No end in sight with the awesome Indie releases, and this thread is a way of helping everyone to wade through the lesser known games or even share opinions on the heavy hitters. Last month it was a rather close call with the votings, where many of us didnt find the time to try and post impressions on as many games as usual. If you read this, random thread lurker, a single vote on a game could have made the difference between being in our voting or not. Other than that, last months thread saw a nice rise in activity overall, but we should neglect the voting or I'll just recommend whatever I want :P

| 3.5 Quick Note about Formatting |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you want to suggest a game that has recently released or that looks interesting, but hasnt released yet, please follow the following formatting structure so the post is picked up by Toma-Bot:
Released games:
TITLE - PRICE (PLAT)
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Not yet released games:
TITLE - PLAT
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Copy the appropriate content and add the proper information for the black writing. Please only include 1 link and 1 image. I tried making it a bit failsafe, so it should be able to deal with 2 links or images as well, but 1 is safer.
If the game is free, then put "Free" as the price, otherwise please use $ or € for the price. You can also include more than one game per post (like the Screenshot saturday posts), but please stick to the above format for every entry.
If someone posts a non-proper formatted post, I'd appreciate if you could repost the game with the same info in the proper format.
Hey! I assume you are new in this thread series and want to see what we were up to? Or you didnt have enough time to play through all of the games from the last month but still want to catch up with the best ones? Then this list is for YOU! These were the games we enjoyed the most in the previous thread, voted on by the community (More thorough descriptions and impressions in the previous thread, especially the last few pages with the voting):
1. Epic Flail - Free alpha (Browser)
ss2.png
http://www.spacenoize.com/EpicFlail/
Very simple highscore game and surprisingly fun. You only one move which you need to use to outmaneuver enemies: Dashing. With increasing difficulty, you also collect the equipment of enemies, which doubles as your armor/increased health. Beauty in sublime simplicity, everyone should try it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

2. Jet Force - $2,99 (currently 50% off) (PC)
Wn8MqfJ.png

http://www.desura.com/games/jet-force

Its a retro inspired run&gun shooter with varied enemy designs, interesting boss battles, a decent amount of challenge without being overly punishing, VERY good movement "physics", which are emphasized with the games jet mechanic and an interesting & frantic power up system.

2E2CKvW.gif

http://www.piratehearts.com/blog/games/you-have-to-win-the-game/

Fun! A little bit of tricky platforming, a lot of exploring without any directions, a mysterious castle, devious traps, tight controls and some metroidvania style level exploration. Lovely, little game that you guys definitely should check out.

A calamity is coming and you embark on a journey to stop it. You only have 400 years.This is an experimental game about the passage of time. Don't expect swift action. Slow down and think, just don't wait too long...

