3ds. Should I?!

XL, definitely XL

No. It is an old, childish, and gimmicky system with under powered hardware and a cheap design. I have one, and the screen actually hurts my eyes due to how low res it is. If you actually walk around with it, you will look like an idiot, and there isn't much worth playing on it other than Nintendo games, which are both easy and highly repetitive. All of the networking features were designed for Japan and don't work well anywhere else unless you happen to know a large amount of people with 3DSes.

Just buy games on a smartphone, if you have one. They are cheaper, and playing games on a smartphone in public does not make you look like a loser. The Vita has better hardware, but has very few games worth playing, is too expensive, and has been practically abandoned by Sony. And of course, like the 3DS, it is embarrassing to play in public.

Basically, it isn't worth it.

Well, yes, if you like playing video games. FE: A, AC, Pokemon X/Y, Zelda titles, Kid Icarus, Senran Kagura, and the upcoming Persona Q among many, many others should be on your short list.

Its a really solid handheld, however I don't use mine all that much now that I have finished Fire Emblem and Bravely Default. Waiting for S.T.E.A.M. and Persona Q.

That being said, you should get one with a copy of Fire Emblem. I am sure there are other fantastic games out there as well, I just tend to use mine on the train to and from work playing RPG's.

Get the 3DS XL and get Animal Crossing New Leaf. When you are finished with that, get Fire Emblem Awakening, Resident Evil Revelations and Kirby Triple Deluxe.

How are the refurbs?

Anyone with a refurb wish to comment?

I bought a Wii U refurb and it's working great, just want to know if the quality is consistent with the 3DS.

Get the XL also I have the XL Zelda addition and love it.

Finally somebody is saying what we are all thinking!

There's so many good games. Here's a list of some of the ones that I own.

Super Mario 3D Land
The Legend Of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time 3D
Fire Embling: Awakening
Mario Kart 7
Bravely Default
Kid Icarus: Uprising
Pokemon X/Y
Pushmo
Crashmo
Animal Crossing: New Leaf

There's like a dozen more games that I still want to buy too. I also own some great virtual console games. 3DS is my favorite system ever.

If you remember and played space harrier in the arcade then try that also.
If someone came up to me while I was sitting in a space harrier cabinet as a kid and told me I would be playing this on a handheld in 3D without glasses in the future, I would have called the police.

I don't play many games these days but I bought a 3DSXL about a month ago to get back into the hobby. I'm really loving it so far, but my concerns are:

- The screen doesn't look brilliant if you've been using high quality smartphones.
- Library. My list of wanted games is still single figures so I'm a little worried about mileage long-term.
- Software isn't cheap (coming from a Steam-centric gaming experience.)
- I now want a Wii-U as well.

I recommend making a list of games that catch your eye before taking the plunge.

Truly grotesque.

XL is worth it for the comfort factor.

The fuck is this?

I definitely wouldn't recommend it since the hardware/screen/OS are pretty miserable, but if you can get past that and the games are literally the only part of a platform you care about, then there are some very highly-rated and well-regarded games on it. I've missed out on some great games on it because I truly hate playing on my 3DS. The XL is probably more comfortable though (I have the original model), at least, so if you do get it, at least get that model.

Great system, games are expensive though. Purchased one recently hoping to go to the store and see a bunch of discounted games from the launch. Everything is still full price. Even some DS games are nearly full price.

Don't forget the Picross-e series, and the eshop.

It is my own, highly subjective opinion. It can be neither right nor wrong; an opinion is not a fact.

You judge people on the base of what console are playing (Those who play 3ds or vita is a loser?).
I judge people on the base of what they say, and is my opinion that you are a loser, but is only my opinion.

Reposting what I wrote in another thread but applicable here.

My wife got me my 3DS XL a few weeks ago and I'm hooked on the system.

Some background, I had a DS Lite, loved it, but moved on when the PS3 came into its own. I've always toyed with going back to a portable but never could justify it at the time.

The best thing about hopping into the 3DS now is not having to wait for the heavy hitters to come out since most of them are out already. Right now I'm rotating daily between Zelda ALBW, Mario 3D Land, Pushmo, Animal Crossing, Mario Golf, or play some online matches of Mario Kart 7. Not having to wait for the Mario game or the Zelda game to come out is a boon to my enjoyment of the system.

