Still makes Mother (and, by association, Ness) more relevant than Metroid/Samus.

Only in certain and somewhat arbitrary ways. I'd still say Samus was far more relevant all around though. She was the star of three games that all sold better than Ness's one. Earthbound was technically more recently released than Super Metroid, but not by so much that the you could argue the character or game were more well known than Samus/Metroid given the divide in sales and the much longer lifespan of the character. Having a game stuck in development hell that doesn't even feature the character doesn't change all that much.

Wait, doesn't Ness still beat her out?
Nope! Earthbound was released a bit after Super Metroid.

If you're going strictly by who had the most recently released game, then Samus is "less relevant" than Ness. But Ness was also only in one game versus Samus's three, and that Earthbound sold a fair bit less than Super Metroid, so yeah, I'd say Ness was far less relevant. Plus, Earthbound didn't really develop its fervent fanbase until years later.
Nobody knew about Prime or Fusion back then though.

Not in Japan. Metroid has always been a niche title over there, while the Mother franchise was pretty successful.

The divide between Super Metroid and Earthbound wasn't that big in Japan though. Like .7m vs .8m. And the original Metroid sold quite a bit more. And outside of Japan there's no contest.

I'm not really sure how this is an argument. Much more sales and three times as many appearances isn't really topped by a game trapped in development hell that doesn't even feature the character and like a 5 month difference in releases.

Besides, which of the two was 1) one of the original four from the prototype build 2) was featured prominently on the packaging, all promotional material, and the opening sequence and 3) was part of the core roster? Because it's not Ness.

Methinks Sakurai agrees.

Starfy fans were cool. Honestly, most fans going for unrepresented franchises were cool.

I just lurked back then.

EDIT: I forgot the best part of pre-Brawl speculation, the clouds!

I know it's funny as hell, but didn't those 4 things end up being the main villains of that mode?

Okay.

Where did you get the Super Metroid sales figures for Japan?

The thing most people in the AW need to accept now before their hearts are broken is that Andy is the most likely rep...or a tiny Army dude. Sami is waaay down the list sadly.

Actually, Sami is probably in the top 5 most likely Advance Wars reps, along with Andy and Max, or Will and Brenner.

And like I said, the Mother series had no presence in Europe therefore Metroid was technically more universally relevant.
As annoying as it is people often ignore Europe in these discussions unless it's about Europe getting something that America didn't.

I still don't get this.
The clouds obviously reference some of the villains of the mode, what's wrong with it?
The only funny part is that people thought Ridley was going to be playable because of this, but the clouds clearly are showing those characters.

Captain Toad seems to be ignored by most of Mario's own spin offs... Has he even appeared in any? Maybe getting his own game will change that though.

Still don't get all the love for K. Rool and wanting him to be in Smash. I'm not actively hoping he doesn't get in - I'm always happy when fans of a character get what they want - but damn, I just don't see how he's interesting beyond nostalgia. I'd rather have Wart, personally, but then again I guess he's interesting for the same reason.

Oh well, different strokes!
I don't like it when people shoot down character suggestions, but I find it hilarious you would dismiss K. Rool so to speak, and suggest a minor character like Wart in the same breath.

He needs to make another mainline appearance or at the very least Mario Kart first. Baby steps. :P

afaik he's like the Yoshi's. So any Toad may decide to leave Peaches Castle to be an adventurer/captain.

Captain Toad is a specific npc character from Galaxy 1 and 2 though. His playable appearance in 3d World wasn't his first one.

The generic "Toad" in the games themselves seems to be a generic representation of the Toads, rather than a specific character though, while Yoshi sometimes is just a generic and other times seems to specifically reference a certain Yoshi that already knew Mario from before.

Hi guys I'm back! Was really busy last week so I couldn't post much. Super excited about alt costumes. The rest of the posts last week were OK, too. Hopefully we'll get Wario or Ice Climbers this month. :)

Interesting that gunner's side smash is that! I was totally sure that'd be a side special.

Pic of the day. The Mii Gunner's side smash attack may have the farthest reach of all the side smashes…as should be expected from a firearms expert!! Looks like the attack missed this time, though.

Absurd range for a side smash.

Mii top tier confirmed

It's barely been 6 months since 3D world launched...

Any spinoffs that have come out since were in primary development before 3D World came out.

we share a birthday friend lol, happy birthday, and prepare for fucking nothing!

Time for an action shot of Luigi stretching his nose.

And happy birthday to both of ya!

How did we know this would happen lol.

Oh well happy birthday to you as well brospeh and thanks for the wishes peeps!

I wanna say Yoshi in Smash is the same one from World, Kart, etc. Peach's personal shield Toad I'm sure is meant to be generic.

I have no evidence to back this claim up, though.
