For anyone wondering, there weren't any real spoilers for Valiant Hearts on Bombin' unless you consider the game taking place during WWI a spoiler.

3 > 2

Nah man, my nostalgia won't allow it.

If you want to do something in your life. The key is not to use your own money - Greg (Geoffrey) Gerstmann

Greg's correct again. But I'm considering any crowdfunding for Shaq-Fu 2 a scam by default, and Shaq will need to prove me wrong. It's more worthwhile to pay money to a potato salad kickstarter than to that shit.

I dont mean to sound harsh, but the latest Bombin' is not a fun listen. It seems every topic in the show gets dragged back to the hosts personal struggles against all that is evil on the Internet (apparently there is nothing good there anymore). Then there is persistent laughing a joking as they reminisce about how they were spat on and told to get cancer is it all a bit much. It feels like a subject that needed a much better outlet than a "morning show" on the website.

Haven't listened to it yet but usually I feel like Alex provides enough levity to "counter" Patrick's seriousness.

Idle Thumbs has been 2008-era chaos since Danielle started

it's beautiful

She has been such a breath of fresh air for Idle Thumbs. They have been in a rut for a while now.

As for Bombin', Patrick really needs Alex there for balance. He was missed today. (Edit: which I see Fantastapotamus has just said.)

Also although I like Danielle a lot, I wouldn't want her on the Bombcast. I would fear for poor Chuck's health.

SPOILERS AHHHHHHH!!!!

seriously though it seems cool and i want to check it out one of these days so i'm kinda in blackout mode (similarly with Transistor)

I feel like you're painting this really out of tone and context. GaymerX happened over the weekend, she went to it, she's gay, so naturally Patrick was asking her and she was talking about that. And then the tangents that come from that, the panels, people who were there etc. She didn't say any of this in a 'poor me' light, she was just talking about her background and what she got up to at the weekend all in a pretty light hearted tone. I think you're finding mountains where there are none.

Is Black:The Fall early access? Vinny didn't say :D

Srsly though, dude almost seems embarrassed to be showing it.

As for those kickstarter dinners. I think dinner with devs could be fun - but also weird knowing they are only there because you paid for it - but that dinner with Shaq would be awful. You know he would be super resentful, assuming he even turned up at all. Like those awkward pop star back stage meet and greets you can buy.

I stopped regularly listening to Idle Thumbs awhile ago.

I don't know, just not as interesting or funny as they used to be.

Might be because they stopped talking about the ridiculousness of mainstream games, and focused on more indie games that they actually enjoy.

I agree. And as a gay dude I found the discussion extra fascinating. GaymerX sounds rad, and I hope Dan and/or Jason (Jason could come on since he could talk about Evo too!) talks about it on the Bombcast since they were both there for a day. Really liked this episode even if it might've been a bit too serious (but then again, that's cool once in a while).

Sick of hearing about Klepek's personal journey. I do not care. At all. Be entertaining.

For fear of dragging this thread farther from a GB focus, I want to suggest you check out the Danielle episodes of Idle Thumbs. Assuming, of course, that you don't have an adverse reaction to her independantly. She has been filling that old Nick role from when he was in the games press of bringing up recent games.

Also stopped listening because of a lot of talk about games I've never heard of. Then I forget what game they're talking about so I'm listening to a conversation just waiting for them to say the name of the game again.

There is a nice amount of plot on the top releases part of the site this week.

I wonder what the numbers are on Worth Reading for Patrick? Everytime I click on that link I just wonder why the fuck did I just click this? So I guess maybe I'm part of the problem?

He just quotes his own articles without responding to any critisim. Then 90% percent of the tweets/articles he quotes come from his friends.

Come on Patrick, branch the fuck out.

I haven't read Worth Reading in a long time. I thought it was supposed to be about highlighting cool articles from other sites. I also rarely check out Worth Playing. Rock Paper Shotgun's Live Free Play Hard was so much better before it finished. Even without it I still think their posts about free games are better.

He does highlight some interesting indie stuff but no his article links/tweets are a joke. He should be highlighting up and coming writers but he tends to highlight his friends (think about how much Zoe Q. gets talked about).

I enjoyed Bombin, but mostly because I'd never heard of Daniel before and she came across really likeable (her personal experiences at Gaymerx were genuinely heartwarming and mostly avoided typical 'feel sorry for me' stuff).

That said, I totally get where you're coming from. I like Patrick as a guy, but the enthusiast press' continuing desire to make the story about themselves is my number one gripe with the industry. Pat's gotten slightly better at restraining himself after going through a real bad period of it not too long ago, but he still slips back in now and then.

