Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 10: Against the Odds, We Choose to Hype!

It's amazing how it was acceptable to give a character like Snake such enormous hitboxes that have almost zero startup on moves with such incredible power, but leave Falcon exactly how he was. I have a feeling just as little attention will be paid to him in this game, although I hope I'm wrong.
Snake is heavier than Ganondorf and Samus. How the hell does that work?

yeah everyone wants their favorites of course but im always of the opinion of going at it with i got and try out new things and find more characters franchises i like ( i think i might be the only nintendo only gamer who plays 3rd party games on nintendo systems and have not played a zelda,a metroid,a mario (outside of the classic one) and a few mario karts)

instead ive played pokemon, kirby, fire emblem, and a lot of really weird nintendo franchises...... yeah im weird :T

Yeah, I have my favorites who I want but I don't look at it as "Lucina's in instead of Chibi-Robo," I look at it as "Lucina's in and Chibi-Robo isn't (as far as we know..........)"

I mean, for one, we don't know all the characters yet, we're "almost done" with newcomer videos but considering Robin and Lucina were paired up we could get multiple in one video! You never know! I got hopes, man. It's hard to look at Lucina and go "this vile clone is robbing all my favorite characters of a chance," there's not some magic number of characters who are allowed, you're in or you're not.

It's fun to get hyped and talk about who you want, but it isn't a contest that you lose if a character you don't know or like joins Smash. We still don't know much about this game, but it's enough for me to think it's going to be fun as hell.

Nah, she's of age. What's really strangr is Chrom being totally okay with his best friend banging his daughter
and now the two of them keeping him out of Smash.

I used it in the Miku thread and I'll use it here darn it!

Robin marrying any child character is creepy.

Goes up to eleven in the creep-o-meter scale when you married a first gen wife in one playthrough and then immediately in the next one, you went after your son/daughter.

It's even better if you played Fem Robin and married Chrom in your first playthough, then played Male Robin and Married Lucina in your second

But Robin was a customisable character, including the name, so they probably didn't see the default personality face/name for very long

If they'd said "My Unit" or "Avatar" or something that might've hit better

That's my main problem with having the Generic Fire Emblem: Awakening hero playable. That, plus the fact (s)he's a self-insert character; the game was full of unique characters who'd've been great, like Henry, Vaike, & Gregor, but the little characterization the Avatar gets seems Mary Sue-ish, too.

Even in the trailer, the second Robin shows up, Lucina stops being a badass and starts to fawn over him.
Plus there's the fact he didn't seem to ever get Falcon Punched into oblivion after his entrance; you don't interrupt a Falcon Punch without repercussions.

How does that equate to him looking goofy in the game which was the point you were trying to make?

I can take a shot of any of the characters in any of the previous games to screw with the way they look.
I suppose it doesn't.

That said, it's not the only image of the set that looks weird to me.

Something about his mouth in these images also puts me off. Like, his lips are protruding outward more than they should be. (That or he's doing some kind of open-mouth BRBRBRBRBR, but I highly doubt it.)

Going back to that other image:

screen-3.jpg

The grimace here looks cartoonishly exaggerated. That might be the angle cutting off his lower lip, making it look like that grimace goes down further than it does, but even if it wasn't, I still say it's a little over the top.

I guess it's his mouth I'm taking umbrage with? It's not like it's gonna bother me in motion or anything, though.

Samus is wearing a tank.

She's got her power suit tho

Pretty sure it's deliberate. That's how captain falcon be

I haven't played Awakening, so I can't talk about his characterization, but I think that having the avatar character being playable makes more sense than a unique character. The playable avatar represents the player's take on the story, and, depending on how the series proceeds from here on out, might become a staple thing for Fire Emblem, while singular characters will stay singular characters being within one game (except cameos like Awakening's DLC).
And from what I can tell, he represents both fighter and mage type classes, as opposed to being a singular class, so that's a plus.

The only 2 characters that, in my opinion, capture Fire Emblem more than Robin, are Marth and the shopkeep (Anna?), because they appear in so many games, and in Marth's case, he's the lead of the first game as well.

I don't know if this has been discussed yet as I'm late to this thread, but will the knee of justice return for Cap?

Yeah, things like Snake's tilts had ridiculous hitboxes that made zero sense.

While Capt. Falcon was completely neutered in that aspect.

Captain Falcon had the knee of justice in Brawl, it was just nerfed into the ground and made much harder to sweetspot.

Normally the issue is that women have too large of breast in fighting games.
Now people are having issues with the fact that women have smaller breast covered by somewhat realistic clothing/armor?

....I'm not shocked.

