Fighting Games Weekly | July 14-20 | Bracket Resets Full of Tears (of Joy?)

I can make a pretty good guess as to what it is but if Q is gonna be this tight about it, might as well let the crowd get hype. The obvious hint is that it involves Wolverine. The least obvious hint is actually pretty normal but no one is thinking about it, if I'm right that is. If Q wants, I can PM him and he can pretty much confirm my prediction then sign an oath in salt to keep it secret until Wong chooses to reveal it.

I could be mistaken, but I think Justin tweeted that it did in fact involve Wolverine.

Like I said I am still excited for Tekken 7 but the trailer didn't do much for me.

What I got from that trailer:

*Bad English voice actress of the woman who plays Kaz's mother. This also confirms that the story will focus on her and how Kaz inherited the demon gene from her.

*The 7 logo looks hella WIP right now.

*Kazuya and Heihachi will be in the game (SHOCKER!)

I might have been more hyped if I still cared about Tekken's story.

Yeah, I acknowledge the terrible reveal. But it's TEKKEN 7. My personal favorite fighting game series is getting a sequel and I'm REEEEEADY FOOOOOR IT.

As much as I love TTT2, I'm definitely ready to go back to 1v1 play.

I didn't get excited over that trailer either.

I'm just saying it revealed some of the new gameplay mechanics the game would have (interactables, running).

Of course, it was also filled with fancy looking choreography that made a bunch of people think the game would have a DoA counter system...

If you like the game that's fine. I'm not trying to say I'm right and you're wrong. But comparing it to 3S is a little much.

Not at all, to me 3rd Strike is awesome because of all the stuff and "gimmicks" you can do in it. Look on youtube and there is tons of hype to be found be through Urien's Aegis combos, Makoto's stun combos, Oro's unblockables, all the parry craziness and more.

KOFXIII is the same since there is so much that can be done. You have your stun combos, anywhere juggles, drive cancels (which allow you to combo from a ton of different situations), Chin's very unique and highly damaging play style, Hwa Jai's drinking shenanigans, Iori's rekka cancels, Benimaru's lightning loops, Yuri and Athen's butt loops, Vice's anywhere juggle focused play style and more. You also have your HD combos but its not limited to just your usual activations but you have HD bypass, air and instant air activations, jump recovery activations, anywhere juggle Neomaxes etc.

To me XIII is a game ppl can learn and discover tech in for years to come, just like 3rd Strike.

MKX revealed gameplay details with a CG trailer.

9a2wo.gif

I was completely taken aback with people's reactions to this because soooooo many people in that thread were thinking it's in-game real-time gameplay.......when it was so damn clearly CG.

But regardless of that MKX sounds really exciting because of the new characters and I'm anticipating it as long as they can move past that clunky gameplay I don't like.

I heard about it briefly. You're wrong as far as I can tell.

There was only one thing I didn't like about any of the Finals on Sunday, and it was the volume being a bit too loud. Other than that, everything was great.

So you mean to tell me he doesn't helm breaker enough?
Dark Vergil is a very different character than regular point Vergil.

Point Vergil focuses more on spending bar for Spiral Sword and has to apply actual pressure, mix ups and play footsies. You don't spend bar on Devil Trigger as it's not that optimum so that means you have to be careful about placing your normals. You also don't go crazy with Rapid Slash mix ups as they can be reacted to and punished if you don't use with an assist or with meter.

Dark Vergil spends bar on Dimension Slash, X Factors then turns on Devil Trigger and goes YOLO 420 HAM CHEESE CROISSANT. That means spam Rapid Slash, the Shady K mix ups and just press buttons in the person's face or spam Helm Breaker + Teleports against people jump around. He is able to spam Rapid Slash and mash buttons because his speed in XF3 plus whiff limitation removed in DT makes it all safe. You actually don't spend meter on Spiral Swords when you are playing Dark Vergil unless you have like 3-4 bars to work with.

Basically it's the difference between how Clockwork plays Vergil and how PRRog plays Vergil.

Wow, two years ago.

Game's almost done with development, amirite?

This is crazy, that was a great CG trailer and nothing for the game? I'm assuming Capcom right now has about 4-5 games they have not announced whatsoever for some odd reason. I know for a fact Ono is working on something cause of his LinkedIn leak (fake or not). Ono/Niitsuma have to be working on something! Capcom can't expect to milk SFIV anymore than what they have!
I'm waiting to be shown the catalog of SF2 games.

