Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 announced, up for preorder (based on Crystal Cove)

I got a Logitech G27 today for Assetta Corsa, and as someone who enjoys arcade and middle ground racers like PGR and Forza Horizon (but not sims previously) holy hell am I glad I bought it. Driving the Lotus 49 around an empty track is terrifying and awesome.

More than any other game I keep forgetting that the arms on the wheel that I see aren't mine. Then I go to point at something or pick something up and I get weirded out for a brief moment. A friend of mine actually reached up to try to adjust the mirror. Seriously.

The force feedback is something else I didn't even think about. It really adds to the immersion because you don't just look like you are there, you feel like you are too. Force feedback, plus 1:1 correlation between in game wheel and wheel in your hands, plus VR, plus headphones, plus a control method that's natural and second nature to anyone who can drive a car... all add up to probably the best rift experience I've had yet...

and I've had some real doozies.

I got a slight cramp in my lower back from bracing myself for one too many crashes.

That Lotus is terrifying... and amazing. Again, I enjoy more casual racing games. I maybe buy one or two a year. I'm not a serious racing enthusiast... but the wheel took a great VR experience and mind it mind blowing. I can't wait for them to patch in DK2 support and to get my DK2! When you feel like your life is on the line should you lose control of the car, racing sims are fricking awesome.
I can only imagine how much some butt kickers would put that over the top.
Or if they would rattle the headset too much. Must find some impressions for science.

Just finished up making a goober-ass Rift map in UE4 as the first thing I'll run around in. I can't stand this wait.

For the new DK, will a 7950 plus a i4670k be enough for most demos? I'd love to try it, but I think my next system won't be enough.

Should be plenty of power, most demos are made with performance in mind. AAA games that have been adapted for VR are going to be what causes any problems.

Did you see that (comparitively) super slow F Zero clone they've got going for this? I might actually support it if they promise a breakneck speed with difficult AI to match.

I've played that demo. It's not really an F Zero clone at all. You just pivot around a cylinder and forwards always makes you go along it. You don't 'turn' as it were. It's fun but it's pretty shallow.

I'd love an actual F-Zero clone.

Butt kickers shouldn't mess things up with the DK2. If they shake you, you'll still see that shake translate into head movement in the same way your brain expects... so it should be fine.

Assetta Corsa doesn't seem to be too demanding system wise. I'm pretty sure anyone will be able to run it.

No reports anywhere of people getting charged? Supposed to start arriving Monday.
Just to help keep expectations in check, cybereality said:
"The very first units" (which could mean anything between 2 and 5.000)
"are expected to reach developers the week of July the 14th" (this means any day between the 14th and the 20th)

Love those impressions!

Love those impressions!

Honestly, I can't wait to give it another spin tonight. I played for hours, something I know not everyone can do with the DK1, but that I've been able to do since about a month after I got mine.

That friend got pretty simulator sick after a few laps, so I'm interested to see if the DK2 truly fixes that.

And yeah, I'm expecting them to start *shipping* next week. Hopefully I'll have mine before long. I'm really eager to revisit Technolust.

We have some movement possibly. I just received a mail from Oculus asking about possible 'duplicate' orders asking me to confirm if I want all of them (I ordered six units for our dev team).

when did you order?

and have you just posted this on the oculus dev forums?

Also worth noting that my order sais "Your order is awaiting inventory before it can be fulfilled. We will notify you when it's about to be shipped." which I believe is new?

Nope mints said that for forever.

Also all multi rift orders are getting emailed to stop potential resells.

Cross posting this from the Elite Dangerous and PC Racing Sim threads because it applies here too:

I'm such a consumer whore. I said I was going to wait a while on a buttkicker, but here I am, having just ordered the parts to a kit. Soi-Fong asked me to let him know what buttkicker I eventually went with after doing some research, so I'll just post it for the entire thread instead.

Primer for those unfamiliar with buttkickers: a buttkicker is a brand of transducers built to strap to chairs. These are essentially the magnets from very powerful subwoofers. Instead of vibrating the air to make bass, these things, when strapped to your chair, rumbles your body. This does a couple of things - first, it gives the impression of enormous amounts of bass, one of these things is supposed to make it feel like you have an impressive sound system even if you're just wearing headphones (and side benefit: these things are silent outside of the chair, so others don't hear/feel the bass). Second, and more relevant to VR and games like Elite Dangerous - it'll essentially translate all the low frequency noises in the game (so, for example, stuff like the warp engines or the sound of your ship accelerating) into full body rumble within the chair you are sitting in. This is supposed to be amazing, especially in Elite Dangerous and Assetto Corsa.