Downloading games from the eshop is pretty awesome since I'm used to fast switching between games on my iPhone so it kind of simulates that. It's almost feeding some new ADD syndrome in me since I play a few levels in Mario, switch to Pushmo and finish a few puzzles, then switch to Animal Crossing and catch some bugs or fish, and then switch to Zelda and beat a dungeon. But I'm lovin' it.

I still have Fire Emblem, MH3U, Pokemon, DKC Returns, and loads of eShop games to play as well (the Guild series, Shovel Knight, Cave Story, etc.)

My PS3's literally collecting dust lately.

I did not say playing on these consoles makes you a loser. I said that playing on these consoles, in public, makes you look like a loser. I probably should have just said that it makes you look childish instead.

So when you you see someone playing a 3ds, and you think:

"Look at him, look like a loser" you aren't judging?

Poor troll.........

Thanks all. Prolly will pick one up next week!

I think OP has made their decision. Please stop quoting me.

Well, I don't think that, but most other people do, based on my experience as a college student.

You sound really insecure

That is because I am really insecure. If I had known posting a simple opinion would elect such a reaction, I would not have posted here.

I think a larger proportion of people in this generation are playing handhelds at home, since they are quite large and bulky (especially in the case of the XL and the Vita). I don't think the OP will find that too big of a problem. He also seems to like Nintendo games, so the suggestion that they are easy and repetitive probably doesn't apply to him to the extent of your case. The cheap and underpowered system , in my opinion, wouldn't apply in this situation unless the hardware itself prevents you from playing (i.e ergonomic design/UI design) as he is primarily consuming the content i.e. games. I think it's more the small screen of the 3DS instead of the lower resolution that is hurting your eyes. Although the the low resolution, I do agree, does not help with lowering eye strain. Although the networking features are severely underdeveloped from a security and accessibility POV relative to other platforms, the suggestion in previous posts of yours that the Nintnedo Network system is hampered enough to impact your online experience does not really correspond with the consensus of owners.

Jesus Christ!

The Zelda XL edition looks horrible!

I think OP has made their decision. Please stop quoting me.

To state your opinion, as you state repeatedly for some odd reason, and to not respond to debate is at odds with the aim of critical discussion on this site.

I'm thinking about buying XL myself but it has so few jrpg/srpgs that I just can't justify buying one. At least not yet. Fire Emblem, Bravely Default and Etrian Odyssey IV are not enough :P Oh well, maybe next year...

Well, I don't think that, but most other people do, based on my experience.

I didn't really mind your first post about the hardware and software. But judging a system based on what you think other people think of you while you play it? Unless you can read minds then no, I don't think most people think this. You've said it yourself already. This is just cementing the impression that you are in fact really insecure. That critique only applies to your own mindset.

SMTIV, SMT Soul Hackers, Kingdom Hearts, and Pokemon.

XL, get an XL. And don't hesitate in trying Tomodachi Life, there is a demo.

kinda off-topic...
I'm kinda interested on Tomodachi Life, but I haven't made a proper research because it looks like a crazy and unique game that I want to experience myself...

just a quick question:
does the game works with "real time" like Animal Crossing?. I kinda hate the fact to be doing "chores" at certain times of the day, or being punished for not playing enough. I'm 30 years old and I don't exactly have all the time in the world to play.

thanks and sorry for the little derailment.

Not really. It seems to go much more at your own pace than Animal Crossing, but it feels like there is less to do.

Personally, the 3DS is completely worth it. It has a good library of games which are quite enjoyable.

As for which one to get, I'd say XL.

No. Wait for another redesign and buy it at launch.

Looking at the pattern of 3DS releases in the last few years, the next redesign should come 1 year 1 month after the 2DS launch and therefore sometime this winter.

Since the DSi (and including the 3DS releases) each DS revision has come out 1 year - 1 year 3 months after. The 3DS releases have had 1 year 3/4 months release between them. If we're following this trend, there could be one at the end of this year/start of next year. The former is the better bet. I hope earlier than this, because I'm looking to purchase a 3DS this summer.
