Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 10: Against the Odds, We Choose to Hype!

Hey, this makes me wonder:

Since it appears that Lucina's entire sword is "sweet-spotted," meaning she gets maximum power no matter where she hits... What's the benefit of Marth? Will he have even greater power, but only if he hits with the tip? Or will Marth just become something you play well to show off?

My bet:

Marth:
Tip: 18%
Handle: 10%

Lucina:
Entire blade: 14%

So how would you guys rank the top 5 newcomers you're most excited to try out? For me it's probably:

1) Little Mac
2) Rosalina & Luma
3) Pac-Man
4) Robin
5) Mega Man

What is most compelling to me is how interesting a character's moveset & mechanics are, followed by how much I personally like the character. That's more or less the frame of mind I ranked everyone from.

Little Mac's ferocious ground game being balanced by really weak aerials is intriguing to me and the OHKO mechanic bumps him up to the top. I also loved the 2010 Punch Out game and think they've done a great job with all his different costumes.

Rosalina & Luma is a really great addition in my mind because, oddly enough, she is probably the most fleshed out character in the Mario universe, contrary to space-peach accusations. The way that they have not only implemented Luma with her but also tied in the gravity mechanics of the Galaxy games is just brilliant. Overall I think she has the most inventive implementation out of all the new comers, but falls just shy of Little Mac because I've wanted him as a character since before Rosalina existed.

Pac-Man looks to be very well implemented also, and I think Sakurai absolutely nailed the 3D design of Pac-man. Really clever that he transforms into his limbless arcade incarnation for his final smash and seemingly recovery move. The fact that his taunts and move set also include nods to many other 80's games is a nice addition as well. And of course, I love that the ghosts are part of his moveset. Still hoping for a Ms. Pac-Man alt.

Robin reminds me of Golden Axe characters in the way you could build up magic spells, and I love that. The thoron move looks devastating just like it should and frankly I'm really glad we got this highly unique character instead of Chrom as expected. Definitely one of the more mechanically inventive characters in the game without seeming too clunky. I don't have any experience with the FE series, though, so I have no personal connection to the character. It speaks well to how interesting his moveset is that he is still in the top five.

Mega Man is a great addition to the roster and they definitely nailed his 3d design, just as with pac-man. He blends in with the Smash roster much better than Snake ever did and I love how well his moveset ties into actual abilities from the games.

1) Lucina
2) MegaMan
3) Robin
4) Rosalina & Luma
5) Greninja

Lucina
Robin
Palutena
Rosalina
Mega Man

That is the order I will play in on my first day assuming they are all unlocked from the get go.

yea I've been think about that lately. I think Sakurai will find a good balance between the two like Fox and Falco in the past. I wonder though if her Falchion will allow her to perform a meteor down air like Marth.

Top to bottom

Greninja
Mac Baby
Robin
Rosalina
Lucina

Pac-Man
Palutena
Wii Fit Trainer
Villager
Mega Man
Mii

Essentially yeah, shadow can go anywhere he wants. Technically with that power shadow is beyond the fastest, but Sonic the real winner because he runs faster. Winners don't use performance enhancing natural powers or chaos emeralds kids. Sonic was even talking shit to him about it during a Sonic at the Olympic games tie about how that would be cheating.

Also this happened.

This sounds amusingly batshit-insane. If I were more of a comics person I'd probably give it a look.

Oh god, serious discussion of Sonic comics

Think happy thoughts

Is that what you said?

I know you don't mean this to be offensive, but IT HURTS, HEATH, IT HURTS.

Actually, nah. I don't know. Awakening has it's own OT still going strong and that was made before we had an actual series community thread. Since that's the most recent game, that's what we would be talking about, but all of the discussion over that game goes into that OT.

But I mean, hey, the Persona Community thread hasn't had a mainline game since 2008, but it's on its sixth damn thread.

I think it's that the sword has balanced power across the entire sword, rather than having high power in the tip like marth.

Sorry, haha. I will bump it when I actually start playing the game.