2. Shütshimi - Free Demo/ $1 (PC, Mac, Linux, X360)
vhZXvNE.png

http://shutshimi.com/

Bucketload of weirdass random(ized) shmup fun. The different powerups, their weird descriptions and the quickfire levels come together really nicely for this rather interesting little title.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2. Kitsuni - Free (Browser)
Bn2jLVFIMAEcP4S.png
http://www.seconddimension.co.uk/games/Kitsuni/index.html
A puzzle adventure game of sorts in which you are tasked with collecting gems to solve a mystery. Some puzzles are a bit obtuse, while others are painfully obvious, but its still an intriguing affair overall, even if most of my enjoyment derived from looking at the pretty art style. Worth checking out in any case, even if a bit simplistic.
I noticed there are a few noteworthy, and relatively unknown, projects that deserve a shoutout here because I feel that they share a common interest with the people in this thread. I talked to the guy from Pixabyte and MetaVendetta and both are very enthusiastic about the things they love and figured you might appreciate the shoutout as well. If you enjoy anything here or want to give feedback, let these guys know via their websites or also here in this thread. If you appreciate something, let people know. A heads up can sometimes very valuable.
ii9XSD5.png
This is a monthly podcast series that presents notable Indie Game soundtracks. A likeable host and guests, a fantastic track selection, interesting discussions and a focus for Indies will make this one a mainstay in my monthly threads.
[Wolfenstien | Elysian Shadows | Trials Fusion | Fract OSC | Out There | Parappa the Rapper]
My very own, highly amateur game impressions YT channel. Its a bit of self-pimping, but since I only make videos for games of this thread, I think it might as well be included here.
RycZUyF.jpg
http://te4.org/
This game is, and I am not saying this lightly, one of the best roguelikes I've ever played. I love these games, but the way the game is structured, how the mechanics come together, the incredibly satisfying loot improvement curve, the way how most characters play fundamentally different and just how much stuff there is to find and see... is mind boggling. The initial release was an older game, but its still frequently updated, so I'll just honor it by including it here again. The game is not super pretty and screenshots might not be overly convincing, but its fan-fucking-tastic.
"Cypress" is presented in 1080p High Definition. All objects and animations in the game are hand-painted with acrylic and colored pencil, scanned, and stored internally at 300dpi. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
| 8. Addendum - Most and totally supersayjajin-level undeservedly overlooked game from the last thread that no one except me played and you should totally give a look |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I am using my thread creator powers to post, once again, about Grid Legion, Voyage, until you guys either damn it to hell and give me feedback that my gaming taste is rotting or agree with me that its a lovely game (or any middleground).

http://www.desura.com/games/grid-legion-voyage

My initial impressions:
Sooo, there you have it. My highlight for this month.Apparently for SP, there really are only the tutorial levels and 4 "proper" levels with 4 difficulties, but even those should keep you plenty busy if you like the combat system, with the promise of competetive, cooperative and draft plays coming soon. Its a Collectible Card battle game with quite a few interesting ideas, of which the most important one is the battle arena itself. The battle area has 5 rows, which limits the usability of the cards as most cards can only be placed in certain rows, which creates a very interesting dynamic to considera certain combination of cards in favor of others or whether to waste action points on relocating cards to make space for others. That aspect is even further developed by the individual grid tiles, which have different effects and bonusses, that may range from "no unit can be build here", over "any building here gets will be activated faster" to "a unit here gets +5 damage".
The amount of different possibilities and ways to plan/restructure a battle layout is incredibly appealing as there is quite a lot to consider. The tutorials do a great job of easing you into the game, but unfortunately, and here is my biggest gripe, it seems like the "Single Player campaign" really only consists of tutorials and 4 (challenging) levels in the end. You'll still probably get 6-8 hours of content out of this game if you want to finish the content, but its a bit of a wasted opportunity to downright unlock all cards of every color instead of earning them a bit slower in a better paced campaign with different and eventually more devious arena grids. Anyway, even considering this, the concept and current execution is very, very good (outside of the stupid fog filter). Bonus points for an intuitive and easily usable control scheme even without a mouse and the ability to marvel at the full size art work done by several DevianArtists, for which I assume he got the permission.(Press A on a card and then S on the picture). Very well thought out battle system, nice art work, deep tactical possibilities and challenging combat. Ace.

I should get around to make a video on this, let me know if there is any interest.

And thread open.

Posts now actually filled with information. If you find any mistakes, post it here and its corrected by tomorrow.

I really need to play that Tobias game sometime this month, it looks like a feat in insanity.

Also, great work Toma and Toma-bot for the thread.

I don't know if it's good or bad that 95% of the games in both Released and Upcoming are from my posts. On one hand, it's nice to be provide a lot of content and I enjoy doing the Screenshot Saturday posts. On the other hand, some diversity would be nice

The August thread might look kind of sparse because I'm going on vacation for the last two weeks of July

Its always bad to rely on a single source for that kind of stuff, but Desura was exceptionally bad last month. Usually I find ~15 interesting titles, last month it was 6 or something.

And we need more people voting, we have 5 2nds this month, lol.

Errors I noticed:

"Best of May" - Should be June

Inside My Radio, Monochroma, Pocket Robots Test Chamber, QBEH-1, Spectrum, Substratum, Seaworthy, Unnamed game have various formatting errors.