I get it, games as a medium are still quite new, shallow and heavily PR controlled; and often it can be difficult to find the passion to talk about them constantly (outside the odd few personal favs every year), but he needs to find something to do to avoid that spiral.

Working alone in Chicago must be hard and probably limited his ability to break news (difficult to network for new sources and find leads), but he needs to find a new 'thing' outside of personal anecdotes or navel gazing with other members of the press. Hell, I'd be cool if he just became dedicated to doing in-depth interviews/profiles with devs.

The two things I most strongly agree with in the recent postings are that 1. Danielle is cool. She is one of the better parts of Polygon, I think. 2. Patrick could use an editor. I don't think he has ever been a particularly good writer, but his recent written output has been worse than usual.
I think he needs more than an editor tbh, he needs to find better subject matter/direction. I hate comparing him to Jason Schreier, because it's easy to say "be like one of the best guys in the industry", but he could do so much more in his position of relative freedom that a lot of writers would kill for.

You will get no argument for me. I think the state of game 'journalism' is laughable when the Xbox DRM stuff is lauded as exemplary reporting. Patrick's strengths as a journalist, I think, are networking and his interviews that result from that networking. I could say more about his output, but I really don't want to come off like a jerk. I know lots of people love his content, and I personally love that he has raised the social awareness of the site and the community (despite the growing pains evident with the harassment last month). So, I am glad he is part of the site even though I disagree with him a lot of times.

I am only criticizing the writing aspect because my issues aren't personal, but with the state of journalism in the industry. I know a few journalists at newspapers and magazines, and they are all impeccable writers. In light of that, I think it's sad that, as you said, someone like Patrick holds such a powerful position but churns out poor content while navel gazing on twitter and in video content. He has status that few game journalists have, and it would be nice if the bar was set higher.

Perfectly summed up, this is pretty much where I'm at.

AM show was ok for a very brief period but I can't really stand to listen to it anymore. Such a boring, uninspired echo chamber of a podcast. On top of that they don't have that great chemistry (although it's nowhere near Will/Norm levels of bad); a lot of the time it just feels like Patrick waiting for Alex to stop talking so he can continue an unrelated point on his train of thought.

I love Bombin' in the A.M. but I cringe every time Patrick needs to explain and introduce every topic to the listeners as if they've never heard of it before. There are certainly some things that warrant that, but there's no need to spell out everything. I wish Alex would actually call him out on that.

I'd be interested to see Patrick write more about games and less about the industry. He likes to use the word 'critic' when talking about himself and his peers, even though he couldn't be more of a 'journalist' if he tried. Kinda funny, actually.

I like Bombin' a lot and appreciate how Patrick has raised awareness for issues that probably wouldn't be brought up on Giant Bomb, but yeah, I feel like he needs a new thing. Maybe more in-depth articles and interviews? I'd be more interested in that then more solo video content, which I don't especially enjoy beyond Spooking occasionally. I really loved the Giant Bomb Chicago livestreams, but those are probably done for a while if not forever.

EDIT: According to Twitter there is gonna be a new episode of the Lost podcast tonight. Maybe recorded beforehand? I

Hearing the GaymerX talk on Bombin, I still think it's pretty ridiculous that GB had zero coverage on the event. It was even hosted in the same city as the GB West Office so I can't help but be disappointed to see zero stuff from them.

Not her specifically, I find Sean pretty hard to take to be honest and though she seems fine I need a higher than 33% funny human ratio on a pod before my mind wanders. No Jake = all ache.
I feel the same about Sean, something about him is just...I just never really liked him as a Nick replacement (or even a Steve replacement). When Nick came back I was saved, but he seems so infrequent that I stopped listening.

The only reason to cover a consumer convention (for them) is to have a panel.

A panel hosted by 5 white straight(?) dudes at gaymerx lmao sure.

God damn it Giant Bomb, Dan was the tipping point and now I'm watching Raw for the first time in well over a decade.

This is so dumb.

This is so amazing.

Bo Dallas is an inspiration. I Bolieve.

I'm pretty sure Dan and Jason spent the weekend at GaymerX, so I wouldn't be surprised thye will provide some coverage soon.

that probably involves scheduling and figuring out who has to go to what... that and the majority of the audience wasn't exactly asking for coverage and it's not a huge event like E3 or PAX...

This is what it would take. people making the effort to do things outside of their comfort zone. while we dont know jason and dan's comfort zone we're all pretty familiar with how the rest of the duders work and what some of their priorities are. That usually centers around content for their viewers that they know will work.