Lucina was always someone I thought could work as an alt costume along with some others. With her confirmation I really want those others.

Those were Proto Man, Shadow and Ms. Pac-Man. Each one shares the exact abilities of the characters they would be clones of. They even play the same in their respective games. Obviously you need all three because one third-party character shouldn't get special treatment over others.

What do you guys think of there chances? I would gladly buy them as DLC. They just seem so logically easy to make.

1. Lil Mac - the ground beast
2. Lucina - the nicer,faster Marth
3. Robin - sword/magic play
4. Palutena - looks broken and I like it
5. Greninja - friggin Ninja from the water Village

So how would you guys rank the top 5 newcomers you're most excited to try out? For me it's probably:

I'm likely going to start out as I usually do, with Mario, and then likely Samus, but out of the currently existing newcomers...

1.) Pac-Man
I just love how he has been implemented in this game, with all those shoutouts to old Namco arcade classics, and I believe that he is an absolutely natural fit with the other gaming icons of this game, even though he's not a Nintendo character. He, and all the stuff he does, represent a significant portion of my youth, and thus I am extremely excited, as much as I was excited for Game & Watch, because I used to have/play these games when I was a kid.

2.) Rosalina
I always am a big fan of unique gameplay mechanics, and Rosalina certainly fits the bill. I have the feeling that she also has immense potential to be a top tier character, but will take a long time to be mastered, even by the competitive players of her. Also, Luma is adorable.

3.) Palutena
As above, she just looks incredibly unique, and very fun to play.

4.) Wii Fit Trainer
At first I was surprised as anybody else, but in retrospect, I just slap myself for not thinking of this myself. Wii Fit Trainer is such a perfect representation of what Smash is, she perfectly fits the mold of the characters, and I think she is one of the best additions to the roster so far. Plus she looks hilarious to play as.

5.) Greninja
At first I was a bit miffed over another Pokemon character, but as I've seen more footage of Greninja, I've started to warm up to him a lot more. Plus, I've also started to like the design. I've always been a fan of speedy characters like Sheik and Zero Suit Samus, so I think Greninja just perfectly suits that playstyle.

I'm also excited to try Robin and Mega Man, mind you. The only character I am truly indifferent about is probably Villager.

This sounds amusingly batshit-insane. If I were more of a comics person I'd probably give it a look.

Is that what you said?

Eh, I would advise still giving it a looksee, it went through a reboot boot/purging because of something I wont get into so , you don't really need much. And its going through the games, so there isn't any super lore related details you need right now. Also they are really good, but I ain't gonna force it on ya

Glad to be of service! Here's CF:

Captain Falcon, from the F-Zero series:
  • another winner of the Smash series perfect attendance award
  • very few changes to the character from the last iteration, so players used to playing with the Cap should have no problem picking him up this time around
  • Up Special - Falcon Dive: leaps up and grabs opponent, explodes to deal damage, functions as a grab and thus can strike shielding opponents
  • Neutral Special - Falcon Punch: charges up and unleashes a spectacular punch, very strong but leaves CF wide open, able to change direction and increase power(!) by tilting the stick in the opposite direction right after performing the move
  • Side Smash - Overheat Elbow: unleashes a strong long-range strike, considerably slow wind-up
  • Down Special - Falcon Kick: delivers a flaming kick, strikes diagonally downward when performed in the air
  • Side Special - Falcon Knuckle: dashes forward and uppercuts the opponent, lifts opponent upward when performed on the ground, sends opponents flying downward when performed in the air
  • Final Smash - Blue Falcon: summons his prized F-Zero racecar and slams into opponents directly in front of him

And then Lucina:

