Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

I wonder whats going on in the controversial opinion thread this week...

My friend says Witcher 3 is a white mans game with medieval Yurop up it's ass and will fail to sell to the large non-white gaming population who cannot relate to the character/game. He went on to explain the brown haired protagonist meme allows ppl to relate better because the skin is often slightly darker too.

That's the controversial opinion of...your friend, then? Ok. No offense then, but your friend's kinda lame for that, lol. I'm a black twentysomething from the deep south and I'm super hyped to play TW3. And I discovered it b/c my friend, another black twentysomething but from the Mississippi Delta, told me about it.

I definitely agree with the notion that gaming needs more women, or characters of color in the lead role. What bothers the crap out of me is when people try to cherrypick games and shit on them b/c they don't reach their personal standard of diversity.

Did I start a fucking Anti-Sony campaign??
I'm not anti-Sony. It's the other way around because I want them to keep going until the end of the world, but SCE would have been a much better company, and gamers would have been even happier with Sony products, if a batch of new people with fresh ideas took over there. SCE became extremely stagnant and the indie love show they're putting on now is just PR, not an actual change in the company.

Despite being black, I honestly do not care about how women, men, gays, blacks, whites, Asians or any other type of group is portrayed in a video game. These things have never affected by enjoyment of a video game in any way, shape or form. I just want the game to be fun.

Indies are too obsessed with 8-16-whatever bit graphics right now and trying to ride nostalgia to success.

Day 1 DLC is just content the dev/publisher held back to make some extra cash on.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a game series becoming a yearly thing as long as enough people find it fun to play.

More dev time =/= better game.

I'll never understand this line of thought. I'm not sure how a game like CRAWL is in any way playing on nostalgia. You could make the exact same argument against 3D games.

Kratos has become one of my favorite gaming characters. I've been playing Ghost of Sparta (which is fantastic) from the GoW collection and rubbed my hands together when I ran into
King Midas
and arrived in
Atlantis
. Yeah, Kratos fucked up both of them without hesitation.
*stares at clock waiting for GoW4*

It sounds to me like your friend is an ignorant, uneducated, racist, who has a lot to learn about life.

I guess your "friend" media consumption is limited to a few movies and games. Speaking as a black man, if I let the race of the character get in the way, I would not be able to play games, read a lot of books or watch TV/movies.

Personally, the concept of relating to a character is pointless and IMO extremely idiotic. Because they are not you, their actions and choices are not truly yours due to gameplay mechanics and game limitations.

To conclude, your "friend" is an idiot and should not ever think or attempt to speak for a whole segment of the population. Neither him or I can know who will buy the game, but I do know what he said is dumb.

That's exactly me. I hate how the World, not just gaming, is seeking diversity for the sake of diversity.

Lol. Gimme a fuckin' break. The world is doing that to stop things from being Straight White Male forever and ever. It's a GOOD thing. It's only bad when people cry about it and write six billion "thinkpieces". I'd prefer more diversity rather than what we have, I just don't need all the handwringing and tumblr posts.

I've been playing A Link to the Past recently, and I gotta say, it's really not that great. Or at least, it hasn't aged very well.

The game doesn't have a lot of character. There are no interesting NPCs and very little quirky dialog, the dungeons are pretty bland looking with uninteresting puzzles (a whole bunch of which seem to be block pushing puzzles), the difficulty curve is all over the goddamn place, the most jarring being the first time you enter the Dark World with enemies that do 3 hearts of damage when before that enemies did one heart at most, the story is generic "find the MacGuffins to unlock the final dungeon to beat the game" stuff (which I guess is kind of unfair due to being only the third Zelda, but considering Link's Awakening had such a good story I'm no so sure), and I don't really like how Link controls. Overall, I just find the game boring.

Ironically, A Link Between Worlds is my second favorite Zelda game.

I have a friend, he is trying to become a doctor and has taken the test to get into med school. He is in a certain area in test results, let's call it second tier, and he has been trying for a couple years but he has been passed over because he's White and the schools are looking into minorities more for second tiers.

How is this not racism and "better" than everyone just getting an opportunity? He's one of the better "second tier" applicants but is constantly passed over. Hence, he's done better than some of the people that were chosen over him but they got in because they're not White. This is better?

