Captain Falcon was unlockable more times than not. See Smash 64 & Brawl.Captain Falcon could still be a starter.
Also, it's still possible that they'll reveal unlockable characters before release.
Round 1 (Before E3 2013): "Animal Crossing Guy" (Villager), Wii Fit Trainer, Mega Man, Little Mac, MiiSpeaking of Pac-man and leaks, can we get a recap of all the gemetsu leaks?
For those who haven't seen/heard: Pac-Man press reaction
There was no risk. Why do you think the crowd would boo a Pac-Man reveal? It's fucking Pac-Man.

So was Marth.
Not sure about Marth's case (maybe Chrom's taking his place as the unlockable FE character), but Luigi was only revealed early for the Year of Luigi, & has a good chance of remaining unlockable. Regardless, I remain in the firm camp believing that we won't see Captain Falcon, Jigglypuff, or Ness until the game hits Japanese 3DSes.So was Marth.
Marth is on the 3DS box art, he's most likely a starter. We still don't know for certain that he's not, either.

But people grew up with Sonic, they didn't grow up with Pac Man.

Pac Man was regularly torn down as a newcomer, even here on GAF. Everyone is quiet now because we got the confirmation, but Smashboards in particular hated the idea of Pac Man in Smash.
This is because Pac Man hasn't made any notable contributions to gaming beyond his initial debut, which you're either nostalgic about or you're not. Lots of people connect Pac Man as an 80s novelty that never successfully translated into any of his subsequent games. Pac Man was not a universally beloved character.
But then again, the Sonic was had in Brawl was about to check into rehab after his own latest string of games. But people grew up with Sonic, they didn't grow up with Pac Man.
I'm not meaning to start any sort of conversation about Pac Man's validity as a character, but to say there was no risk is probably incorrect. If Nintendo was lurking Smash communities, they would know that there were some very vocal fans who were staunchly against his inclusion.

Round 1 (Before E3 2013): "Animal Crossing Guy" (Villager), Wii Fit Trainer, Mega Man, Little Mac, Mii
Round 2 (Before Smash Direct): "Pokemon from X & Y" (Greninja), Chrom, Shulk, Chorus Men, Palutena
Round 3 (Before E3 2014): Lucas is likely cut, Character DLC is a thing
Thanks. The remaining characters leaked are Chrom, Shulk, and Chorus Men. But it's not comprehensive and DLC is pretty much a given. The other leak was that Lucas might be cut, but that's not really a certainty one way or the other.

Still someone thinks that Sakurai can't come up with a nice moveset for Shulk though. They'll never learn.
LOL so?
Haha. That's hilarious. I can't believe how excited they were.

You might want to dig deeper, there were children back in 1980 too.
I can't find sources, but I'm sure they've been around before that too.
Is this a joke?Because, who the hell cares about fucking Pac-Man? I certainly don't. I was against his inclusion until he was revealed, and I know I wasn't alone in that. If his moveset didn't look so god damn fun, I'd still be somewhat against it. If you really think there was no risk, then I don't think I could convince you. But this is E3. People make huge deals out of nothing all the time at E3. If they didn't include him because they thought there was a slight risk, I don't think it was stupid of them to do so.
He's totally obscure and nobody played his game.Is this a joke?
I can't believe I'm seriously arguing about Pac-Man's popularity.
Come on, that's not what I meant. Children in the 80s, especially in America, know Pac Man as an arcade staple. But he was outmoded by Ms. Pac Man in the states and has never had a strong fan base on consoles. This is the first Smash to even be throwing arcade fans a bone with content like Wireframe Mac and all the Namco stuff. Plenty of Smash fans had an attachment to CONSOLE characters, because they grew up with consoles, and arcades were not a big part of their youth.
Lol, are people really arguing that Pacman's inclusion isn't a big deal and that no one cares about him?
Yup, see you guys later.
Pac-Man is iconic of the 80s and video games in general. His original games (and Ms. Pac-Man) had huge popularity. The character is still known worldwide. He totally belongs in Smash and it's great that he's there. I mean the guy predates everyone else in the cast except Game and Watch. Hating on his inclusion is just silly.
But the reason why Ms. Pac-Man became so popular was because people were craving more of the Pac-Man gameplay. The character didn't suddenly get supplanted in people's minds because Midway copied the sprite and added lipstick to it. Pac-Man cabinets are still staples of any arcade, you can find them standalone, constantly get re-released and keep getting ports on consoles and handhelds.
Pac-Man's no stranger to consoles in any case, since he's had his games ported time and time again. Even if the original titles like Pac-Man 2 and Pac-Man World might not have lit the world on fire they're still somewhat fondly remembered, even here on GAF where everything's awful.
Sounds like BS to me. Random probably just generates a number between one and forty-seven (or however many characters there are total) and gives you whichever character matches with that number. For the demo Random would probably only be generating from the total number of demo characters and even IF Ganondorf's number was generated the game would probably just crash.
Then Nintendo made a poor choice. It was obvious that a trailer for the most recognizable video game icon of all time would be well-received.Again, that's not what we're arguing. The question was whether, in the midst of all the pre-reveal Pac Man hate by the vocal minority, Nintendo might have considered a public reveal risky.
Those anti-arcade players, if they exist, would not have made a sizable portion of the crowd. The simple truth is that loud and whiny players who grew up on consoles were not fond of an arcade icon invading their Smash Bros. They are the same people who don't care if Mr. Game and Watch returned and would cut him on their fake leaks.
EVO is a good event to announce something like the option to turn off stage hazards.....

Why did Sakurai have to put in a pizza with a slice taken out as a character? Talk about a waste of a slot.
It also got booed because it was on the Xbox One, which, at the time, was one of the most unanimously hated consoles of all time. DRM, Kinect, Call of Duty, Sports, etc.KI was boobed at EVO last year because Sunday was running late (like every EVO) and they sandwiched the reveal in between Marvel and SF4. Just about the worst a lot placement you can do.

If McDonald's did something like this for Smash 4, could you bring yourself to get a kids meal?

Buy it? Yes. Eat it? No way.
I'd sooner eat the toy that comes with the kid's meal than the kid's meal.Buy it? Yes. Eat it? No way.
Just buy the toy by itself.
Problem solved.
You don't need to order a Happy Meal to buy the toys.