Lucina, from Fire Emblem: Awakening:
  • Uses the same techniques as Marth--probably because it's in her blood
  • Attacks do the same amount of damage regardless of which part of her blade strikes the opponent (unlikes Marth's tippers) making her an "easy character for anyone to pick up and use"
  • Just like in FE:A, she puts on and takes off her mask when appearing on stage and when taunting (note: no mention of whether or not you can choose to keep the mask on or off)
  • Side Smash: Slashes downward in front of her, quick and far-reaching and thus easy to use
  • Up Smash: Stabs upward with great force, sends out shockwaves to deal some damage to nearby opponents
  • Up Special - Dolphin Slash: jumps while slashing upward, very quick and thus useful for intercepting opponents approaching from the air
  • Side Special - Marvelous Combination: able to perform combos by pressing the button again after the first strike, slashes vary depending on which direction you tilt the stick in when pressing the button
  • Down Special - Counter: unleashes a counterslash when struck directly after performing the move, highly effective during free-for-alls and just after landing (note: seems to imply that landing lag has been reduced such that you actually can perform moves with relative speed after landing)
  • Neutral Special - Shield Breaker: sharply stabs forward, able to be charged, long-reaching but relatively slow wind-up

Ah, so this confirms tomes will recharge after a certain amount of time then, correct?

It does! All four will reappear after a certain amount of time passes OR when the player "makes a mistake". The latter is linguistically ambiguous (ミスする場合), and I'm not terribly well-versed in JP Smash lingo, so I can only speculate, but my guess is that the player whiffs an attack (i.e. attempts to use an attack with no tome and fails) and then the tome reappears.

NOPE, I mean they can both run fast. If I were to compare shadow to fighting game character, It would probably be wesker. Keep him an assist, unless sakuria randomly decides he really wants shadow in for some very odd reason. He can't even run as fast as sonic.

I'm not very familiar with Marth in Brawl. Can anyone who is, or played him in the demo or something, tell me if any of Lucina's moves sound different? I'm mostly curious about that Up-Smash that creates the shockwave because I'm certain that wasn't in Melee.

Also, looks like Captain Falcon continues to suck. :(

AND LANDING LAG REDUCED!?

I said "lucinaboots," with a "T." Referring to the boots on her legs. The ones I cropped out from her render and posted numerous times over the past few days.

It's not a fear of getting lost, so much as I'm not big on long works of indefinite length. I generally like my stories short and conclusive. Thanks for the info though.

1, Greninja (STRIDER FROG + My favorite XY Pokemon, heck one of my favorite Pokemon in general)
2. Lucina (One of fav characters in Awakening)
3. Robin (I hope that he has an alt more similar to MY Avatar, but he does look like a lot of fun to play as)
4. Mega Man (Supah Fighting Robot)
5. Palutena (She looks like a lot of fun to play as and I loved Uprising)

SANIC COMICS

What issues are those? I was never really into the archie comics, but my interest has risen as of late....I just dont know where to start reading though. Those strips you showed seem interesting and not so teenage love drama show like the few that ive read.

ON TOPIC: Oh man this thread is moving so damn fast. @_@

So how would you guys rank the top 5 newcomers you're most excited to try out? For me it's probably:
5) Villager
The one newcomer I accurately predicted pre-E3, he looks just as wacky and fun as I wanted him to be. Love the implementation of his "pocket" feature and how it ties into his original game's gameplay.

4) Mega Man
It's fucking Mega Man! What needs to be said?

3) Little Mac
Little Mac is the character I wanted in Brawl and never got, so his inclusion feels long overdue. I was worried he may not have the most thrilling move set, but along with the rest of the newcomers he looks to be an interesting and fresh addition to the roster. Also, love that pink hoodie alt!

2) Greninja
As soon as the starters were announced for X / Y, I immediately called Froakie as my starter. Everyone else seemed to love Fennekin in my group of friends, but as the evolutions were revealed it became clear I made the right choice (personally speaking, of course). Love the design (fucking frog ninja, are you kidding me!?) and typing (Water/Dark!) of the character. Doesn't hurt he looks fun as hell in Smash.

1) Robin
For me, it's a combination of having a close connection to the game Robin comes from and loving the idea of a sword wielding mage. After being convinced that the character wasn't going to make it in to seeing the epic reveal trailer, Robin is definitely the character I'm most excited to play as, from a character and gameplay stand point. He's also got a really cool character design; I just love that purple/black robe!

