Perhaps! Though MrWizard said there are multiple surprises at Evo, and Nintendo is a sponsor for the event. I have a shadowed hope that we'll get something.
If they reveal a newcomer, they still need to reveal one next month for the August Nintendo Direct. Then what, one unlockable newcomer not counting the third parties. Could they do a Sonic-esque reveal for Mewtwo, maybe, but I'm not even sure if he'll be in the base roster.

I'm sticking with the next & last pre-release newcomer reveal being next month.

Wasn't passing judgement, just reacting to some of the people disclaiming utter confusion about people's desire to have certain characters included.

My only issue is when people put their nostalgic preference(s) as the end all "perfect roster choice" and write off more modern characters as somehow bad choices.

I guess I wan't being very nice before, but I was hoping my use of spoilered emotes gave away that I wasn't totally serious.

I just want a samurai and StarTropics love man!

After watching half this Kings of Cali tournie I'm really seeing that you need to have Battlefield versions of every stage as well as FD because the platforms are so integral
Little Mac is probably also going to wind up proving you need more than just FD-variations of each stage for a fair 'competitive' mode.

No worries man, just trying to add some clarification. I agree that nostalgia can be a dangerous thing

Absolutely, dude. I really hope he adds Battlefield to the "For Glory" mode. Otherwise, we're going to be seeing a lot of Little Macs online.

Don't worry, I wasn't particularly referencing you.

I've just noticed that a lot of the people who are loud/obnoxious about roster choices
tend to want characters entirely based on the concept of seniority, and think that
somehow makes them more valid than any modern character.

Then again, I might just be thinking of waluigi & daisy fans.

Reminds me of that one video.

♫ Hi, I'm Daisy and it drives me crazy... ♫

It's really a shame so many people actually believe that "Final Destination only" crap. 10 minutes of watching competitive would show you that players use multiple stages. I've seen Pokemon Stadium more in tournaments I've watched than FD.

Remember Lyn fans on the Nintendo Smash forums before Brawl came out?

Those were the worst.

?

I seem to remember the Lyn fan base being one of the nicest and non abrasive groups during the pre-Brawl era.The Geno fan base was all kinds of nutty though (even though there were a few cool folks there too).

Geno fans were nuts.

Wolf and Krystal fans wouldn't stop bitching at each other. They were probably the actual worst.

Shit, I actually forgot the intra-StarFox fandom bickering. Third spot syndrome is a very real thing. :lol

It's actually kind of funny how the only time I truly expect a Final Destination match in competitive play is if someone's playing M2K and body bagged him first round with a space animal.

The amount of Yoshi's and Dreamland played however would make me believe that the competitive Smashverse loves some motherfucking Yoshi's Island/Kirby Super Star though.

The worst fans pre Brawl were probably Geno or Krystal. Ones going all out for characters like Lyn, Starfy, and Vaati you just kinda felt bad for and ignored.

Starfy fans were cool. Honestly, most fans going for unrepresented franchises were cool.

I just lurked back then.

EDIT: I forgot the best part of pre-Brawl speculation, the clouds!

I was always a big Geno supporter, but it was more of a "Huh? Other people like this character?" than actually thinking he'd make it in. It was just such a random surge of support for the character and, though I maybe got caught up in it a little, I never really expected him to be playable. It was just cool to see all these people talking about one of my favorite games of all time.

But, like many support groups, they got really annoying, really fast. Entitled fanboys/girls are the worst.

I dunno, I thought niche but still "notable" fans are more annoying *cough Golden Sun, Advance Wars, etc*

I don't hear much about Advance Wars apart from Sami replacing Snake which could be more from a party who just doesn't want to lose Snake's moves and is willing to take anything,

I feel it would be nice if AW got a rep before another FE rep to represent Nintendo's other main strategy title.

Personally, I really don't mind much who Sakurai puts on Smash. He can put the most obscure character out there and I'll still love that character. Of course I also have my own wishlist (Rockman actually happened!!!) but if they don't make it in I'm still happy overall because I have yet to see a Smash character in the series that does not really fit. Guess that's Sakurai magic for ya.

The gap between SSB4 and Dark Dawn is actually shorter than the one between The Lost Age and Brawl.
Yeah, but people actually liked The Lost Age, right? Like I've never played any of the games, but I thought the general opinion was that the newest Golden Sun game just sort of immediately went into obscurity because nobody really liked it.

The thing most people in the AW need to accept now before their hearts are broken is that Andy is the most likely rep...or a tiny Army dude. Sami is waaay down the list sadly.

Hmm so:

Mii Gunner = Megaman + Samus
Mii Fighter = Little Mac + ???
Mii Swordfighter = Marth + Link

Sounds good to me. I still think my Mii will be a Swordfighter most of the time.

And, also, I think Pit is a big reason people get there hopes up. Aside from Game and Watch, Pit must be the biggest gap between latest retail release and Smash appearance. Not condoning the "I deserve this!" attitude, but I can see how they would get their hopes up.

The most annoying people in roster discussions are always the people who get made that X character got in because they think that choice somehow prevented Y character from making it. All the crazy talk about "slots" and who "deserves it more" is so annoying, and it's usually when all the different groups you guys are talking about come out in force all at once.

Ice Climbers were pretty close. Game came out in 1985, Melee came out sixteen years later in 2001.

Yeah, I've always seen Andy as a more likely candidate or maybe even the main character from Dark Conflict.
Or maybe even an actual soldier since you do play as them directly in Battalion Wars.

For me, i was told in the melee era by a friend who followed the scene that fd was the best stage so during that time we mainly played fd. once brawl came out it kinda stuck :T

Samus was the "least relevant" character in the original Smash Brothers. Zero games for the past six years and none to come for another three.

Roy has the dubious honor of being the only Smash character to appear before his game was even released.

Wait, doesn't Ness still beat her out?

Wait, doesn't Ness still beat her out?

If you're going strictly by who had the most recently released game, then Samus is "less relevant" than Ness. But Ness was also only in one game versus Samus's three, and that Earthbound sold a fair bit less than Super Metroid, so yeah, I'd say Ness was far less relevant. Plus, Earthbound didn't really develop its fervent fanbase until years later.

Mother 2 (August 27, 1994) was released 5 months after Super Metroid (March 19), and they were actually showing footage for Mother 3/Earthbound 64 during the N64 era while Metroid was nowhere to be found.

True, but Earthbound 64 wasn't going to feature Ness, so that doesn't really make him any more relevant. :P