Yes, it is. Make a thread called "Good read: Why I quit my PhD at MIT to start a gaming studio" and link that. Feel free to mention that we'll feature the game in the current Indie Game thread for July if someone checks it out and wants to post some impressions.

Posting again for visibility.

Don't know if this is new thread worthy, but one of the founders of Prismata released a blog post today detailing the inspiration, work required, and sacrifices made in designing their game. It's a delightful read on how an indie studio came together with a fantastic idea for a game!

Here is the link to the full blog post.

As a bonus, since I posted, the gameplay video has been released!

Just got Towerfall for free from US PS+ and played it with a friend. This game is ridiculously fun in MP.

But to be perfectly honest, I am glad I didnt pick it up for $15 before on PC, this game is a COOP or VS game, anything else is just a small cherry on top.

I didn't realize this till yesterday, but Super III is essentially a Frog Sord reunion. The lead programmer and artist of Frog Sord are working on the game. They're planning a Kickstarter for early August

I suppose now'd be a good place to mention that Freedom Planet's website updated somewhat. Most notably, the Download page now has a new demo, with all of the updates present in the current private betas (such as tweaks to moves and updated sound effects) and, more importantly, half of stage two, Relic Maze, now available for your enjoyment (in addition to Dragon Valley again).

July 19th can't come soon enough.

Yep. Freedom Planet needs more attention, damn it, it needs a thread of its own. It's a bloody amazing game, Shovel Knight has competition for the year's best platformer.

Tizoc and I are still working on the |OT|, but GAF rules are that |OT|s can't be published until a week before release.

I'm still without a computer and the one I'm currently using is pretty old and even slower than my laptop, tough I should be able to play mostly of the simple stuff. Vagante is currently downloading so I may post my impressions after playing it for a while.

Mainly lurking and most of the games I'm interested in are at the trailer stage, so heh.

Doesnt mean one of the others games couldnt possibly surprise you :P

Every month I have a few games that end up surprising me, which is lovely. But yeah, going through these games hoping a game will positively surprise you can be a rather daunting task.

I tend to rarely post interesting games I see for a couple reasons. The first is that if it seems like it is going to have a wide appeal (relative to the audience of the thread, not in general), I assume someone else will get it first (and provide better info) so I don't waste time on it. The second is that I tend to have specific styles of games I like and I feel like I am just constantly evangelizing the same "types" of games.

In regards to the voting, I always mean to do that but I usually don't end up trying more than a couple of the games that catch my eye so it feels weird to vote when only playing near the minimum required.

Everybody still in post-steam sale mode? Not many interested people here this month.
It is usually a few days for me to find the new thread each time they change over. If I don't add it to my subscriptions right away I end up missing it until I think about or see it pop on the front page when I am browsing. I know I said "I" in here a lot but these could be similar issues for others as well.

Funny enough, I only bought Delver during the Steam sale. No, I'm presently in Post-pre-ordering-both-versions-of-Smash Bros. [4]-at-the-same-time Mode. Given I only save $60 per paycheck for games, comics et al, that was quite the dent in my pocket!

Annoying, because I really want to play Shovel Knight right now, but can't afford its modest $15 entry fee.

Momodora III - $4.99 (PC)

I saw Pietepiet (Nuclear Throne dev, GAF member) streaming this yesterday. Looked insanely short, but I don't think I've ever heard cuter screams of agony come from anything.

Any comment about any Indie is fine in here. I am evangelizing certain games to death as well and since this is the only thread I can do that in, you are all stuck with it :p

No seriously, let us know what kinds of stuff you play, what you liked if you have any random thoughts. This thread should be way more open to those discussions.

It varies from song to song. We actually wrote the music first then built the scenes around the ideas we got from listening to each song on repeat. It's a lot of rhythmic tapping and swiping mostly. This video shows someone actually playing it. There's no text or UI in the game so it only communicates with you through it's visuals and music. It's very much a game about getting lost in a groove for a while.