But, in all honesty, all the newcomers are really cool choices.

Top 5 happy that they are in:
1. Mega Man
2. Little Mac
3. Pac-Man
4. Villager
5. Greninja

Top 5 I want to try out:
1. Pac-Man
2. Greninja
3. Robin
4. Wii Fit Trainer
5. Rosalina & Luma

Funny how I have less interest in trying out my two most happy-to-see characters in the game.

My hype for Little Mac and Mega Man is in a completely different league than everything else. Been huge fans since I discovered them on NES and have been wanting them in Smash since before Brawl.

Little Mac's playstyle is totally what I want from a character and I'm pretty confident he will be my main. Love the way he turned out and the 1 hit ko mechanic is just icing on the cake. If anything, I just hope some other punch-out characters make appearances in some form!

And I've just always thought Mega Man was an absolutely rad character. I wish I could find some videos of people playing him well! He seems like a tougher character though so that might not come until after release when we are all used to how he plays

I'm not very familiar with Marth in Brawl. Can anyone who is, or played him in the demo or something, tell me if any of Lucina's moves sound different? I'm mostly curious about that Up-Smash that creates the shockwave because I'm certain that wasn't in Melee.

He stabs upward in his USmash in Brawl too, and the hitbox does extend horizontally a bit beyond his blade, but I don't remember a "shockwave" - it's been a while since I played Brawl tho. That said, every other moves sounds identical to Marth's moveset.

Not sure that "makes a mistake" interpretation is correct, since if simply missing an attack instantly recharged your tomes, it wouldn't be much of a balance.

Thanks for the awesome translation work Masked Man, you're the best

Up Special - Elwind: fires two projectiles almost directly downward and leaps up when performed in the air, doesn't even jump when the tome has expired (note: no news about how it performs on the ground

EEP

My top 5 newcomers:

1. Mega Man (it's adorable, and is fighting to save the world!)

2. Palutena (I'm a huge fan of the dialogues in Uprising, I just wish there was at least one more character from that game)

3. Pac-Man (c'mon, is the freaking pac-man, a fundamental piece of the history of video games)

4. Robin (seems like a really interesting character to play with)

5. Greninja (didn't know it before, since I didn't play Pokémon X/Y, but looks and moves really cool)

NOPE, I mean they can both run fast. If I were to compare shadow to fighting game character, It would probably be wesker. Keep him an assist, unless sakuria randomly decides he really wants shadow in for some very odd reason. He can't even run as fast as sonic.

Wait, he's canonically slower than Sonic? Sorry the only game Sonic he was in I'm familiar with is Sonic Adventure 2. Didn't they play exactly the same, both go Super form and took equal turns to defeat the final boss? I thought they kept them equal but then again I haven't seen Shadow since that era as all the Sonic I have are Colors and Lost World.

1. Greninja (and playing him confirms this, he has an awesome playstyle)
2. Lucina (she's a Marth clone. That is awesome)
3. Rosalina (moveset looks so interesting)
4. Pac Man (it's freaking Pac Man)
5. Palutena (also looks fun to play)

Runner up: Robin, Mii Fighters

Characters that actually look boring and I'm not really interested in: Megaman, Wii Fit Trainer, Villager, Little Mac

Yep, the way those Famitsu pages are phrased makes me think they're gonna basically spoil future POTD updates.

But if we're getting one each week, I guess there's gonna be some seriously juicy updates from Sakurai more commonly.

Glad to be of service! Here's CF:

Captain Falcon, from the F-Zero series:

ARGH
The problem with Brawl Falcon was really that he was identical to Melee Falcon minus the fast-falling.
He had numerous horrible nerfs outside the physics. His knee was made dramatically harder to land and much weaker, his u-air's hitbox was reduced, and he lost the second jump reset with a Falcon Kick.

Shadow is indeed slower. It's not really noticeable unless you play them side-by-side.

Also Shadow needs Jet shoes in order to keep pace with Sonic.

:o
I never knew that. damn. I hope he gets stronger though.
