PlayStation Network Thread (Vita/PS3/PS4) | July 2014

for those of you who play your Vita at home, how do you play?

(a) on your bed
(b) at your computer table
(c) on the sofa
(d) the porcelain throne

Team C mostly

Sometimes in bed too.

A and B, mostly B. I try to play a bit before going to sleep, but I'm always so tired that I'm barely able to keep myself awake. So I just play sitting on my PC chair.

Lumines is a really nice game to fight insomnia. Doing some puzzles while listening to that cool music.

All but mainly (b) while waiting for things on the PC to happen :)

A lot more (a) lately, started up FFX HD last night and I think I'll be playing an hour a night in bed at least from here on out. So fucking good.

Aside from DanganRona 2 and Akiba's Trip, what are the other Japanese games releasing on the Vita in the west in coming months?

Disgaea 4 (August), Senran Kagura: Shinovi Versus (September), Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 1 (August) and Natural Doctrine (September). Project Diva f 2nd is supposed to come in Q3 as well.

Is this confirmed? Last I heard was SV on fall (no specific month) and Dekamori on winter.

this might be a dumb question but would people buy games at retail versus getting them digitally? let's say hyper light drifter is $14.99 on psn, but $24.99 for an extremely limited one-time physical release (let's say, between 5,000 and 10,000 units). would anyone be interested?
I backed HLD to where I'd get a code at launch, and I would still buy a limited physical release in a heartbeat! That game looks pretty amazing. I love buying physical Vita games. I'd like to support the devs more. The boxart would likely be pretty dam slick also.

a, b, c, d, and e - everywhere. I do not leave my house without my Vita. I have a case that carries everything in a small easy to carry package. It has everything Vita I would need. The case even can be broken down to just have the system itself, so I can slip it in my back pocket. I never mind waiting for anything, because I can usually just whip out the Vita and get some quick gaming in. To me, that is the whole point with handhelds. My PSP was the same way. I will even sit in my gaming set up, playing a cross buy/play game on the Vita because I enjoy it more on this beautiful handheld than the larger system/screen.

Hey guys, heres an update on Duke Nukem for PS3/Vita:

Oh HELLLL yes! I can't wait for this. Hopefully it sells decently well, and the system is easy enough to port other classics over! I.e. Heretic, Hexen, Shadow Warrior, Rise of the Triad, etc.. I know not all are made by the same teams, but a man can dream!

Amazon has the release date listed as September 30th, but we all know those dates can change in a flash. Nothing is being listed as far as ship dates yet tho.
No, VG+ had the 30th September as release date but it could be just a placeholder.
Well, this makes two places with the same date. Could be legit.

Just finished Trails in the Sky. What a game.

That ending though.
So much of a cliffhanger, and they even had a teaser for SC after the credits... Although I have to admit I saw most of the final plot twists coming, Alba was given way too much spotlight to have such little importance and Joshua's past was easy to guess. That said, the characters are just so likeable it had a lot of impact anyway.
The wait for SC is gonna be hard, I can't imagine having waited since this originally came out D:

What is this case which is so wise in the ways of carrying everything Vita one needs?

Sony didn't try too much to get big games when Vita was somewhat important, what makes you think that without that declaration and policy things would have been different?
We are in the hands of third parties' will almost from the beginning and despite everything Vita is still here getting games.

Who's to say SCEJ didn't try to get big games but got denied by fear of the platform's viability? I think it's abundantly clear that at least in Japan, there's money to be made on the platform. The userbase isn't huge or anything, but it's at the size where it can support more than Not Monster Hunter 28 and Fanservice Title 291.

It's not just Yoshida's dumb comments, but the overall tone and lack of confidence from the western branches. Even for Japanese third parties that are willing to invest in Vita, there's always a doubt of localization because of how poorly things are going in the west. We have no clue if God Eater 2 and Phantasy Star Nova will ever get localized, and those are two of the biggest games the platform has.

Hmm how hard will it be for sony to implement two player mode over adhoc for PS1 games?

