Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 10: Against the Odds, We Choose to Hype!

Yoshi, much like Wario or the Kongs, is part of the greater Mario franchise, but in Smash Bros., he is identified by his own series. It doesn't matter what you think. Yoshi has been repping his own series in Smash since 64.

You got that wrong sucka! Its the other way around.

If it wasn't for cranky, non of ya'll would be here.

I just read that Famitsu interview and wow! My biggest takeaway is that it seems Sakurai isn't apposed to completely different character alternates. If that's the case please give Ganondorf a Demise alternate pretty please Sakurai!!!!

Also that chart is awesome. Seeing DK and Metroid with only to reps breaks my heart every time I think about it.

Just put it onto teams and let them 2/3 v 1 you, it's what I do.

That's one way, but then they KNOW they only won because they had a huge advantage, which is a shallow victory. It works sometimes, but not always. Giving them more options to keep playing and having fun is always good, though.

nah, he has his own icon in the game.
I would totally be okay if this went away in future smash games. Just move him back to the Mario series, it's fine. He shows up there a lot more than he does in his "own" series.

Plus his own series is populated by characters and enemies that are pretty dominant in the Mario series already. He barely has anything that makes him his own anymore.

Regardless of the validity of the rumors, I think that's a fair possibility.

I have a hard time seeing Yellow Devil being playable though; his animations don't look detailed enough. So maybe it wouldn't be all bosses. Or it would be playable in a very different sense... kinda like Master Hand in Melee, just press this button combo (in this case icon on Gamepad screen) to start this attack pattern.

Would be nice if Ridley gets at least that. Ideally I'd prefer something more akin to Giga Bowser in PM by holding R; ridiculous and oversized characters you can play as, but they're clearly not normal characters or part of normal gameplay.

I'm pretty sure that Yellow Devil is stage hazard like OOT's witches. I'm not saying that it's real but I want to see how people would feel about it and see why Sakurai didn't reveal Ridley yet.

I would rather to see playable bosses over not having them playable.

One would assume it's accurately representing Smash Bros. characters with notable exceptions because Smash Bros. is a game about well-known and generally well-liked Nintendo characters and it kind of makes sense that there's significant overlap with amiibo advertisements.

I think we aren't seeing eye to eye on this. A character like Yoshi appearing in that image doesn't solely imply Smash Bros., because Yoshi will end up getting multiple Amiibos due to appearing in Woolly World, MK8, Mario Party, etc. My point was, that I'm sure that every character in that image will get an Amiibo given that they're flat out advertised. I was speculating what game those characters Amiibos may be for considering that some of them won't be playable in Smash Bros. ... which happens to be the game that is giving a majority of those characters their first Amiibo figure releases.

Lucina's appearance in Smash takes care of her (people previously thought it might imply SMT x FE Amiibos) in addition to the majority of other characters in that image. Of those remaining, Toad is covered by his own game leaving three left.

I was speculating that there will be Amiibo integration for Mario Maker as well as a new Animal Crossing given that Isabelle/Tom Nook/8-bit Mario make no sense in Smash Bros. (and are deconfirmed anyway) Its not a deep insight or anything, I just thought it was interesting to point out.

Too reasonable for this forum.

lol irony.

Alright, I know rumors are more likely to be fake but it could happens tho.

Playable Bosses rumors

Do you think it's possible that it could happens? That's probably why Sakurai haven't really elaborate on Ridley yet because he could save it for Smash Wii U Direct?

I still really think "Stage-Master" would be a great addition, and can see it happen. We haven't heard anything yet about Wii U exclusive modes.

That's probably because there's simply a lot more Mario games than there are Yoshi games. Just a hunch.
That said, the Yoshi games are different enough to warrant Yoshi being representative of his game series, and this has been the case since Smash 64. Yoshi will never be "back to the Mario series" because he never was part of the Mario series when it comes to Smash.

Plus his own series is populated by characters and enemies that are pretty dominant in the Mario series already. He barely has anything that makes him his own anymore.

Well yeah, that's because it's the same shared universe. Link's Awakening also featured several Mario enemies, does that make Zelda a sub-series to Mario as well?

Yeah, that was my biggest takeaway from the interview, too.

You play as Mario (Jumpman) in the first Donkey Kong, I think that is enough to consider the overall series the Mario series.

NAh bruh.

You gotta have conflict, with out that no Donkey Kong. Hell Donkey Kong's name was the only one in the title. They knew what was up, Cranky the OG.

Yoshi started in Mario but he has clearly shaped his own identity since his debut and that is all that matters. That's how Sakurai sees it according to Smash 64's profiles and so it shale be for all eternity.

It doesn't matter how WE imagine what franchises they belong to, or what they SHOULD belong to.

All that matters is what sakurai thinks they belong to. He clearly thinks DK, Yoshi, and Mario are 3 separate series. Let it go!

Didn't Sakurai talk about the Yellow Devil as this new stage boss mechanic in the Direct?

I was thinking of bosses in that definition; stage hazards of boss characters that you can kill for a powerup.
lol irony.
I'll admit, I didn't really read your post it was responding to. I just wanted to quote the old tag (which I'm not even sure I got right). But I think both of you are making sense there.

