It does, in the sense that two people lost their cool and said racially-charged insults.

It does not, however, in the sense that Michael Richards had never displayed any behavior of the sort (of which I'm personally aware), and it kinda came out of left field for his fans. Ant, on the other hand, said the same thing he's said for 20 years, and it caught nobody who knew his body of work by surprise.

Personally, I think M. Richards just had a breakdown and thought of the meanest shit he could think of.because he couldn't handle being heckled. Mr. Cumia's rant, on the other hand, is more indicative of deeper criticisms and prejudices he bears toward American black people. Michael Richards may very well be a super racist, but as far as I know this was an isolated public incident. With Ant, it wasn't an isolated incident at all.

I think for most of us, it's important to understand that we aren't saying we are surprised Ant got fired for saying racist stuff... basically, we are surprised it took this long if it was ever going to happen. There was a time when maybe they were untouchable as far as satellite radio personalities go... but those days are in the past, with the end of their show imminent anyway.

Apparently the show is up in October. Interested to see if they take the show elsewhere or if he just retires. I'd rather he just retire. But I don't think we'll be that lucky.

Anthony and his supporters are complete fucking idiots. Went through his twitter feed and neither he nor his fans have any idea why he was fired. The issue is flying over their underdeveloped heads.

yeah, but he's never been around the typical blacks:

They dont incite a riot because whitey has to sit there and take it. But if a white said anything similar, they would get beaten. Bill, Louie, and Jimmy only have to associate with famous more well-mannered blacks. Ant didn't have as much of an cushiony early adult-hood and had to be around the "typical" blacks in his daily life, he probably seen way more racist blacks therefor his opinion is a bit stronger. Bill is so damn liberal is hurts.

This is utter BS!

"Anthony of 'Opie and Anthony' Fame Fired For Twitter RantThe Atlantic Wire

Polly Mosendz 5 hours ago

Radio host Anthony Cumia has been fired from his show, "Opie and Anthony" on Sirius XM; the latest entertainment personality to be punished for his behavior on social media. Cumia hosts the show along with Gregg "Opie" Hughes and comedian Jim Norton. This year, Opie and Anthony celebrated twenty years of broadcasting together.

The firing comes after Cumia went on a Twitter rant, using profane language and making derogatory remarks about an African American woman who assaulted him in Times Square. Cumia was taking a photograph of the Square, and the woman believed she was the subject of his photographs.

via NY Daily News.

The unidentified woman allegedly hit Cumia more than five times while calling him a "white motherfucker." Cumia took a photo of the woman moments before she hit him, then posted it to Twitter with a profanity laced tweet.

At the time, neither Cumia nor the woman involved reached out to police officers. After the incident, Cumia sent a number of tweets, calling the woman a "cunt" and a "savage."

Sirius XM publicly offered details of the firing today, issuing this statement to their investors earlier this afternoon:

Opie and Anthony are known for a radio bit called "The Apology Clock," in which they try to go ten days without a celebrity or member of the media issuing a public apology. Opie and Anthony fans began deliberating and even placing bets on whether or not Cumia would apologize to keep his job, however, Cumia was let go almost immediately after the incident through an email. Cumia has clarified that he was not sorry, and would not be apologizing.

Much of Cumia's on-air personality involves racial commentary. He also frequently discusses the conservative movement in America, including his role as a gun owner in New York state, which has very strict gun regulations. Many Opie and Anthony fans were particularly fond of this commentary, and are now canceling their subscriptions to Sirius XM en masse.

Other members of the show, Jim Norton and Opie Hughes, have not yet spoken on the matter. The show's contract with Sirius XM expires in October. Considering Hughes' and Norton's demonstrated loyalty to Cumia in the past (they have gone through several firings and fines for their shocking commentary) they are likely to leave Sirius at the end of contract.

In the meantime, Cumia plans to continue his radio career through a show he personally runs,"Live from the Compound." Sirius XM has declined to comment on the matter. Cumia did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

It does not matter that he's a public figure, though I do agree with you that him being a public figure representing a show that's carried by them in turn makes SiriusXM's image worse than if a janitor did the same things. But anyone doing anything can get fired for things that they do in public.

Of course you get fired for saying things like that for 1million+ viewers to see, and your boss finding out.

what is slanted about the article?

--There's no actual evidence whatsoever that he was actually attacked other than his own word in the middle of a crazed rant.

--By his own admission she attacked him after he started calling her derogatory names.

--I just had to LOL at the article describing what Anthony does on the show as "racial commentary." If the sample of what has been posted in this thread is any indication, his "commentary" on race issues was not much better than this twitter rant that got him fired. Sucks for those Sirius subscribers that are actually canceling their subscriptions "en masse" tho...

Probably this part:

"RELATED: Doritos New Flavor Is a Game of Russian Roulette in Your Mouth"

I mean, if it was Kettle Chips or Newman's Own Honey Mustard pretzels, or those crunchy blue corn Kale sails or whatever other liberal-ass snack food, they wouldn't be comparing it to something as messed up as Russian Roulette. They'd say something like "An enticing opportunity with every bag" or something.

I don't get what's happening to this country. I really don't.

o&a fans are the juggalos of the radio world.

