3DS is a fantastic system if you actually try to get into the library and not just let it sit there, like most people do with their handhelds.
Pretty much every game in my library I can HIGHLY recommend so, I'll here is my list:
(you can't go wrong with the 3DS library unless you buy those crappy budget games)
Ridge Racer 3D
Mario Kart 7
Fire Emblem Awakening
Kid Icarus Uprising
Kirby Triple Deluxe
Yoshi's New Island (I know it's not as good as previous games, but I still like it)
Star Fox 64 3D
Pokemon X
Luigi's Mansion 2
Super Mario 3D Land
Pilotwings Resort
I had Steel Diver, Dead or Alive Dimensions and Resident Evil Revelaitons.
-Steel Diver was a fun little thing, but didn't have much substance and not worth more than $10 imo.
-DoA was a brilliant fighting game, but I got DoA 5 on console and saw no reason to keep it. If you want an on the go fighter you can't get any better.
-RE Revelations is an awesome RE game, better than 5 and 6. But I re-bought on console for the improvements.

All of the networking features were designed for Japan and don't work well anywhere else unless you happen to know a large amount of people with 3DSes.
Just buy games on a smartphone, if you have one. They are cheaper, and playing games on a smartphone in public does not make you look like a loser. The Vita has better hardware, but has very few games worth playing, is too expensive, and has been practically abandoned by Sony. And of course, like the 3DS, it is embarrassing to play in public.
Basically, it isn't worth it.
Wow. Both handhelds have deep libraries if you actually look. Not only would
anybody look an idiot playing
any handheld while walking (watch were you goddamn walk!) You don't
need to buy a handheld to play them in public. You buy them to experience the game library wherever you want. Smartphone gaming is more convenient to whip out before an appointment, on the train, or during lunch, but doesn't compare at all in actual game play quality and experience.
Also since when have Nintendo games been easy? I would say most of the shooters on the market are way easier than most Nintendo games.