I don't believe it because of this:

I completely forgot about this. I really hope it does mean we are getting a new Zelda character and a new Metroid character. One new Metroid rep, one new Zelda rep, one or two new DK reps and I would be very happy. Sprinkle some Shulk on top and I will break into a Disney Princess-esque song and dance with all the little animals of the forest.

It's nothing anyone should have to actively let go of either. They are three different series.

Super Mario is the clear winner by now, but I suppose both Zelda and Pokémon will end up tying at five characters. I'd like if Metroid and Donkey Kong had at least one more each (even Star Fox and Kirby had three characters in Brawl), but I don't count on it.

At this point, I'll be surprised if Zelda doesn't get a newcomer. It did have Toon Zelda planned for Brawl, and now it'd be even easier since they wouldn't need a Toon Sheik. Maybe that's the reason we actually got Toon Link revealed so early? Another alternative would be OoT Impa as a Sheik clone, although she could be a costume too, if that last interview is any indication. Or, for fully original movesets, Demise could be the Ganondorf with a sword that Zelda fans ask for.

Heck, if you remember during the E3 2013 developer direct, he mentioned for the 3DS that they were 'looking into ways to utilize' the face that each player has their own screen. Implying he had no solid ideas implemented yet. Now we have smash run, targetting an opponent (by tapping on their icon on the bottom screen), and something else I can't remember...?

Smash Run was shown in the reveal trailer. He just wanted to tease things without announcing them too early.

The idea that Sakurai would include Mewtwo as a playable boss, but not a playable character doesn't sit right. It sounds almost... cruel? to do to fans of him in Melee. Like it required additional work for them to make him a boss and not a character and there doesn't seem to me at least, to be a good reason why they'd make that decision. There are plenty of other "boss" Pokemon to pick from (Red Gyarados, Suicune, Rayquaza, Giratina, etc) to go and pick a requested veteran with an already established moveset they could have just ported, it doesn't sit right.

She had one game.

Wario has several games of two series.

And Yoshi has a series.

Like if they wanna make more peach games, I am down for that. But she only got the one, and she gets her powers from being overly emotional. So that's its own can of worms.

Every character in that game was overly emotional. It was the crux of the story. :P

I have no idea what that segment in the Smash Direct was for other than showing off new trophies, but I don't really buy into there being an ulterior motive.

No worries about it. It's not like I haven't been that way before in some of my posts anyway. ;)

I need this.

Impa really needs to replace sheik at this point. Impa has been in way way way more Zelda games. Having impa be a sheik lucina or a sheik alt skin would be a good way to ween players off of sheik and onto impa for future smash bros titles. She fits the fighting style perfectly and will probably be in future zeldas as well. That, and she *IS* a sheikah!

I was wondering what the significance of the image was until I remembered the "trophy = new characters from those series" thoughts that went wild back then. Hmm, don't know what to think now.

Edit: How about both Sheik AND Impa? Impa's already shown impressive variance in her ability set between Skyward Sword and Hyrule Warriors. It'd be a shame to just saddle her up with Sheik's moveset and it'd also be messed up to lose Sheik.

Everything surrounding Ridley has been completely different to the way Chrom, Waluigi and such have been treated. Their status was revealed nearly instantly, in the same trailer / image as they were first unveiled. I don't think it fits with the way Sakurai has acted thus far to tease Ridley as nothing more than a boss or stage hazard.

I mentioned Chrom because of the odd wording of "No you're day is today!" when he was only a final smash. Still a bit of a tease there.

Ridley is just...odd. Trying way too hard to tease him as a stage hazard, so he's gotta be more right?

It's Sakurai...we can never be too sure.

Am I the only person who feels like playable bosses would be really fun/interesting? As long as it isn't like a barebones MVC3 Galactus mode deal, it could become an extremely fun mode. Then again, maybe I'm biased since I'm one of five and we all play games like Smash and Kart and the idea of a ringleader or special player that gets ragged on by the other four sounds cool.

The issue there is that, at least so far, every boss in Smash has had fairly limited movement. When someone says play with bosses, they aren't talking about playing with Giga Bowser, but playing as the Master Hand - which just stands still and moves for a special attack when the player inputs a command.

I don't think there'd be enough there to hold anyone's attention for long.

Doc as an alt would be so cool though. On one hand I want that leak because of Doc, on the other, I don't because Mewtwo as a boss :(
Haha, that's more or less how I evaluate leaks at this point.

Has Mewtwo and Shulk? I want this to be true, and will focus on any supporting evidence. (Or: too good to be true).

Doesn't? Obviously fake.

The roster is already so good, I don't really care any more. I'd love to see those two, Isaac, Ridley, Takamaru, etc. But if we found out tomorrow that we already know everyone I'd be ok.

(Of course, that's assuming that all vets are back except Snake, Ivy, and Squirtle. I'd hate any other cut.)

I skimmed that famitsu translation of Sakurai's column but man I really don't want to think too much about it until I know it's actually legit. There's some stuff in there that makes me think it might be a fan fabrication but just DON'T KNOW gotta get some real scans of that bit.
