Have PlayStation Ads Gotten Worse Than Xbox Ads on the New Systems?

Yeah well here is the Canadian store. I just took these shots.

dum dum dummmmmm

no movies at all in the Coming Soon/Games section. maybe Canada is special in yet another way, but that's what I see. I checked in case I was taking crazy pills again

Yeah I just checked Canada store too and there are 0 ads. I guess we have avoided them for now.

So. How many people here are firing up the outrage bus because they saw adverts within the PS Store app?

(key word in the above question is "store")

How about taking a photo of both systems UIs as you boot them up *as they appear* and make that comparison?

Too lazy to go take my own photo, but found this with a quick google search from Microsoft's own site.

See entire right side of image....complete with non-gaming Fast 5 ad.

Edit: My bad on the Man of Steel thing, not a regular user on the system it is my brother's. I primarily use PS4 except for exclusives. On the 360 the ads are pretty prevalent.
I don't think it's fair to complain about the fast 5 ad. You can probably buy fast 5 to watch right on your xbox one. Nothing wrong with promoting content on the console's store.

The 360 was pretty bad with ads, but xbox one is doing it right.

Edit: wow! You can really tell who owns an xbox one and who doesn't know what they're talking about just by reading this thread!

PS4 has zero ads until you enter the store (where you would expect to see new content being displayed), there's nothing among your games on the dashboard. So no, it's not as bad in any shape or form.

I don't know what everyone is arguing over here as it seems pretty simple;

  • On PS4 there are no ads in the main menu - they are in a separate space
  • On PS4 ads are limited to only the store and occasionally "Whats New"
  • Ads on Xbox are part of the main screen and in the store - you see them integrated into menus when you turn your console on
  • Ads are region based, US tends to get more blatant and varying ones from companies other than gaming rather than EU/UK which is soley games/movies.

its not a comparison. It sucks that both the 360 and ps4 has a lot of ads.

This actually happened with the whole Wipeout Hd loading screen ads as well ( we avoided that).

Yay us, I guess.

Point people should take is that stores vary by region so someone in the US who says it's riddled with cross media ads is correct, and someone who says there are no ads can also be correct.

And of course having in-store ads is not nearly as bad as the 360s old approach.

Oh man, I just got a wicked flashback to when I first had my 360. Dat dashboard...

I've got an old, intermittently working launch model 360 (on of the silverdoor ones) that has never been connected to the internet. It still has that dashboard, just without the ads.

As someone who has never used Xbox live, if it is a paid service, why are there still ads?

Stuff like the purge and Taco Bell can't even be purchased in the store. You don't see car ads on the menu at McDonalds.

I agree and Axe body spray too. Marketing can be marketing as long as it: A. Doesn't interfere with the actual game or B. Stays in a remote location away from what the consumer sees when they turn on their console (like a large Taco Bell sign in the background). Steam's aren't bad because you can exit out and mess with the preferences, but on console it's completely different. You want an interface that doesn't scream "buy something" every five minutes.

I don't want them in-game at all, what-so-ever. That's when they sink to a whole new level.

I don't mind PS4; it's like getting your news from a source. You have a feed. The whole ad service like the Vegas strip is a vice in and of itself.

I wouldn't worry about the store. That's where I want it all to go anyway.

My PS4 boots to the What's Up section because I like to see my friends feeds when I login. Sony fills that with fast food, game, movie, and TV ads. So if I took a pic of my PS4 boot screen, you'd see about 7 ads (content and non-content). From a UI perspective, even without the lame ads, it's atrocious. Both Sony and MS need to seriously rethink both their main console UI and their store UIs. In Sony's defense they had a horrendous store UI on PS3. MS had a great one but turned it to shit on Xbox One. Like pretty much everything else that was good on Xbox 360.

*Where* do they have those ads though? (and I'll assume you meant XB1 rather than 360).

I just booted up my PS4 and saw no adverts. Only my app tiles. Sure, I'd like to remove Music Unlimited etc - but there are no adverts on the actual boot UI.

OP made the point that there are too many ads - in the PS Store app. It's not presented to you front and centre in the main UI screen. This is why a comparison should be made on equal experiences - the first thing you see when you boot a console up.

But the thread is about ads in the store why does showing whats on screen when you boot up matter in this case?

How do you do that?

Set it to boot to What's New, specifically?

Also - how are you seeing 7 ads on a screen like this?

Are you confusing ads with activity?

or are you just trolling the thread, which seems most likely?

Does the featured spots on the xbox one have paid for ads of movies in theaters?\
I thought it was just featured content.