I heard about it briefly. You're wrong as far as I can tell.

Really? It must be gamebreaking then, god damn!

Yeah. It was very noticeable when fireballs were thrown. The bass kicked in like it was a lighting strike or something. Drunk people at my house were like wtf.

Oh and Justin plays every damn character. If you watch his streams, he plays every character in any game he touches. He just has his mains for tournaments or whatever but he seems to play a list of characters at well above average level for kicks ala goofing off on netplay.

Maybe it was the incredibad music? My wife bust out laughing when I showed her the trailer. It was really good until then, though.

A few months (IIRC) after the Darkstalkers trailer, Capcom released a PR statement that they decided to discontinue development on most of their outsourced games, and were going to focus on a few core franchises. As Ono was in Vancouver at the time of this message, and we haven't heard anything about Darkstalkers in a long time, the general assumption is that Darkstalkers got canned among those games. Who knows what Ono has been doing in the meantime.

As always, Ono is a hero for videogames everywhere, and suits kill life.

Wow, did not know this. Even though I've never played a Darkstalkers game before, I was planning to bone 40-60 bucks to buy the game because I really want a new fighter ;_;

Xrd will be that fresh new game once I get a PS4 with a fightstick. Also listening to binaural beats is weird as hell. My head feels funny.

Edit:

Now I'm scared to the point of not wanting to sleep. I hate late night raids on the internet.

Problem with the Tekken 7 announcement is that it's a no shit announcement. Tekken has been a money maker since day one and it would be more surprising if there weren't sequels. So having an announcement about the obvious does no wonders unless you come out big. And they did not.

So what. The storyline is supposed to take place after 6 or between 5 and 6? The series seems to have a thing about characters who are supposed to be dead come back/being alive somehow.

I definitely agree with RagingNight in that modern fighting game design does have a combo "fetish" in that they keep designing their games with ways for longer combos and damage. I would like to see a new KOF scale back on the combos and reward poking and zoning more, like the old games. Yea, I know the old games had some pretty stupid stuff too like glitches and infinites, but for the most part combos were much shorter and each hit relatively did more damage, whereas in 13 if you connect with a lot of single pokes, it can take a while and one combo makes up for a lot of that "hard work". People do get intimidated by learning HD combos (even teaching someone how to drive cancel could be hard for some, even though I tell people just to do it if they want to drive cancel since it only comes out on hit) and I think something like even MAX mode would be easier for people to grasp. If you want a comeback, you can pop max mode and try to land your super, which does high damage and usually better properties like being safer.

I personally like shorter combo games, since it always feels like you go back right into the action and trying to react to what's happening next. Even in games like Vsav, usually people connect with chain combos and try to figure out what to do as a setup after they end it. Even if someone has sick execution like BB Hood dash loops, they usually end it much faster than a lot of modern games.

Major props to Justin Wong. He didn't lose a match set, he broke the Phoenix EVO champion curse, and he made it to the top using day 1 team. Also, its the first EVO victory for a Wolverine team. He certainly earned his title with the death trail of major top players he left behind.

Next year has to be Chris's year though. FChamp, Flocker and JWong have a EVO title now, all we are missing is Chris G.

LOL @ that last Tweet response.

I'm right there with you...except the raids thing. No idea what you're talking about there.

What fighting game doesn't?
Mortal Kombat.

Also, Justin finally became a multi-game Evo champion. 8th time's the charm.

Raises a question I had: Why doesn't the 2vs2 Third Strike tournament that happened in 2009 count? It was run by Evo, not a side-game.

They consider Infiltration/Laugh Evo winners for SFXT teams, so it can't because of teams.

Combined a couple of the ideas people suggested

povdkr.gif

I really hope Street Troller does this in a video.

Since you apparently meant to ask it in this thread...

I've been wanting to ask this, and now seems like a good time to bring it up:
Do you all feel that UMvC3 is a worthy successor to MvC2?

Yeah I do. Marvel 3 is missing some of what made Marvel 2 good, but it hit all the most important points.

Before Mortal Kombat, pretty much every character died at least once or something.
They just had a reboot, they're gonna get back to the usual soon enough.

Heck, watch Liu Kang be the villain in Mortal Kombat X.