If people were equally qualified and they chose Whites over others then that's a problem, but if better qualified/people with better results aren't advancing because of their skin color then what is that?

Edit: To tie it in to gaming, it limits what they creators may want to do as they could need to have a strong, female representation or a minority main character simply because people cry "diversity".

Oh, there are many factors at play like him not getting good enough results to be in first tier but if everyone is in a group and minorities are being chosen strictly because they're minorities then how is that "better"? Diversity to be diverse is just another form of racism to me.

This is derailing the thread, is there a thread in general that we can further discuss this for anyone that wants to keep this going?

Just abolishing Jim Crow laws doesn't instantly put everyone on equal footing. There has to be this kind of uncomfortable preference left in the wake of the terrible choices we made in generations past.

Now, for how long and to what degree are questions worthy of debate. But to pretend they aren't needed misses the reason the preference is there in the first place.

Vanquish is completely overrated and I'd rather play Gears over Vanquish any day of the week. As cool as the boost mechanic is, level design, encounter design, and enemy AI is shlocky and uninteresting. Certain enemies are pretty neat and insta kill moves are fine and all, but the game is pretty "okay" most of the time and not this dumb holy grail of shooters that GAF continually seems to describe it as (that belongs to Halo).

I prefer my shooters without silly action game style combat mechanics.

Not sure if this is controverisal *maybe it is considering that there are alot of people who probably grew up on Pokemon*

I will just say this: Once you play X and Y, you can't go back to Red and Blue. You could however go back to Firered and imagine that was what Red and Blue were.

let's just say that..Red and Blue weren't nearly as good as i remember being. :(

This is just truth about how SCE works, but I guess it might be seen as "controversial" now that Nintendo became a zombie because of Wii U, M$ became a laughing stock because of Xbone and Sony stands as the last survivor, thus gaining a lot of warm feelings.

SCE is a fucking mess corporate-wise with office workers that have no idea what gaming is actually about. They keep blocking many people or making their work longer than it should be because of archaic, and often just stupid, procedures and a bad eye for head-hunting. SCE tries to get around that with the whole indie love propaganda, but indie games get old quickly and they will never lead a company as big as SCE to a success. What happens internally with AAA and with retro games via PS Store and PS Now is just terrible.

This doesn't really sound like some opinion that anyone can just throw out at Sony without being an insider. Are you in a position to know that what you said really happens at Sony?

To me Uncharted 3 is far better than 2. I don't know if this is "controversy", but it may be the minority's opinion.

Why so many people say that 2 is the best? I didn't like it that much

The ones that keep saying Xbox One will defeat PS4 keep forgetting that the US isnt the only country on the planet.

The 360 sold 80+ million. 40+ million of that is from ONE country. That tells you all you need to know.

MS had a year head start, and Sony's arrogant pricing practically handed the US to the 360 on a silver platter. But worldwide numbers tell the real story. The PS3 continues to outsell 360 in ever other country except the US.

The actual numbers don't match the wishful thinking of some people.

There's no controversy in your post; this is how it is.

If anything, it's probably better that TakeShad's not an "insider", since we can easily dismiss his post as tinfoil hat speculation without accepting it at face value. See Mortimer.

Didn't take until X/Y for that. I think everything got more or less future proofed with gen 3 though.

We're still getting awesome indie games, who gives a shit?

Playstation won the PS2 Vs. Original Xbox Era, Got their ass Kicked in the PS3 Vs. 360 Era

AND, Playstation 4 WILL get their ass beat in this Ps4 Vs. XboxOne era. They are out front now, but, Microsofts extreme willingness to spend money for Exclusive's coupled with the XboxOne's Ability to adapt & grow over the next 10 Plus years will spell DOOM for Ps4.

Playstation Now, will be trumped when Ubisoft Play & EA Origin sign exclusive deals with Xbox, as well as launching streaming Capability.

By 2020 there will NO LONGER be a Playstation Console in production.

There, I said it........

Stop doing drugs, they bad for you.

The rising negative sentiment about "retro" game presentation could easily be turned on its head: modern games fall back on expensive production values to hide weak, generic design and sell $60 worth of graphics in place of a solid game.

