lol man the mods are still as terrible on GB... Any comments that are not explecitly positive in a Patrick story are deleted... And I'm not talking about overly negative or insulting stuff either. Simple comments questioning politely why he's doing something in particular.

Whenever I politely correct Patrick on his typos in his articles, my comment gets deleted.

There seems to be mixed messages. They want to clamp down, but I don't think there are clear guidelines for it yet. I saw Rorie write something like "I probably wouldn't have moderated that post" a few days back, so trying to create that united front will take time.

You should probably contact Rorie if there's something you're not happy with about the moderation policy. Doesn't help much to just rant about it here.

I sent a tweet to Patrick but whatever, it's not worth the effort, I'll just continue to avoid the comments/forum on the site.

Yeah, they should have normal news articles go through another editor to check the grammar etc. like they do with reviews. There's still some pretty huge typos in that Xbone article. But still, I imagine they want people to PM Patrick rather than write it as a permanent comment under the article (but I agree that it seems a bit much to delete them).

Rorie said that they were working on new guidelines and would have them ready this week, I believe. So they're working on something at least.

That's what I've been doing every since they went back to CBS. Around that time was when I noticed a shift in the community. It was as if there had been an influx of assholes from GameSpot or GameTrailers from the exposure, and the community just wasn't the same after. The forums became a toxic place full of snark, sarcasm and ugliness, and the mods weren't as diligent as they should have been. So I stopped going there.

The Giant Bomb thread on Neogaf is all that I need to discuss everything GB.

As someone who's still fairly into anime (even if I don't watch much at all these days), I've always found presenting anime as something where there's a ton of amazing shows once you get past the more visible crap to be a little disingenuous, to be honest.

I guess the way I see it is: I'm someone who's fine with moe (as long as the characters still act like normal characters) and tends to enjoy some cheesy/overdramatic writing (as long as it's of the romantic or non-angsty superhero variety). So I'm fine with those, but I can't stand "fanservice". And it (and the generally gross treatment of female characters that come with it) is fairly pervasive these days, just as those other things I mentioned and other cliches are. These things aren't all equally bad (or even objectively bad at all), but they are all things that can keep people from enjoying a show they would have otherwise. There are absolutely a decent amount of great shows that don't include these things, or manage to overcome their use. But there are many more shows that are otherwise good but might suffer from including some, and that's where recommending things to people that aren't used to them becomes hard. There's of course also the shows that are just, well, bad, and that isn't something dependent on their audience or genre.

It's definitely ignorant to write all anime off as being one thing or the other, especially as it ignores that there are lot of different target demographics in play here. But there are also definitely are a lot of shows that, while they don't match the stereotypical view of anime, are close enough in one aspect or another that it seems like they do. It's not necessarily any different from any other medium in terms of overall quality, it's just that there's trends that might alienate some audiences more than the trends in other mediums do. It's ok for someone to not enjoy those trends, especially as we're not the target audience particularly in terms of paying for these things and therefore deciding what works, if not the culture as well.

...it helps that now I just watch a lot of tokusatsu to get my action/superhero fix and then only watch the occasional anime that jumps out at me or I've heard is worth it from people I trust.

tl;dr: Watch or read Monster.

And I'm mad I missed this Bot Colony stream; definitely watching that as soon as the archive goes up.

Yup my feelings exactly. I've had a tab opened with this thread in Chrome for the last 3 years at least. It's always my first pinned tab on the left set with the NeoGaf live thread addon.

Nodame Cantible is great. I'm amazed we got 3 seasons, it felt like the kind of show that would get shot in the face.

Yes! I watched it just as they announced the third season, then immediately got four other people to watch it and they all adored it. Weird thing is that it's still pretty popular. They're turning it into a Korean drama that's debuting in October.

There's this trifecta that I watched all around the same time where they all really took me by surprise. It was Nodame Cantabile, Kaleido Star and Princess Tutu.
Princess Tutu is extremely fantastic for what it's based on. Everything about that show shouldn't work but it really does.

Still waiting for one of the crew to be sucked into Jojo's, it really does seem like something that would be right up their alley.

Is it really that bad? The threads I've looked at don't seem anything like that.

The biggest thing killing my desire to look at their forums is the layout and organization. It's a mess of forums and subforums, and sometimes it feels like the only new topics are the ones made by spambots.

There was definitely a shift in the community vibe at some point, and I would pinpoint it earlier than when GB went to CBS. I was (and still am) one of the top posters on their forums, but I've also stopped posting as much as I used to as it just doesn't feel as nice as it was before.

Still a cool place with some interesting threads from time to time, though.

Watching the One Piece QL while the Dota Newbie stream is in recess.

I don't remember this raccoon fella, guess he was introduced in one of the 10000 episodes that aired since the last time I watched.

I hope that one day Jeff or Vinny gets legitimately into JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, if only because Part 4 of JJBA is literally Persona 4, but you know, a little strange.

Isn't there a Japanese Nodame Cantabile drama as well? I've always meant to watch both, but never got around to either.

As much as I love JoJo, I'm not sure if anyone in the crew would be a fan. It has a lot that they'd like in it, but it might not be constant enough to be worth it, especially as the first few parts can be a little boring at times. Honestly, they should just play ASB more and get into it that way.

At the time it was. I was browsing the GB forums daily, so I was well-placed to be exposed to everything the community had to offer.

In fact, FluxWaveZ just reminded me: that shift I was talking about happened earlier, as he said. CBS bought Giant Bomb in early 2012, but I emigrated from GB to Neogaf towards the end of 2010, in my first semester of university. So 2010 was the year when things went south. So for a good two years, the Giant Bomb community was awesome. And then it wasn't.

Anyways

I sincerely hope that Dan will be the one to bring back Endurance Runs. Back at Game Informer, he was the Replay guy along with Tim Turi. The two appeared in almost every Super Replay, and they were super fun to listen to. Great commentators. A Dan and Jeff or Dan and Brad ER could be a thing to behold.

Bot Colony refuses to go away quietly...

I'm so excited. I can't wait for the archive.

Yep. Three seasons of the anime, one season of the drama plus a special and two theatrical follow up movies, and now a Korean drama. The Nodame is strong.

As someone who is nearing the end of the first season I can see what you mean, but there's enough ridiculous in there to keep them going. Dio alone keeps the fist part going. A man who is so fucking evil
that he comes back as a severed head in a jar to kill Jojo.
How can you not love that?!

that Patrick piracy story was sweet. normally I think "hey look these tweets!" is a pretty worthless story, but this one was alright.
I wouldn't have clicked on it without your posts, thanks.
They need to figure out a better highlighting system for editorial content.

Vinny played it during Unprofessional Friday some time ago.

You don't want to see the gameplay.

It's actually not that bad. Sort of like a neat puzzler.

It'll also teach you some rudimentary things about cars if you're completely unaware of what's under the hood.

With one episode per work day, that would be at least a 3 year project. They should consider this job security and jump at the opportunity.

That would be funny to see happen. Just to hear Jeff's quips about stuff on the QL was more than enough reason for them to actually watch the anime.

I thought you must have your math wrong. Nope, the show has over 600 episodes.

I'm not even gonna say anything.

I checked Wikipedia first. I couldn't believe it myself when I saw the number.

Also, over 600 episodes and counting

Conan is sitting at 745 episodes according to Wiki. I think I stopped at around 200.

Need to catch up on the Manga sometime.

I think the sheer no of comic chapters turn me away from Conan. I'm avid Kindaichi reader though.

And you guys should try Kindaichi if you could find it.