Wishful thinking I guess!

btw bought Sly Collection and downloading 1 now.

Too soon for Gamescom?

Honestly i don't think that the number of the hunting/fanservice games has anything to do with the size of the userbase, hunting games are here because devs want to take advantage of the absence of Monster Hunter, fanservice games... well niche games sell better on Vita so that could be why there are so many, but to be fair 3ds has 3 Senran Kagura games and a heavy fanservice dungeon crawler is on it too(Stardust Amazoness or whatever), there's Gal Gun on PS360, Dream Club started on home consoles and so on, soft fanservice is present in almost every Japanese game, fanservice is not only on Vita.

Don't forget that Vita is the second best selling platform in Japan, so it's not that niche there, if Japanese developers do those games is because on Vita they would sell better.
Tecmo Koei did Toukiden, but it's developing all the musou games too, SS is still the best game that Comcept did and we'll get MN9 anyway, most of those developers that made fanservice games... well that's what they usually do, so you can't pretend something that different, so in the end we are not losing that much.

The problem of Vita aren't hunting and fanservice games, it would be almost like saying that Vita doesn't get AAA games because there are too many indies, the problem is to get those developers that are not working on Vita, but as i said if Sony didn't do too much when they cared for Vita would they do now? Developers themselves will keep deciding if working on Vita as they are doing almost since the beginning.

Saying that Japanese support is just hunting and fanservice game is false though, there are many different kind of games coming.

About localizations i give you a point, but there's the localization team for that(if Yoshida didn't cut it for Vita), other than various localizers that seem to love Vita, so i'm not too worried since almost everything is arriving, if PSNova doesn't arrive here is not Vita's fault, latest Yakuza games didn't arrive too and the PS3 userbase is 80+ millions.

My import copy of Child of Light Complete Edition for Vita came in the mail today. Can't use any of the bonus DLC though since I use a US account. I dunno if anyone in Europe can use the codes with a regular download edition of CoL Vita (if such a thing exists, idk if it does) but if you can and anyone here wants em I'll give them to ya. First to quote gets them.

What is this case which is so wise in the ways of carrying everything Vita one needs?
It's a wonderous case. The PDP Pull and Go Folio, made by PDP. I should say though, it *was* a wonderful case. They recently redesigned it, and I really dislike their redesign, but it's mostly the same case. It's about the size of one of those 12 cd wallets. Not hard shell, but very sturdy cardboard like design. It's soft-ish, but it definitely reduces shock impact. I've accidentally tossed the big and small case across parking lots, dropped it straight down 5+ feet onto cement, and other terrible things that my butterfingers can't seem to stop doing, and it's never been damaged. The case zips open, and on the right there are slots for 19 Vita games, and 2 memory cards. On the left, there is a pouch that holds all the charging cables. If you pack the cables just right, you can put the official Sony Portable Vita Charger on the top half on the cords, and it works very well. Next to that, is a removable second case that the Vita sits in. This is where the new differs from the old.

The old version flipped open, featured a soft inside with a pull cord that was behind the Vita, allowing very easy removal from the case. Also, it had two recessed areas for the sticks to slide down, and they were large enough to fit the biggest analog stick covers when they are on the Vita. Velcro'ed in via two strips along the back of the case. The removable case also has 4 slots for games. The new removable case is fairly close...but...the softer inside is replaced by something not as soft, the recessed areas for the sticks are gone, as is the pull cord for the Vita removal. The removable case itself feels a little flimsier, too, which sucks. But the velcro on the new one is better, it's one large thick strip of velcro. 4 game slots still present.

You can tell the difference of new vs old via the design of the outer larger case. If it is a smoother, flat black design, it's the new version. The older case has diamond like stichings all over the case, like sleeping bags or something. I love the old case, my current case. It's the best thing, it literally has everything I need for hours and hours of Vita, since the charger can refuel the system 1.5 times at least. They were sold out everywhere for a while, and then I saw one at my local Gamestop several months back, and I snatched it right up. It wasn't until weeks later, when I bought my second Vita and needed a case, did I realize the design changes. By that time, I couldn't return the case, since it was open and I had exceeded the time for returns. It still works very well, but I don't trust the newer removable case quite as much as the old one.