Maybe a controversial opinion might be: the statistics suggest disinterest has set in around contemporary games, where two thirds of purchasers never finish the game. One theory is that people only play a game until the novelty of fresh graphics wear off, then realize they don't really enjoy the game that much. Thus there is really not that much to praise so-called state of the art AAA-tier gaming over so-called retro game design; it's not really leading a medium to the future, just taking advantage of people's vulnerability to marketing and social hype to slap down a lot of money on day 1 to not be left out on what one's friends are doing. (The latter phenomenon is so powerful it was frequently remarked upon in the early days of Xbox Live, when "everyone on my friends list is playing XX" became a common motivator for gamers.)

Mass Effect 2 is awful and Mass Effect 3 was solid (but, of course, Mass Effect 1 is god-tier).

I personally enjoyed ME2 the most out of all three. The emphasis on the crew members and... one word: ARCHANGEL!

Besides, Omega is my favorite place in the entire ME universe.

The Halo series might be the most mediocre fps ever

Never understood the hype
I strongly remember playing Halo: CE when the PC port first came out and thinking "This is what everyone was buying an Xbox for?". Then I went back to Counter-Strike.

My favorite Bungie games are still Myth 1 and 2.

Had no idea what was going on in this thread. Now that I've read it a bit, seems fun. A place to vent unpopular positions.

So my rant: hd remake begging. It's worse than port begging. It should be bannable. Don't get me wrong, it's cool that some devs think it's worth their time. But i see the lamest requests from gamers.

No more, I tell you!

The PC ports should not be taken as a reference for the Halo series. Halo is a console game and had the best controls for pads out of all fps to its time. Actually, it was Halo which made fps even salonable on consoles. To me, the vehicle controls remain the best up to this day. So intuitive and easy to control. If you played the Destiny Alpha, you'll know what I mean.

CS and Halo is a textbook example for games, that souldn't be compared as of their heavily platform-based gameplay-design. CS was made for keyboards and mouse, Halo for controllers.
Playing Halo on PC with mouse and keyboard, or CS on console with a controller... both are terrible experiences.

I played Halo from beginning to end on the Xbox after the PC port and didn't find it to be any better. It's still the same game.

2 weapons, regenerating health, lame main character, bullet-sponge enemies etc. Ports don't change those fundamental problems.

Let it begin.
The game doesn't have just 2 weapons.

Where do you see a problem with regenerating health?

It did nothing great, even for its time.

I dunno why people loooooove MAster Chief so much. He is soo generic.

I mean carrying 2 weapons at a time. That's not even a "console concession", it's just a game design choice. You could carry plenty of weapons at the same time in Goldeneye and even dual-wield them.

I absolutely hated hiding behind rocks waiting for the shield to recover. I've begrudgingly grown accustomed to it over the years because Halo was a major inspiration for FPS developers and fans of the genre have had no choice, but at the time I thought it was a terrible idea.

Playing a game like Wolfenstein in 2014 that basically has no regenerating health (only in tiers of 20, which I think is a great way to do it) absolutely reinforces the idea to me that regenerating health was an awful "innovation" for FPS games.

Platinum games should be making everything posts/threads are the worst.

Well I wouldn't call it the worst personally but it definitely is one of the puzzling things for me as well

No way in Hell Platinum should be the go to choice for a game that requires a good story/story telling, characters, atmosphere or even open world gameplay..they have not proven themselves in any of these departments imho. Which is why I don't support the notion of them making an Attack On Titan game.

Fast beat em ups and over the top action based games are their cup of tea and there is nothing wrong with that. I do want them to revive GodHand.

I find most N64 games unplayable. I can't stand that awful, awful controller. Also, it looks like shit. I remember being a kid when it came out and thinking "My Zelda game looks better than that new Zelda game. I can't tell what's happening."

It did nothing great, even for its time.

I dunno why people loooooove MAster Chief so much. He is soo generic.

His name is even just a rank of the US Navy. It's like calling the main character of CoD "Sergeant Major" and just leaving it at that.

The most interesting thing about Master Chief is his backstory, before he was lame, generic, and always wore a stupid helmet.

The Last of Us has a very boring story and people confuse good story with good character interaction/development.

That, and the gameplay was subpar as well.
People only gush over it because it looks great and is very well-acted, which just goes to show that people want movies, not video games.

And count me in on the hating Halo bandwagon as well.

And I feel I should have a positive controversial opinion as well so:
I think Nier and Deadly Premonition are some of the smartest games of the last generation.