No. Just stuff you can buy/view on the console.

Yes. And often some of the icons/"ads" are really just feature announcements or announcements about a new update coming. You won't see ads for food (McDonalds, slim jims, taco bell, etc.) or anything not related to content on the XB1 currently.

I didn't knew that you could alter the boot tile with the PS4. Aren't you getting it mixed up with the PS3's "what's new"/singstar?

honestly, the amount of games I get with ps plus for the little i paid (actually paid less than $40 for a year from BF sale) I don't mind a few ad's.

neither i did it bother me on x1 or 360. as long as it's not coming in the way of my playing my game, like a youtube video, then i don't mind.

MS and Sony gotta make ends meet.

Just took these a minute ago.

Oh. You posted the same screens I did. :) I agree, different stuff. Your original wording made me think you were saying something different.

It looks like the US does indeed get some pretty bad ads even inside the store.

Oh FFS, please tell me how I'm trolling this thread? Because I dared say something negative about the PS4? Jesus. And much like I shot down your claim that I was wrong about my assessment of what's on the store earlier in the thread, allow me to do it again - no I'm not confusing activity with ads. My activity feed is FULL OF ADS mixed in with my and my friends' activity.

This was worse

I felt like I had upgraded a console with the ad-service feature turned on. I haven't had this problem. Not saying MS makes bad products or anything, but this is a much much better example of ads on console. Then again I rarely used XBL. I didn't upgrade until I moved, so it was the transition from launch to when their slim came out.

I know the XMB isn't well received by a crowd, but I've purchased titles much easier and were alluded to sales much quicker than I have ever with XBL with PSN.

I don't want to speak for this guy, but I'm pretty sure he meant 360 when he said 360. The xbox one honestly doesn't have many ads on it. Yes, on the home page there is a featured section which promotes content available in the store, but those are hardly ads. The sorts of ads people don't like are the ones for content outside of the console (like car ads or fast food ads) and you don't see those ads on the home screens ever. I think most people in this thread made it pretty clear that they don't mind promoting content on the console stores, and honestly I really like that one of the first things I see when turning on my xbox one is what's new and cool to get on xbox.

The 360 is pretty terrible though. There's always one of those shitty little ads on the bottom right corner of the home screen.

I actually disagree with you a great deal, but that's what opinions are all about. I can see how you might think it's "busy" but the biggest icons things are dedicated to your stuff/friends. The "ads" (which often are not actually ads, but are rather system announcements) are barely there. The UI needs improvement in areas, for sure, but you're coming off a little hyperbolic.

Yeah I can confirm this as I actually own an xbone. 99% of the time the 'ads' on the home screen are actually things like what's in the upcoming system update or what is in the latest games for gold deal. I barely ever see ads and when I do, they are usually for games. I've never seen an ad on the homescreen that has nothing to do with the content is available on the console (eg. maccas ads and shit).

Funny how people feel the need to comment on things they clearly know nothing about and then proceed to ignore the people that are calling them out on it.

I have no problems with ads for stuff you can buy on the system. I dont even consider it an ad really just a link to new content wether it be game, movie, tv show, or new app. But can any of us really sit here and defend an Slim Jim ad? No matter if its on home screen or store, you still can't purchase it. That is the epitome of an ad to me

I thought it was just featured content.

It's purely featured content, or notifications about system updates/changes to services/GwG updates/etc. Pretty sure I've never seen a paid ad there (those are clearly marked everywhere they appear, which so far is only in the store).

No.

Ads don't even show up on PS4 during normal gaming experience. In the store they are categorized correctly (no movie ads in "games" tab), have an appealing layout, and a very user friendly UI.

I see a friend play Max CoB on X1 and there are fucking ads right there when the game starts up. Before he can access the menu he has to close the giant ads app that pops up.

Dude really lol I can boot up Max right now and record it, nothing you're saying happens. No idea what you're talking about. And lol at the first paragraph.

This looks a lot better to me.

My complaint might be a bit petty, it's just I pass the ad for The Purge like every day and it finally got me going today for some reason.

lol, the next thread will need to be broken down by region since apparently it varies quite heavily. I'm not a big fan of ads either so it's all good.

I think we can atleast agree that neither have ads outside the Store that is intrusive. Which is the thing that matters.

Is there a reason you don't use the Web Store? It's way better and you don't have to deal with ads at all.

The PlayStation Store isn't so bad, but certain aspects of it are terrible.

I remember going into the PS+ section just expecting to see the games that were for download, and all I saw were ads. I figured my PS+ was about to or had lapsed. Nope, not for another year (thanks Christmas sales!)