I don't play video game for realism, I play them so I can leer at the women and make stupid jokes. Hur hur hur.

Not really :p

sir, that's an awful lot of semi-colons. :p

Thanks I can add more if you like.

;;;;;;;;;;;;;

Man I really want to enjoy Fire Emblem Awaken as the story and character looks so interesting but the gameplay just lets it down for me.

Make me really sad and hopes that Fire Emblem gets a Fire Emblem Warrior treatment.

What about the gameplay lets it down? In my opinion it is a fine Fire Emblem game, a little different but definitely not bad by any means.

Well IMO there's a huge difficulty gap between Normal/Classic and Hard/Classic, the balancing is worse, reinforcements attacking the same turn they appear feels cheap, the stage design isn't very good, there's not a good variety of win conditions, and I don't like the min-maxing elements. The presentation is great, and I really like the 3D visuals, but the core gameplay was a bit of a letdown to me, to the point where I didn't finish it.

So with the fact we have newcomer clones like Lucina who'd fit in perfectly with the melee clones, do you think we could see more of them back? I can't see young link coming back as Toon Link does his thing and does it better. Roy I feel got screwed by Lucina being a clone of Marth unless they wanted to retweak him to be a clone of Ike.

I could see Dr Mario or Pichu coming back, it would have been very easy to give Mario pills as one of his alternate fire balls, but they didn't. I would still be cool with Pichu as a "joke" bad character who hurts himself.

Dr. Mario seems really obvious for an alt. Just give him the outfit and change his fireballs to pills and you've basically got him back. What I think is really important is to have his name change on the CSS when you select that costume. It makes it feel so much more official and I think if an alt costume is made to actually represent a certain character then it adds a lot to acknowledge that.

In terms of some clones that would be nice to have in a "clone or nothing" situation, K Rool could probably be made into a Bowser clone, Ridley as a Charizard clone, Medusa as a ZSS clone maaaybe and Mewtwo as a Lucario clone.

Obviously I'd prefer all those characters to have their own unique moveset, but if it came down to being a clone or not being in, I think those could work.

Here are my updated roster predictions:

9KInsQ.png

And yes, it all fits on the character select screen.

Also, I have an interesting theory about the remaining Super Smash Bros. newcomer videos.

Since Sakurai said that we're "nearing the bottom of the stash" of newcomer videos, there are probably only a couple videos left. (This doesn't mean there are only a couple newcomers left, because it's very possible that there will be unlockable newcomers that won't get a video so the surprise of unlocking them isn't ruined, and there's always the possibility of multiple newcomers being revealed in a single video, like what just happened with Robin and Lucina.) Anyway, this fits nicely with the two remaining supposed leaked characters: Shulk and Chorus Kids.

Now, the leak, if there's any truth to it, has been proven to not be 100% accurate, as it claimed Chrom would be a newcomer but instead we got Robin and Lucina. However, up until now the leak has been completely accurate, even with completely off-the-wall characters like Wii Fit Trainer, and I believe we can still expect to see Shulk and Chorus Kids. And regardless of the leak, I think Shulk and some kind of Rhythm Heaven character are very likely, anyway. Especially the Rhythm Heaven character, because we've already seen a Rhythm Heaven enemy in the demo of Smash Run.

If we are to assume that Shulk and Chorus Kids (or some Rhythm Heaven character, at least; it could end up being Marshal from Rhythm Heaven Fever) are the last remaining newcomers to get reveal videos (that is to say, they're the last of the newcomers that will be on the starter roster; there may be more that are unlockable that won't get videos), then we should be seeing those videos pretty soon. I'd guess one next month in August, and a final one in September before the game releases in Japan. But what will those videos be like?

If we take what we've seen so far, I think it may be fairly easy to predict what we might get (again, assuming the last pre-release newcomer reveals are Shulk and Chorus Kids or another Rhythm Heaven character). As we've seen, some of the newcomer videos are done in the style of animation that is used in or inspired by the game(s) of the newcomer's origin. Additionally, some of the videos have introduced returning veterans as well (Charizard in Greninja's video and Captain Falcon in Robin and Lucina's video).

Regarding veterans, we're quickly approaching the release date for the Japanese version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, and all of the characters on the starting roster will have to be revealed by then. So who else can we expect to see before then? Well, of the past Smash Bros. starting characters, we're still missing Ice Climbers, Meta Knight, Wario, and Ness or Lucas. Also, if Snake is back, we can expect to see him revealed before the game comes out, too, since third-party characters are always revealed pre-release.

