Actually that one would have been a foul, penalty, and red card if he touched Klose because he sticks his leg out just to catch him.

(although Romero only stuck his leg out because he wasn't going to touch Klose, I doubt he was actually trying to kick him)

So according to that logic, Klose could have just run into Romero while Romero's in the air like that and it would be a penalty? That isn't how it works.

Oh boy. That logic is absurd

Nope that's just how those situations are officiated on every level of football.

This is ridiculous. Look where the challenge happened, hint: in the edge of the area. Close to being a handball by Neuer even. Higuain is looking at the ball the whole time and Neuer blindsides him. Arguing that it was somewhat a foul by Higuain and that it was his fault is the most absurd stretch. He didn't "walk under Neuer and took out his legs" at any time. Look at the video ffs.

The ref made the wrong call. It should've been a throw-in. It was a reckless challenge, but that was it.

Neuer got the ball first, Higuain didn't, simple as that. If it was the other way round, Neuer would have been sent off.

Wow, what a world cup, and what a final, some thoughts on all this emotional rollercoaster:

- Argentina's performance with (almost) the same team of the previous years shows that yes, you can have the best players of the world, yet you do need a coherent strategy in order to make it work. Ditching Maradona has been one of the best things that Argentina ever did.

- Spain's implosion was a hardcore case of the innovator's dilemma + hugely unmotivated players. Every team in this wc has already adapted and properly countered tiki-taka (while incorporating a bit of it into their playstyles), Real-Madrid VS Barça style. We have seen some Starcraft level of meta-game here (and some old and tired Spanish players too).

- Brazil's debacle was predictable. Brazilian team has been pure hype since a long time, despite the talent of their players. Utter lack of cohesion or anything resembling strategy, they forgot that their previous titles were born not because they abbandoned "jogo bonito" per se, but because they were able to reinforce their most lacking areas (mainly defense) in order to have some balance

- The final was close, Argentina was brilliant and played some of its best matches, but my God, did the Germans shone. Great soccer from all fronts, but in the end the best team won

- Argentina was held together by Mascherano, not Messi, which was almost a non-presence during this WC while his team mate organized the defenseby himself on a truthly impressive and, unfortunately, underrated way

- Holland, my forever favourite dark horse, chocking yet again :( well, Argentina had one of their best teams this year, so you guys can be proud of what you did

- South American soccer is reaching is prime and finally diversyfing outside the two juggernauts (Brazil & Argentina), thanks to the talent of teams like Chile and Colombia, but the whole CONCAGAF tune about FIFA's alleged eurocentrism is patently laughable. First European WC in South American soil, yup, totes overrated soccer, that one

- Is that a proper American WC team what I am seeing? Holy crap. You guys have future, soccer will be even greater with you Americans on board. I will be glad to see your competitive spirit and obsession with statistics incorporated into the beautiful game! :D

I am all for some other player getting the best player trophy of this WC but I really don't know why people downplay Messi so fucking much. He made 4 goals and assisted most of other Argentian goals. He was definitely very important player for Argentina.

As long as people think that you only have to touch the ball first to be free to do whatever you want to the other player this discussion is worthless. There is no such thing as Ball gespielt.

Coldplay? Seriously? I didn't really like BBC's choice of song either... but Coldplay, for a Brazilian WC montage... I don't even... ewwwww

Yes I like Coldplay. A song about sky full of stars seems fitting for the 4th star Germany got.

Those still thinking that Neuer's challenge was a foul, just have a look if you can find any Argentinians arguing strongly for a penalty. There was hardly any protest, so even they know that wasn't a foul by Neuer, if anything, it was a foul by Higuain as he walked under Neuer and took out his legs.

Players are supposed to get out of the way of the GK in those situations, as the GK will get that ball every time, the only possible result from going in there are potential injuries for both sides.

Romero does it even more extreme in this situation, but Klose does the correct thing and goes out of Romero's way:

I just laugh whenever I see an argentine fan crying that they were robbed of a penalty on Neuer's challenge. Even Olé, the biggest sports newspaper on Argentina is crying over it.

If there is one national team that should never complain about being robbed it's Argentina that stole two world cups.

Even in Argentina there was a lot of talk about how the military dictatorship bribed Peru to lose by more than 4 goals on 1978 so that they could advance to the finals (they needed to win by 4 - 0 to keep going). Peru had only conceded 6 goals at that world cup until they reached the semi finals and lost by another 6 goals. They were making a very solid world cup.

And who could forget Maradona's hand of god on 1986 against England?

And while they lost to Germany on 1990 finals they doped some brazilian players water to win against then. Maradona himself confirmed this on a TV show.

I wanted the World Cup to stay on Latin or South America, but Germany was the best team of the WC by far and won fair and square.

It just really doesn't capture the atmosphere or feel of the tournament for me at all.

Each to their own I guess.

Well I'm not saying that it is the perfect song to capture the feel of the whole tournament but it's a catchy song and I like it.

I actually liked the BBC montage more that they did after the Brazil-Germany match. Unfortunately that seems to be taken down on youtube.

Yeah BBC have done much better montages. The one yesterday was quite weak for them.

But still a lot better than that ESPN one :)

I don't think Holland choked. The expectation was a group stage exit. They proved everyone wrong, but each game went progressively worse. Probably because the attack being figured out, RVP was never completely fit and by the knockout phase he was easily contained.

You'll also need that bit of luck to win, things need to happen in your favor. Germany faced Brazil at the right time, they would still be shit with both Thiago and Neymar but their morale would've been different for sure. They suddenly lost their golden boy. I doubt Brazil would lose 7-1 under normal circumstances, such a win instilled fear and gave a shitload of confidence to the mannschaft as well, not to mention they could save energy during the second half. In the final Messi had a 100% chance, a fresh Messi would've scored for sure. He also collapsed after the first half (on which he started well, he outplayed Hummels for example), completely stopped running. I think this final was that one match too many for him. Sabella also made a mistake with Aguero, while the injury of Kramer actually worked out well for Germany.

Van Gaal took some risks against Argentina and they didn't pay off this time. Starting with De Jong proved to be a miscalculation, it cost him a sub. Taking a fatiqued RVP out meant he couldn't try a penalty and it meant a keeper change was out of the question. LVG gambled on a pre-pens win. And such a thing was in the cards but it didn't happen.

Argentina scraped through and though they played a good final I don't think it would be right if they grabbed the cup. Germany was the most footballing side, with the most goals and best team spirit.

We definitely didn't choke. With the players we had we made an remarkable achievement. No one thought we'd get this far. It's what makes the loss way more easy to bare.

We will probably win a trophy again, we didn't lose all finals (1988 was an easy win). What could we do? 1978 was corrupted. 2010 was against Spain which are perhaps the strongest, most dominant side in history that would completely destroy Italy in the 2012 final. They completely outplayed the likes of Germany like twice, yet we were this close to shock them.

But we need the right generation for that. We're a small country, and can't feed off an infinite supply of talents. Our league is shit too. Our mentality has been stellar since 2010. That was the only thing missing from the golden generation of the 90's, back then we actually choked. Although those guys say they were mostly in there to play the beautiful game. I guess that holds some merit, 1974 is still one of the most beloved squads in history. Though they won shit.

Neat montage. That flying goal by van Persie really was one of the best of this WC.

Not being biased but if Rodriquez his goal wins over Van Persie's it is definitely wrong. His goal was great but has been shown before. Van Persie's goal? I have not seen anything like that thus far.

I agree. They were both great but Van Persie's was special.