Once upon a time, the show was great and there wasn't a better showcase for great comics. You had regulars like Louis CK, Patrice O'Neal, Bill Burr, Dave Attell, Jim Jefferies, Colin Quinn, Joe Rogan, Doug Stanhope, Amy Schumer, Keith Robinson, Bobby Kelly, Joe Derosa, Greg Giraldo, Rich Vos, Bonnie McFarlane, Mike Birbiglia, Nick DiPaolo, Patton Oswalt, Jim Florentine, Marc Maron, etc. Additionally, you have Jim Norton on third mic and Anthony himself used to be as funny as anyone they ever had on the show. Unfortunately, it's been going downhill for a couple of years and Anthony went from someone who occasionally had some edgy jokes with a racial component to a frothing at the mouth racist.

Yeah, had a lot of that crossover between Tough Crowd and Red Eye in terms of the regular comedians. Jim Norton being constant as the northern star. Which is why I think Anthony started showing up on the latter and eventually regular Fox News shows where he's slowly degraded.

Everybody now just gets their own podcast or show it seems like.

...Birbiglia?

Birbiglia is legitimately fucking hilarious.

You actually watched "My Girlfriend's Boyfriend?" Damn good storytelling/stand-up.

Yeah, he's more known for hanging out with Ira Glass than Jim Norton, but he's still a very funny man.

guy reminds me of Michael Savage. Is that dude still around spewing his hateful shit? That guy doesnt even try to hide his contempt for minorities, women, and gays, he absolutely revels in saying just about everything short of "niggers, spics, dykes and faggots", but goddamn can you ever tell he wants to just flat out scream those words into his mic.

I don't think he was a great fit for the show since he was never "quick" like the other regulars and had a tendency to just do bits of his material, rather than just hanging out and chatting. I also think he works a lot better doing one man shows as opposed to a standard stand-up set, but my point is that he's a pretty big comedian who at one point was a regular on the show.

I think Birbiglia is a funny standup, but he's god awful on the radio. No ability to come up with shit on the spot so he just rehearses stuff from his act and attacks other comics in the studio. Except that ended pretty quickly when he made the mistake of attacking Nick Dipaolo.

1. That is why they used the word "allegedly"

2. Okay, and?

3. So you're third point is that you are mad that the article didn't present the story in a fashion that is actually slanted towards your perspective.

It is good to know that articles that simply lay out a story without editorializing are now known as "slanted"

Fair enough. I just felt like pointing that out because he was so horrible as a guest.

Don't care that it's not slanted toward my perspective. I just think it's funny how the article presents Anthony as some dude just walking down the street when this woman started slugging him.

If Birbiglia is weak on O&A, that's a problem w/ O&A. Birbiglia is just fine at coming off the top of his head and rolling with whatever's tossed in his lap on stuff like Comedy Bang-Bang.

Well, I don't know what "Comedy Bang-Bang" is, but feel free to look up Birbiglia's appearances and judge for yourself. It's about 80% him reciting bits from his act while others listen awkwardly and 20% Rich Vos bashing.

He does do a damn funny Bill Burr impression, though.

Savage took over Sean Hannity's slot.

He's actually a great listen in the car or whatever. Because he can swing from unhinged ranting about immigrants and he actually does yell into the mic to rueful reminiscing over dinners he ate in the pacific islands and other things from his academic background ("Weiner then earned two master's degrees in ethnobotany and anthropology from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He obtained a Ph.D. in 1978 from the University of California, Berkeley, in nutritional ethnomedicine. His thesis was titled Nutritional Ethnomedicine in Fiji.")

Well, I don't know what "Comedy Bang-Bang" is,

You should give it a shot, then. Especially if you appreciate things like "comedy" and "laughing" :)

but feel free to look up Birbiglia's appearances and judge for yourself.

See, this is what I'm saying though - I know Birbiglia's funny on other radio shows/podcasts, and I know he's funny in his own stand-up/one-man shows. So if he's not funny on Opie & Anthony, then that's an Opie & Anthony problem. They're somehow inable to facilitate his style of comedy, which is essentially the main reason they stayed successful beyond their stupid radio-stunt gimmickry: They were facilitators for talented comedians to shine in an off-the-cuff setting.

Actually, this is why I'm saying you should look up some of his appearances. He literally wouldn't do anything but his act and was given plenty of opportunities to talk. Opie especially is very good about trying to make comics comfortable and letting them get a line in or two (sometimes annoyingly so).

I think you're trying to defend him a bit too much. Tons of other comics kill on O&A.

Wow so as a life long Howard Stern fan I was ready to come in here and jump on the O&A hate train, but I think all of these firings over "public outrage" have gotten a bit absurd at this point.

If he had posted his racist tirade on Facebook instead of twitter, where a 1000th of the people would have seen it, would he still have gotten fired?

Edit: Do any of you listen to Howard Stern or his show on Sirius/XM? They can basically say whatever the hell they want and they say shockingly offensive things every day in the mind of prudish people. They're shock jocks, this isn't really a guy who had a good reputation before any of this.

Funny thing about his appearances on Comedy Bang Bang is that he plays a character that constantly mentions the Opie and Anthony show.