TL;DR - Case holds 23 physical games, 2 extra memory cards, charging cables, portable charger, the all mighty microfiber cloth, and the Unit itself. Recent redesign made the newer case slightly more flimsy, but overall it's not a bad case for $20-30. The older version of the case is great though, a wonderful purchase. PDP Pull and Go Folio. Newer case smooth exterior, older version diamond stitchings all over, both black in color. OG OLED Vita only, the 2k will likely bounce around in it like crazy.

Strider has floored me. As a huge fan of the original arcade game and the genesis port, I'm so happy to see the franchise return and at such a high bar quality wise. I never played the old NES version that had the Metroidvania (ugh, that term sucks) type progression, but I'm a huge fan of that sub genre as well.

I didn't think this would be such a long game, either. It's not overstaying it's welcome or anything, as the pace is propelled forward with each upgrade and boss fight. I haven't had this much fun with this type of game since Shadow Complex, and I think Strider is even outdoing that incredible title!

It's a shame Double Helix was acquired by Amazon after putting out this and the new Killer Instinct. They were really on a roll. I hate to see them delegated to creating titles on such a fringe device as the Fire TV.

Thanks for reminding me about this. I fully intended to download it to have it in my 'collection' but this mini review has convinced me that I need to play it for sure. I loved Shadow Complex and anything that can approach it in fun/quality is top of my list.

Can someone please explain the trails games to me. As I understand it there are a triology on the psp (only in japan?) and then there are a couple of vita games (one isometric and one 3d and a second 3d one on it's way).

Are all of these games connected and is that the reason to why noone have localized them.

I remember seeing a picture of three books that symbolises all the text from three games in a series, is that a portrait of the trails games?

To answer that second question, essentially yes. Narrative and shared lore connection abound. Then you have the platforms of the unlocalised releases making it less feasible. And finally the sheer herculean effort of translating the games which have several phone books of lines. Thus no localisation (except the upcoming SC release).

bro... it's nice to see someone I can agree with on this game. Still my favorite this year, I think. As always, gotta say I'd have killed for a Vita version, especially since I played it on PC at a super low resolution to run it when I wasn't supposed to be able to.

Same, got mine yesterday. No idea why they couldn't just put it on the gamecard, since the game is only 1.1GB on PSN, and I'm pretty sure downloads still have a small cost levied against them.

...course, I wouldn't have this problem in the first place, if retail wasn't such a maybe-maybe-not situation on Vita in every region.

I'm not too well informed as I'm not really into the series but AFAIK there's a trilogy(PSP), then a duology (PSP, remade on Vita) and then another duology(PS3/Vita).

First two games of the trilogy are/are being localyzed.

So I did a 100% run through Another World. As I said in my original post, it plays well but is really is a artifact from another era of video games. I don't say that affectionately -- I don't think the game holds up very well, as a game.

This is great. I'd love to try some Duke 3D on my PSV. Even though I know going back to older games (see above) can sometimes be an exercise in disappointment.

I haven't played Another World since SNES/Genesis when it was Out of This World, and never got far in it. It was wonderful to finally knock it out. It was still as wonky and obtuse as ever, but my 2nd time through the game only lasted about 30-40, and the controls felt second nature by then... like an amazing little short film, from the Plague Dogs/When the Wind Blows era. I think, in atmosphere, art direction, style and ideas, it still shines above many games.

In a way, it never held up to begin with, and was always mechanically stifled compared to straight up console platformer classics in it's era... but god damn did it push atmosphere and cinematic feel forward like a mother fucker. I appreciate it more now, as more than just the progenitor of one of my favorite small subgenres, but it was everything stuff like Half-Life and Uncharted are credited for in a way.

I'm pretty sure most people would hate it, though.