So, after reading a bunch of reviews and opinions and articles, and shooting off some PMs to people, here's what I've found: Buttkicker Gamer2 appears to be sold out absolutely everywhere. These things are kind of like the transducer to buy, but they've been hard to find for over a year now. Supposedly a new batch is coming at the end of august. These things apparently go for about $300 when actually sold according to some guys on reddit, although looking on google I found some stores that list them at about $150 (although they haven't had them in stock for over a year apparently).

Beyond that, buttkicker isn't the only option. A poster on Reddit put together a list of parts for a kit he bought and assembled that apparently performs as well as these $300 buttkickers, only for less than $100. For those who can't be bothered to dig through the reddit thread, here's the parts list:

AuraSound AST-2B-4 Pro Bass Shaker Tactile Transducer by Aura Sound

Lepai LP-168HA 2.1 2 x 40-Watt Amplifier and 1x68W Sub Output by Lepai

12v 6a Adapter Power Supply for LCD Monitor with Power Cord by LCD AC Power Adapter

I saw some people vouching for this kit, and sent some PMs and got positive feedback, so I went ahead and ordered these parts. After shipping, the thing came out to less than $90. These parts should arrive on the 14th (!) so I'll post a quick guide on how I affix it to my chair and my impressions then.

I didn't get an email about my 2 orders, but when talking to support about the payment issue(need to update CC info), I was asked if my 2 orders on file were on purpose, or a mistake. I think they were asking because I actually forgot to change the quantity in my first order, so I just re-ordered directly afterwards. So I have 2 DK2's coming to me with 2 separate order numbers.

Oculus guys said it was fine, and they were just making sure I still wanted both.

What sucks is now I'll have to wait on 2 different emails in order to update my payment info. They are both (probably) first batch orders so I am really, really, really hoping to get an email before the week's end about updating my payment info.

I've had DK1 since they first started shipping them. I think I received mine in April of 2013, and STILL I feel like a little kid on Christmas Eve right now.

VR is so awesome.

Good luck to all of you! I hope we all get ours very soon.

Wonder if first batch people will start getting e-mails today or tomorrow, or not until early next week. If they were really going to start hitting doorsteps next week you'd think we'd have heard something by now.

I came here to say/ask this. I hope I'm in the first round.

Alright, I was GOING to wait until CV1, but screw it, just pre-ordered the DK2....I have a GTX 780, 16gb ram, and Xeon E3-1230V3 CPU, will I be able to have fun with the DK2, while waiting for the CV1?

Absolutely. You have a fantastic rig but remember that in VR, frame rate is king. Be sure to turn down graphics settings to hit as close to 75 fps as you can.

Really hoping this time next week I will be simply waiting for the UPS guy to arrive. So close!

I truly hope us early birds get emails tomorrow. I need to update my CC info, so I imagine emails will be tomorrow to give enough time for people to update their payment info before shipping next week.

Awesome! Thanks for the response...yeah I knew my rig wouldnt be able to say play Metro Last Light level stuff on ultra, with VR. Just want to kind of mess around and have fun, so not worried about turning settings down to achieve higher FPS.

This will be my first VR experience, so hoping to have my mind blown in some sort of way :)

I think you will be blown away if it's your first time. The Rift is really fantastic.

Some tips from a DK1 owner:
Be sure that you use a gamepad if you can (X360 or Xbox One controllers have the best compatibility). Reaching for your mouse/keyboard can be a bit difficult with the Rift on. If you have a wheel, you MUST play a racing game within your first week! It's amazing how immersive that is if you have the full setup.

Wear headphones if you can.

Don't have your first VR experience be a non-native Rift demo. It's tempting to try to load up Skyrim with the driver injection programs that exist, but while they are cool, they usually are not extremely playable and are not a good introduction to VR. However, once you've played a couple of Rift demo's, go ahead and load them up. I usually load them up just to marvel at their environments and less to play the game. Some of the locations in Skyrim are beautiful in VR, and having a dragon randomly come in and breathe fire at you is a bit terrifying. :)

https://share.oculusvr.com/ will be the best place to look for content. I believe games will need to use the latest SDK to be playable in DK2, so it's possible some of them will not work right away. I'm hoping Oculus updates their site with a DK2 ready filter and hopefully by the time you get your Rift (probably August/September depending on how fast they can ship them out) there will be a lot of content on the new SDK.