With all that in mind, I think some of the remaining veterans will be revealed in the last couple newcomer videos, and I'm sure they will be paired appropriately. After all, Charizard being revealed alongside Greninja made perfect sense, and I believe Captain Falcon was chosen to be revealed alongside Robin and Lucina because he fits well in the animation style that was used.

The Rhythm Heaven newcomer video is obvious. It HAS to be animated in the style of the Rhythm Heaven games. And since the Rhythm Heaven games use the same style as the WarioWare games...you know where this is going. Yes, Wario will be revealed alongside the Rhythm Heaven character! It makes too much sense, and it would explain why Wario has been oddly absent all this time, much like Captain Falcon. It's because he's being paired with a newcomer that hasn't been revealed yet!

And then there's Shulk. I imagine Shulk's video will use the standard CGI style used in the Villager, Mega Man, Wii Fit Trainer, Rosalina & Luma, Greninja, and Pac-Man videos. But who would he be paired with? I think there are two possible choices. The Monado gives Shulk psychic abilities...and what other characters have psychic abilities? That's right, Ness and Lucas. Right now, Ness remains the last of the original 12 Super Smash Bros. characters (aside from Jigglypuff, who has always been unlockable) to be revealed. Perhaps they'll reveal him alongside Shulk, with the video revolving around their psychic abilities?

Or another option: Snake. A lot of people think that Snake would have been revealed by now if he was returning...but giving him a late reveal provides the perfect set up for a "Kept you waiting, huh?" moment. And for a video...well, picture something like this: A cardboard box lies on the ground. A Metal Gear stomps into the scene. Snake reveals himself from underneath the cardboard box, and confronts the Metal Gear. He manages to evade it and takes it down with his weapons, but another one emerges. But...this one isn't the same. It's not a Metal Gear—it's a Mechon, and Snake's weapons have no effect! Just then, Shulk charges in with the Monado activated, and he topples the Mechon and slices it with the glowing blade. "Behold the power of the Monado!"

So...yeah. Those are my predictions for the remaining Smash Bros. newcomer videos. Let's see how accurate (or not) they turn out to be! After all, my idea for Robin's reveal video was pretty close to what we actually got! Not exact by any means, but close nonetheless! lol
Just had an awesome idea for a newcomer trailer.

The video starts, and we see a wide shot of Arena Ferox from Fire Emblem Awakening, with two figures entering the arena from either side. The camera cuts to a view of the left side, and walking in from the left, we see Chrom. Then the camera cuts to a closeup of the figure on the right, and pans up to reveal Marth. Not a masked Marth, but Marth as he appears in Smash Bros. The two draw their Falchions and prepare to duel. Chrom charges at Marth, and a number of strikes are exchanged, à la the Fire Emblem Awakening Puzzle Swap panel. Instead of Chrom getting a critical hit, however, this time it's Marth. Chrom falls after Marth's blow, and Marth begins to sheath his sword, but he's interrupted by a strike of lightning—it's Elthunder, cast from a cloaked figure behind the fallen Chrom. The cloaked figure lowers their hood and draws their sword.

Robin
Tips the Scales!

Also, while I've got this giant post going, lol, I wanna talk about Lucina. I've noticed that a lot of people are disappointed that Lucina's in the game as a clone of Marth. People think that she could have been more unique and that she's just taking another potential newcomer's spot on the roster. STOP THINKING LIKE THAT! That's not the case here at all.

Sakurai directly compared her to Little Mac's alternate costume and the gender swaps of Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, and Robin. She is effectively like an alternate to Marth, but because she has minor differences in abilities (and because she's actually a separate character from Marth, unlike the gender swaps and such that she's compared to), she gets her own slot on the roster. But that doesn't mean she's taking anyone else's slot!!

The Smash Bros. roster isn't limited by a certain number of "slots." It's limited by how many characters the development team can realistically create and balance in time for the game's release. Lucina, who is effectively on par with other alts like female Villager, male Wii Fit Trainer, and female Robin, doesn't really require much additional work for her character. And because she's nearly identical to Marth with a few differences, balancing her character won't take much more effort, either.

Having her in the game as a low effort Marth clone is better than her being a more unique character from Marth, because that would only be taking up more development resources, and then she really WOULD be taking another potential newcomer's slot. And really, as different as Sakurai could make her from Marth...she still wouldn't be anywhere as unique as Robin, or any other newcomer for that matter, because this is a character that is pretty much based entirely around Marth in the first place. There's no better character to be a Marth clone than Lucina, lol.

So don't think of Lucina as a disappointing clone who's taking the spot of another potential, more unique newcomer. Think of her as a bonus character, an extra. Because that's what she is.
