm not expecting any major issues this time around. The situation with the DK2 compared to shipping the DK1 are so different that I don't think it's a concern anymore.

If it's down to 10,000 now that is indeed a bit less. :P I'm hoping I will at least have one by September if I ordered the first day.

I'm in early. I should get it ASAP.

I only got a 580 here, seriously debating jumping on a 780ti but I might want to wait auuugh idk

how early did you order? I was looking at the order data they are collecting over at Reddit, and it suggests (I know it is a non random/biased set of data) that there were about ~3000 orders in the first hour, and ~3000 in the second hour, and then another 6,500 over the next 34 hours. So if they ship 5000 in July, people who ordered in the first 90 minutes will probably get one, and anything after that, who knows. I ordered at 9:57, and I doubt I'll get it in the first. :(

edit: updating my math, based on reports of 12,500 sold in the first 36 hours, and an estimate of 6,000 in the first two hours based on the reddit spreadsheet.

This is just guessing, I have zero insider info or anything but I wouldn't expect them to ship them exactly in the order they were sold. I'd expect them to simply divide (not evenly of course) their inventory among the different distribution centers, and that's assuming they decide to send units to every region... it's entirely possible that if you belong to a zone with few orders you'll have to wait till august/september, even if you were literally the first person placing their order.

Confident that I'm in the first batch. Unless their going to shift around the priority between real devs and wannabe devs like me (I would actually be ok with that).

Wouldn't it be the other way around? I live in Switzerland and I assume that there aren't many orders from my region. So I should get my DK2 in 2 weeks.

I myself ordered at 10:04 AM PDT so even I'm not sure.. Your estimate of the first two hours though are a bit high don't you think..?

Well, other things come into play like division between distribution centers and such. Add to that what Palmer stated regarding division of units with Japan first, US second, Europe third and the rest of the world after.

While the chart's useful, I think it's sort of skewed by the polling audience being a pretty dedicated sub-reddit who would comb for information pretty often. Like how 85% of people use 64-bit OS's in Steam's Hardware/Software Surveys because the sort of person to even be on steam would be ontop of that more than anyone else.

To tell you guys honestly, we should really just wait.. Once people start getting emails, we should have a clearer picture, but right now we just don't have enough information.

If there's anything we can all agree on, it'st hat Oculus is way behind schedule. I can't imagine when people who've ordered during E3 or such will get theirs. August might be out of the picture.

Hell, I don't even know why they still have August listed for orders right now..

Edit: Just checked, seems like new orders are now slated for September.

I remember checking last week saying new orders ETA August.

Anyway, placed my order at 11:09am PDT so I'm hoping it's in the first batch.

Mar 19, 2014 08:32 AM PDT

However, last time, Oculus really screwed up the shipment to Norway, so I'm not holding my breath. They were absolutely horrible with keeping us informed as well, so I'm not expecting much.

Thought id check mine and see how it fits in the timeline:

Well goddamn, this is a huge bummer.
Only ~5000 DK2s shipped from distribution centers in July? What the hell?
How is this fuckup even possible considering DK2 have been around for a couple of months and them shipping ~100 DK2s last week to certain developers.
They handled this announcement pretty horribly, now I just hope they at least will let us know around what time the first 5000 and 10000 orders were made and some more info.
I mean, is 1000 DK2s of the first batch still allocated to Japan only, meaning only ~4000 to the rest of the world in July?
Guess they're gonna let us speculate and wait another month though as usual, I'm not expecting mine until August regardless of me ordering 2 hours after announcement.

Damn, I ordered mine about 4 hours after the announcement. Was really hoping to get it this month. :(

Sales page still says Pending for me.

Yeah, I totally agree, it is a biased sample. But on the other hand, the kind of people who would order it on the first day are probably pretty hardcore and have a high overlap with Reddit, GAF, and the Oculus forums. I look at as the worst case scenario. I do think the time distribution is interesting, and probably really does indicate a real disproportionate amount of ordering in the first two hours.

Ha, if the potential of a 1 month delay annoys you this much I hope you weren't around for DK1.

You should've been here for the DK1 shipping. No info about anything until it suddenly came out. The forums over at Oculus were a battle field.

And what's the deal with that extremely cumbersome status page? Why do I have to type in my email and recieve an URL every time I want to check it, when there's a fully functional log in on the site?

Hehe, I wasn't around that time (I've read a lot about it though), not really annoyed that much by the delay either, just by how they handled this whole thing.
Announcing a delay in the actual month where we expected it to be shipped, when they only a few weeks ago estimated 20-30k shipped in July, on top of the lack of information, that's what annoys me.
Otherwise I'm just bummed out, since I'm really looking forward to my first Rift experience.

At least I'd hoped for they'd learnt something from the debacle of DK1.

I ordered at 02:21 PM PDT so I guess I'm getting delayed. Thought for sure they would be able to ship all the first day orders on time. Pretty disappointing they are struggling. I need to update my payment card details too so I've got to stay glued to my email to update them and avoid even more delays.
