Smash Bros.: Miyamoto actually requested Pac-Man in Brawl

Comes from Sakurai's bi-weekly column in Famitsu, translated by Kotaku:

"During development of Smash Bros. Brawl, Mr. Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo approached me and asked, 'Can't we have Pac-Man as a guest character?'" Sakurai recalled. "At the time, imagining the image of Pac-Man and his incomplete pizza shape, I thought to myself, 'Hmmm... That's a little too farfetched.'"

He also talk about making a character, and how it's far from being as easy as players sometime make it out to be:

While it's easy to imagine a character in a Smash Bros. game, on the dev side, there's a lot more to consider.

"How to give the character their own individuality as a fighter and how they'll move. Should the game system maintain a consistent form or not. What other fighters are there and how will the new character differ in strategy? Does the new idea fit with the original game? Most importantly, is it entertaining?"

Sakurai then ponder on how stuff can change over time, because just like the Mii which didn't make it in Brawl but made it in Smash 4, it's the same for Pac-Man:

"You never know what's going to happen in this world." Sakurai remarked. "I'll just keep my mouth shut. That's a good idea."

Finally, Ridley is Smash 5 CONFIRMED:

I honestly assumed some key staff of Namco would of pushed on the idea of Pacman being a fighter. Whilst chuckling.
Surprising to hear Miyamoto requested it, though.

The real interesting part of the article is the fact that Sakurai at first didn't think Pac-Man could work, and then says that "anything can happen in this world".

I am all for new third party characters. But please don't let Snake be gone. Take the other clones, but don't take my Snake.

Considering how konami have snubbed Nintendo when it comes to metal gear games (only an intentionally sabotaged 3ds port of mgs 3 and Fuck all else) snake don't deserve a place

This kind of reasoning is just annoying.
Who fucking cares, I want more good characters in Smash Bros.
Also, I really don't think Nintendo is interested in having MGS on WiiU & 3DS anymore. If they were, MGS would be on those consoles.

That's why I love Miyamoto: he's old-school. Nowadays games are all about realism and graphics, but this man knows fun like no other. I don't agree about everything he says, but you got to respect the man for keeping Nintendo what it is: "keep it simple, stupid."

Well Villager also confirmed that things can change as he did state before he didn't think an AC rep was suitable for Smash.

Snake got a place because he was on NES and GCN. That hasn't changed. He still deserves a place.

Miyamoto-san: add Bomberman, please? =_=

Cool story. Nice to hear him pull fot the Pac! Namco is oddly one of the last companies I directly care for in Smash, but it's good to see at least him.

Ever since the Ninytendo Land minigames, I wish Nintendo got control of Hudson's properties. Konami is letting them waste away...

Of course they're interested, they're just not interested enough to pay for it and I don't blame them

For me it's never a question of deserving. When a character looks/plays good in Smash Bros., it's OK by my book. I wouldn't be against even Sony exclusives like Jak and Ratchet if that was even possible.

So... They're not interested.
They know MGS doesn't sell on Nintendo, hence they're not interested in having it.

Given that David Hayter-Snake has been retired, it's almost certain he's cut. Sutherland-Big Boss being in Smash Bros wouldn't make any sense.

Miyamoto is a huge Pac-Man fan, I gather. One time he made a Pac-Man clone with four players for Gamecube but Namco didn't sign off to turn it into a published game.

Releasing 2 and 3 together on vita for the same price as just 3 on 3ds is blatant sabotage

3ds is a pretty different game though, with a load of unique features. The vita game is just a port. despite the performance of the 3ds version I'd imagine a lot more time was put into that.

Which makes it all the more ridiculous releasing the vita ports so close

The failure of Pac-Man VS. and all the GBA-GCN link stuff should have been a big warning flag to Nintendo not to try any of this "second screen" bullcrap again, and yet here we are...

That was because of cost: buying two or more separate systems and cables. Wii U removes all that. Hardly comparable.

Huh, that's neat.

The link stuff didn't fail because of the core concept, you know. It failed because it required you to buy a bunch of stuff you may not have already had.

It's so weird that they pushed that concept so hard for a year. Yes, it's a cool concept. But it's a fun party-game concept that required hardware that (for the most part) only a hardcore player would own. It seemed like a mismatch. Plus, that was the year that they started saying things like "people don't want to play online" which made them seem more out of touch than ever.

I never had an opportunity to play 4Swords+, Pacman Vs., or FF:CC. I still want to, though. Pacman Vs. on Wii U seems like a no-brainer eShop title.

I really don't understand if this is a joke or something

Would Sutherland read out lines about people flying around by farting?

I'm pleased that Miyamoto actually requested him to be in the game, and I'm glad that it happened tho.

Well Done, Sakurai and the teams.

He should have asked for these "girls" to get into smash Japan would go crazy. But i like pacman too so that was a good choice.