Or was that just sarcasm or something.

well those are the reasons why I don't like it. Its not a bad game but its definitely not the best KOF.

Not every game need 50/70% combos and/or wall carry.

I mean outside SF4, what game doesn't have massive damage?
1) BB is full of it
2) P4U is full of it
3) Marvel has TOD
4) Tekken is 50% combos easily.
5) MK9 had 40-50% pending on character
6) Injustice has 40-50% on almost every character in most situations

KI is the iffy one. If you don't go for a combo breaker, the max damage you'll take is about 20-30%. But if you guess wrong on that combo breaker...

In comparison in the past you had games like
1) 3s (only high damage combos were cancel into super
2) CVS2 (outside ratio advanage and lvl 3 super/custom combo/K groove)
3) SC2
4) KOF98
5) GG

You can see a fundamental change in design. There are exceptions such as UMK3 but for the most part, fighting games before did not have high damage consistently. ST of course had high damage that could lead into stun but its not as prevalent as kokonoe doing a 5k combo off of a random hit.

Yup, it's really annoying and why I think that games like BB and Marvel are fundamentally bad games. I almost feel like it turns the game into more of a single player game at times with how much it takes you out of the action.

KOFXIII's long combos I don't mind as much as it's more limited to specific characters(like Chin or hwa when drunk) and HD combos which you'll generally see once per match. It seems like Xrd is the closest newly released fighter that isn't all about turning a game into a combo exhibition and even then I've noticed that combos are longer in that game as well.

Long combos are awesome. TOD is not so awesome.

I would have NO issues with Marvel 3's damage if not for the TAC glitch (and I guess other BS like Firebrand/Skrull).

I'll just ask it here, then:
Do you all feel that UMvC3 is a worthy successor to MvC2?

YES! Blanka secret top tier...

Ultimate was a good try to be honest. Don't know who was the originally lead Game Designer for 2 though. Is he/she still working in the biz? Also by late night raids I mean going maniacal and researching on the internet on some new topic you've found.

Is your real name George by any chance? If not, does Sikachu (tag for IRC) ring a bell? Because you are too familiar to those two that I know.

Eh, I kinda disagree on that for BBCP. The average midscreen BB doesn't do anything like that.
Plus even on defense, there are a lot of decisions you have to make compared to other fighters.

Yeah the combo heavy fetish of recent fighting games has been alarming to say the least. MVC3 is probably the biggest culprit of it and is only alleviated by the fact that you have 3 characters as opposed to one life bar (so a "TOD" is still only taking 33% health plus removing some of your tools).

MVC3 has to be a high damage game though. Characters SHOULD be doing 50-60% damage easily otherwise every game is going to end in a time out. Hell even with TODs there were many games in that top 3 that ended in timeouts.

High damage/long combos shouldn't exist in a 1v1 fighting game.

Would you guys be okay if there was only one x-factor regardless of how many characters you have left? And it's power level is somewhere between 1 or 2. So let just say 1.5?

I still can't get over how stupid x-factor level 3 is.

We hung out, I gave away some secrets I keep to myself about some street fighter related stuff, and I hated on Dieminion for making bad bets.

It was also weird to have people saying OH HEY THAT DUDES NOSTRADAMUS.

But yeah never believe dumb shit stupid fucks say online about the players.

Best moment was running into Seth and having him say "oh I got your badge!" Only for me to tell him I had one already. He looked around and basicly just said "Well I'm about to hit the bar down for a few drinks?" And yeah things only got better from there :D Well besides the fact Seth told everyone we came across that I'm an asshole :D

god damn seems like you had a good time. Next year, gotta hang with Q and Beef to rub shoulders with the best of the best.

SF4 would be a MUCH better game if more characters had a dash like Rose.

*edit*

nvm it's a 19 frame dash which probably just means people need to get more used to dealing with it.

neo_g was the lead combat system designer/planner for every single vs series game including 3 iirc
he also planned vampire savior (ds3), cvs2 and some other shit i dont remember.

capcom fighting jam?

basically most fighting games that have a real good pace/feel by capcom have his name attached to the 'system planning' or something along those lines

edit:

to show how terrible capcom is atm he was last seen working on a fucking mobile game.
though that just might be filler time for him while they work out the details of their next fg (hopefully!)

also,
Vice and Mature

even more proof kof 13 sucks
