Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 10: Against the Odds, We Choose to Hype!

You cut R.O.B and Pac-Man but include Metal Sonic? Okay.

The question was "ideal" not realistic :P But i'll bite.

Metal Sonic is definitely the biggest stretch but he's completely different to sonic and would be the best 'villain' to represent the franchise since Eggman is pretty much just "i send robots at my problems until they go away" and wouldn't really have a decently functional moveset.

And I cut Pac-Man because I just don't like his inclusion, and R.O.B because I didn't know about him before Brawl and I just don't care about him and to me it was between him and G&W. But I do about Sonic.

So Falco is an Alt for Fox?

You sure a Wolf who looks strangely similar to a certain Fox wouldn't be a better choice?

I like the idea of having a hero and villain from a franchise represented, and Wolf's moveset is radically different in look and feel despite the similarities whereas Falco's was different in function only and looked practically identical.

ETA:
Indeed. Shadow would be much more unique.
Shadow would fight like a Sonic Clone :-/ Metal Sonic can't even turn into a ball and his attacks would be much more energy based rather than just spin and run like Sonic's

Which is weird seeing as those people are the best atthe gagame that he made and still play his game like crazy to this day.

"You like my game because of this reason too much, I'm taking it out"

There's really no reason to believe that he's changing or removing mechanics due to a paltry handful of people.

I think my ideal Dreamland happy thoughts wish with regards to accommodating competitive concerns and balancing that against casual play is that Smash 4 comes with an 'edition select' mode that'd let you toggle between 64, Melee, Brawl, and 4 mechanics. I don't really expect it because I think the logic against it would be that it'd dilute the intended structure of the game (and there would probably be a huge issue of which 'edition' to use), but it'd be kinda cool.

Ya D1 said he's still working with Nintendo last night on his stream. Hopefully something good can come from that.

This is the probably the one sour note in this whole situation. I wish Sakurai would care.

Distresssss said:
Sakurai should care I think. Adding those few thing competitive players want doesn't even effect the casual player base.

To be honest it's weird how he won't cave and just put some of those things in.

Yeah, I was listening to D1 also. It sounded very optimistic.

In addition to D1 saying that he's working behind the scenes, we know that NoA reps at E3 were taking feedback. Neha in the Nintendo Minute said how she's working on a better notification system for local tournaments. Bill Trinen was openly cheering for Hungrybox at Evo on Twitter. JC Rodrigo definitely keeps in touch with the Smash Invitational players to some degree. Additionally, some press like IGN's Jose Otero supports the community as well.

Despite all this though, ultimately Smash 4's acceptance will depend on the mechanics and balance for the game itself. And that's up to Sakurai and decisions made in Japan.

You know what was happening at 2PM (UTC) Monday? Everyone was talking about Smash Bros.

The best time to hog the news is when there's no competition for it.

You don't have to see everything as him not caring about the FGC. In fact can you honestly tell me that you are 100% sure it was his decision to show it at that time.

Something just occurred to me. Why didn't Sakurai show the Monday trailer at EVO? Captain Falcon would have been guaranteed hype.

Showing it at EVO would severely limit the audience, I imagine. Many more people will see the trailer if he just broadcasts it online. Plus it won't get buried in all the other non-Smash stuff that goes on at EVO.

That would be far too complicated.

He removed the ability to L cancel and Wavedash because of the advantage it gave which is preposterous seeing as it didn't make a difference either way. He also added tripping.

I'm not a competitive smash player in the slightest and I would never dream of removing those techniques because players loved them. It makes Mashpotato Samurai seem salty they are playing slightly different than he wants.

One last wallpaper for now. King Koopa himself.

The collective "who are these anime characters?" would have made me do the biggest facepalm ever.

And it was during a weekend, remember that.

Best at the game in no items 1v1s limited to a certain number of stages.

Many people fail to realize that Sakurai makes the game for all the available ways of playing.
Do not give them the clicks.

While that's true, the evo stream also had 100k people watching at any given time. That's not to say those 100k didn't also watch the video on monday, but there is a possibility more people could have seen it during evo.

It's also very true that it may have been quickly forgotten in light of other news, like tekken 7, or just evo talk in general, but I kinda doubt it.

The real reason is probably that nintendo makes its own news when and how it wants and doesn't announce stuff on anyone else's terms except their own anymore, thanks to Nintendo Directs.

That is literally the worst dream roster I have ever seen. Ben Reeves should feel bad. Just... what? That's the dream list of a middle schooler who is 'too cool' for nintendo and only likes 'mature' games :/

That's actually incorrect, the latter was removed because the physics in letter games don't allow it, L-cancelling exists in Brawl, but is an arbitrary button-press. Nothing you're saying actually proves that he did anything to the mechanics with the FGC in mind- it's borderline tin-foil hat.

Those best players are the best in any kind of smash setting. Regardless of L canceling or wavedashing their general smash skill is TIERS above the average player.

Those are just excuses.

Really? It'd be like four options in a submenu or something. I think when the game lets you modify everything from damage modifiers to gravity, it wouldn't look especially out of place.

Definitely don't think it'll happen, but I think it'd be cool.

Wolf fills the rival/villain role and has a far more different moveset compared to Fox/Falco.

I like the idea of having a hero and villain from a franchise represented, and Wolf's moveset is radically different in look and feel despite the similarities whereas Falco's was different in function only and looked practically identical.

If Sakurai can make Lucina be a separate character than I can't see Falco being an alt.

He's been reppin that clone status since Melee.

chances are one of 64, Melee, Brawl modes would be completely broken

...they really aren't. A person who knows how to use items would be better than them in an items match. I don't think you're understanding what I'm saying.

I'm not referring to L-cancelling or wavedashing at all...

yes, assuming the person who knows how to use items is also a serious player that is fundamentally solid in other areas

....but presumably most players are not

That is so hilariously wrong.

Players at that skill level would never let you get items that would win them the game. They would get combod to oblivion. Once you are off the edge of the stage, you are dead.

Those players also know what the items do. They have played smash much more than just about every other group of smasher if not by far the most.

They only remove the items because it adds actual randomness to the game. No one wants a 10k tournament to be decided over who go Groudon in a poke ball.

This theory was busted when we saw with our own eyes how bad some of them were with items.

I would consider myself a solid player with a good grasp on Smash Bros. mechanics and strategies, and I play on all stages with items on. I guess I'm a mythical non-casual but also non-competitive.

I'd lose to a competitive smasher, no doubt. I just don't have the time to play the game to purely get good at it. I'm not putting down people who do, but I don't have time to do the same.

The point is, I don't dedicate sports-level amounts of time to this game, but I play Brawl with my friends at least twice weekly. Smash is fun for me, and I think I'm at least average levels of good. So yes, a middle ground does exist.

This theory was busted when we saw with our own eyes how bad some of them were with items.

yeah, they got destroyed by other pros (that were *gasp* good with items as well)

also keep in mind Smash 4 is a new game, so even then they're not going to get that good at it so quickly

It seems weird how we havent seen many stages, though I guess most of that is due to showing stages for both the 3ds and Wii U versions. At this point I'd really like to see what the DK and Kirby stages are. Hopefully the number of stages in each version isnt affected by having two versions being made.
