I want to remember if Jeff said Skate 2 or Skate 3 was his favorite Skating game, and I can't remember.

Skate 2 is the best skateboarding game of all time*. 3 has some cool additions and has a really nice, crisp look to it, but is ultimately inessential.

*That doesn't have Tony Hawk involved.

Watching Vinny fall apart as he plays BotColony is amazing. Even if the voice stuff wasn't broken it seems like it's just a more complicated find the hidden object game.

What do you guys think about Patrick trying out new ideas in the recent articles he has posted ?

I'm all for new ideas, that's always a great thing to do.

However, I think his Xbox 1 article was terrible and useless. The fact that him and/or the mods are censoring any criticism doesn't help.

The X1 article is super weird. Also, don't get me started on the Q&A format for the CliffyB pseudo-news. You can structure a draft like that, to help you publish an actual article, but putting it out raw like that seems rather amateurish.

Patrick's experimenting, though, so it's fine.

The "And" one was the best part, for me. Perpetual torment!

I know for a fact that Bot Colony is true to the experience of voice-controlled games... After all, I experienced Hey You, Pikachu firsthand. I'm a survivor.

As long as valid criticisms that would foster improvement aren't drowned out by "great work, Patrick," I'm all for it.

is this seriously happening? Giant Bomb is better than this, surely

Just started watching this Bot Colony thing after catching the very end. This should be good.

This is the biggest issue I have with the community on the site.

Don't get me wrong I love those guys and the vast majority of the content they've put out over the year has been amazing.

However, the moment you say something negative about any aspect of the site, no matter how polite you are, the message will either get deleted by the mods or you will get a bunch of people that will automatically come to the staff's defense and flame down whatever you said. Most of the time those defensive comments are more hostile than the original criticism but apparently everybody is ok with that.

How can somebody improve and learn from it's mistake if everybody keeps telling him he's perfect?

What's the issue? I'm digging that Patrick is going out of his comfort zone, particularly that Video Thing covering a Story About My Uncle. That being said, it could definitely use some work, like the odd editing and jarring music choices. Letting him know what he could work on to improve doesn't amount to "fuck you, Patrick."

That doesn't sound like what's happening. It sounds like people are saying "this format sucks" and having that comment deleted immediately.

I don't really get why Patrick decided all of a sudden to experiment every week with a different new thing, but I don't mind much. I do mind overly-aggressive moderation though.

Rewatching the pepper grinder segment. Instant classic, fuck me is it perfect.

Also, the game totally nailed what I meant by "right kind of broken", heh.

What was the advice you provided to help him improve that got deleted?

Still, a little caution--we had to wait less than two hours--would have save some headaches. Now, I'm faced with running stories like this, in which I have to consider publishing a news story to disprove a non-story?!

Even ignoring the bad and awkward grammar on display here, this is a horribly condescending/pompous thing to say.

The entire article comes off so high and mighty. Really bad article.

What makes it worse is that the original story was sourced directly from a very legitimate MS employee who would be in the know. I don't really blame outlets for running with it - it's standard practice (not just games journalism) to do so and write "we reached out for comment and will update if we receive one".

I can agree with GB User Truthtellah posts in this thread over at the forums.
Ugh, and I was just recently criticising The Verge and Polygon for going balls deep with those headlines.

We're one step closer to getting a weekly Game of Thrones and Walking Dead article.

Edit: anyone know if Patrick's video content gets as many views as the rest? Maybe with GB East/West ramping up, this is aimed at bolstering his own view numbers?

No matter how good writing is video will be taking over as the primary source of information. I don't know if that is a good thing or a bad thing.

For Giant Bomb it would be a good thing.

If Patrick never wrote another article the site would be just as good. Some of his articles are decent, particularly recaps of recent controversies without his opinion injected in. But in the end, Giant Bomb is the videos and podcast, at least to me.

The podcasts are seen as an extraneous waste of resources by CBSi. They would sooner get rid of that than revenue-generating articles. Small business man simply cannot compete.

That said, I've never really bothered reading many of their articles. At most, as a near-daily Giant Bomb visitor, I probably look at two to four articles per month. So I doubt I'd miss them if they went away entirely, either.

Anything in particular? I can see them deleting things that come off as hostile, but if the comments aren't outright shitting on him, that's a problem.

I haven't seen this, despite the clumsy capriciousness of their moderators.

Yeah, I suppose they're all being crushed to increase viewership.

Explains all the quick looks and streams and such, I suppose.

No, that's the crew being left alone and people actually being in the offices, and those offices are functional. :P

Holy hell Bot Colony is frustrating. I am surprised how patient Phillips is. He is a good new addition.

The thing that gets me the most is the half-a-minute delay when Jimmy is given a command. It's downright bizarre and makes it seem like a tech demo instead of a retail product.

You know, all this time I thought you guys were talking about Philips the large electronics corporation, who might have made this game.

He always has to finish each animation, including his "talking" animation. So even if he's about to do the thing you asked, he'll stand there and talk for a few seconds before even starting to move. It's amazing :P

Also, it's early access.

The developers claim that the game requires servers in order for the voice/text recognition to work, so that might explain the delay as everything gets relayed back and forth.
