going to watch some Ryan themed content today while at work... probably start with the CAH PAX panel from last fall.

can't believe its been a year already.

People should probably put what they want to be listed by in the comment, for the letter that someone else will compose to go with this. So I can pass on the name list when we get to that. We're already up to $80 in paypal btw.

I didn't do that, but I'd prefer to be listed as "Abendlaender" which is my username on GB.

I liked her letters feature she does with another journalist and wasn't following GB when she famously got drunk on a podcast so I'm definitely down for this, but perhaps it would be better to set up a donation or contribute to one of the scholarships given to women interested in making video games? I'd have to do some research but feel like that may be more appropriate.

Americans like everything cold, I was shocked when I visited the UK and ordered a beer at a pub and it was room temperature.

I think they advertise 4°C, but yeah, doesn't sound that bad.

It's definitely just a minor inconvenience, and the very definition of a first world problem, but the degree (hurr hurr) to which it bothers Rorie is kind of endearing.
 
Well fuck.
I almost never use paypal and now my account is limited for some reason. I can't send my $10 so put me out of the list for now while I try to figure this out.
 
Sent $5.00, let's save Rorie from this warm drink nightmare.

If we have surplus i think we should just use it for the fridge deocrating or sending a 12 pack of soda with it. Sending a card to people or donating money to an organization should be a separate thing imo.

What kind of pub was that?! Whenever I've been in London for work the beer has always been cold.

Amsterdam was pretty sweet though, even the glass was ice cold at the pubs I went to.
 
I like the idea of apologizing to those who suffered the brunt of the harassment, but that sorta feels like something that might not be our place to do, you know? I'm worried that it could come across as patronizing and/or insulting rather than something genuine, especially given that the community has a long way to go before it's better at this point. I think the donation to a scholarship or something similar might be the better idea.

(Don't you just hate when your browser crashes and you have to retype a post?)

It was either in Richmond or Feltham, can't remember. I don't like warm beer :/.

They were probably serving it somewhere around 12C, not room temperature. If you're used to drinking beer ice cold it's going to feel much warmer, of course.

You don't taste shit if the beer's freezing, so good beer is better when it's a bit warmer :)
 
Isn't beer having to be served cold just a marketing thing?

I remember that from an article about videogame marketing ("No girls allowed"):

There are plenty of ideas that have been sold to populations through marketing — ideas that go deeper than what color Santa wears.

"There's not a lot to distinguish between American canned and bottled beers like Coors and Miller, and they were having a hard time figuring out what they could market," she says. "It was Coors that said, 'We are the coldest of the cold. We are brewed in the mountains; we ship in refrigerated trucks.' They put a stake in ice-cold beer and people literally began to think and continue to think to this day, 'I've got to drink my beer ice-cold.'"

Of course, there is a practical reason for drinking beer cold: Chilled beer is harder to taste. Coldness neutralizes the flavor, which makes many beers — particular cheap beers — more drinkable. "So it actually does a really great job on two levels," she says. "It convinces you that you need to have a cold beer, and you actually think this product is superior because it doesn't taste as bad as the competitor, which is slightly warmer."