I recommend you try out at least one horror game. With the immersion that you feel in the Rift, they are generally absolutely fucking terrifying, which can be fun (though I'm a big baby and never finish them because I get so scared). Dreadhall is the one I loaded up a lot.

For your first demo, start with something slow, ideally where you don't have to move the character. I personally prefer starting with Titans of Space. It's a guided tour of our solar system, and it lets you really appreciate the sense of scale the Rift can give you. The reason I suggest this is that it takes a while for you to get your "VR legs", though the DK2 should minimize that with its positional tracking, low persistence and higher resolution. The biggest thing you'll notice in games where you control the character is how easy to do movements which can make you feel a bit ill.

Related to the above, but if you ever start feeling nauseous, take the Rift off and give it a break for a couple of minutes. Don't force yourself to keep playing. Again, the DK2 should minimize this, but it's still likely to happen.

If you're running Windows be sure to have the Rift set up as an extended monitor and not a cloned/duplicate display (duplicate display adds a small amount of latency). I'd suggest making the Rift your primary monitor as some games only go full screen on monitor 1. It is more difficult to use when in extended mode as the Rift can't display the desktop in VR, so it can be hard to launch demo's, go through launchers, etc, but once you're in game you're fine.

Hope you enjoy the Rift! :D

Are you 100% certain about the cloned vs. extended desktop? If so, roughly how much latency and for which Windows versions? I have the official latency tester and I'm curious, so I might try to do some testing myself.

As you mention, using extended instead of cloning makes it a HUGE pain with the Rift as the primary desktop since Windows 7 may tend not to cooperate with the task bar and where certain windows go. I consider myself latency-sensitive and I guess I didn't think I noticed much added latency.

Thanks for the great write up, I'll make sure to use your tips when I receive my DK2 :)

I still hope K&L will release a low settings/non PhysX build of Senza Peso. I wanted to jump into it as my first VR experience but performance is utter crap on my i5 4570/7870 rig once those particle effects set in (~30-40 FPS...). :(

Holy crap, thanks so much for this!!!

I definitely have a ton of controllers, so that wont be an issue...was also looking to pick up a razer hydra, but they seem to be no longer available? At any rate, I don't yet have a wheel..but based on your suggestion might pick one up...any suggestions?

Again, thanks so much for the detailed info...it is super helpful!!

I honestly don't have a wheel, and I typically used my roommates. However, the Logitech G27 looks like a great option that doesn't break the bank. That's what I will likely pick up soon.

I do have a hydra and it is really cool when it's set up. Outlands was my favorite demo for it. It's being replaced by the Stem I believe, so I would honestly just wait for that as that will probably be better moving forward. If you can find a hydra for a decent price on Craigslist or something though, then you could always grab one. It is a bit finnicky at times, but it was worth it to have 1:1 hand movement for the first time.

if emails don't go out today then I bet that NOONE gets sent their DK2 before august.
I think it's more about what they actually meant by "The very first units are expected to reach developers the week of July 14th" was that it would ( probably ) be shipped during that week, so if you were neighbor with a distribution center, with some luck maybe you would get it that week.

got friends here fucking with me and entering my email address on the oculusvr order information form, triggering an order info email and getting me very excited

Ahahaha, I did a very similar thing to a bud who set up some kind of alarm once an email with "Oculus" "shipped" etc. in it arrives at his inbox :D

Luckily I don't have any VR experience so the wait for me is not that hard at all. Seems like those who have used a Rift before are the most impatient for DK2 :p

Haha, that's actually pretty hilarious!

I'd be like this every time

It could also be that the very special early partner developers (such as whoever did the unboxing picture) get theirs, but none of the preordering people.

Not sure if it's already been mentioned here or not, but saw this post/quote on the Oculus subreddit in regards to the need for vsync being on with DK2, this quote comes from cyber:

Well, with DK1 it was somewhat acceptable to run without V-Sync. You would get tearing, but it could be minor or not noticeable.

However, on DK2 because the screen is rotated, the tear is vertical. This means that it's possible for the eyes to go out of sync and this is a major issue. So you really need V-Sync on for DK2.

That said, time-warp should be able to relieve many of these issues.

https://developer.oculusvr.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=10324&p=134054#p134054

I feel like I don't know enough about the time warp thing, can someone here explain it to a laymen? Does it reduce latency and/or tearing? I thought it was just for latency but the post from cyber made me wonder if it is related to a vsync like solution as well.

If you want to know about Timewarp here is a good video about it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvtEXMlQQtI

edit: meh someone posted the youtube video before me :(
