Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 10: Against the Odds, We Choose to Hype!

The lack of an Advance Wars representative is kinda baffling.

F-Zero = 7 games and 1 character
Kid Icarus = 3 games and 2 characters

Gotta love good 'ol Sakurai and his favoritism for certain franchises.

Yeah, Smash should just be decided by a panel of people, that'd turn out great.
He goes by who he finds interesting. If he doesn't find Advance Wars particularly interesting, he's not gonna waste time on a moveset for them.

Got anything to back up that claim?

I think sometime around Melee's development Sakurai said he didn't add Dedede Metaknight because he didn't want to show preference towards his own characters. Though I think Subspace and Palutena's whopping 12 completely different moves say otherwise.

I had absolutely no issue with the 3DS circle pad. I was pulling off Marth's B-combo and counter with ease. It felt a lot like Melee, actually. It did take a little time to familiarize myself with the controls but it clicked incredibly fast.

I'd say more similar to Melee, but a good in between of Melee and Brawl. Fast, requires precision strikes and can get smacked around.

Thank you! I'm glad 3DS impressions seem generally good :D

I thought he didn't write the story for the Subspace, though?

I don't think it's that Sakurai shows favor toward his own characters, it's just that he made them and knows how exactly he'd implement them better than a character he didn't create. If that makes any sense.

I just thought if something, it's going to be super weird if Marth never gets an English voice actor now that the 3 (4) other characters in his series have English VA's, especially Lucina. What's so Japanese about Marth that he has to be the only character that only speaks Japanese? It's not like he's never spoken English before, have the localizers never played Shadow Dragon? Just find someone who has a similar voice to the Japanese VA.

Marth moveset + character I actually care about + from a game I actually played and loved = instant main
Minus the 'from a game I actually played' part, that's pretty much my thoughts :3
As someone said before, with Lucina, along with a few of the other newcomers, it's just nice to have a female character who's kind of a badass and not running around in a ballgown or completely encased in sci-fi armour XD

Not to mention characters from an action game are easier to implement than a racing game. ...And Uprising actually sold some copies. Need more context than just number of games in this case.

He never spoke in Shadow Dragon...
Edit: I mean voiced

No disgusting grab too!

I like most of Sakurai's choices, the times he pulls from irrelevant franchises or pure obscurity makes the roster more interesting, and makes people indulge and research on the history of who these weird and new characters are. The impact of character inclusion is actually pretty significant, I'm sure the Earthbound community wouldn't be what it is if it wasn't for Smash 64, the same goes for the demand of Fire Emblem when they introduced Marth and Roy.

I guess they haven't changed it because of tradition.
I knew that was coming but yes, he did.

He didn't.
:P

Playing both Melee and Brawl a ton this week with a friend helped emphasize what I like most out of both of them to me. Melee when we were more awake and wanted a proper match to fight things out was better (though neither of us are remotely competitive, but I think most casual fans are at least vaguely aware of the faster physics and no-tripping even if they're apathetic), Brawl when we were more relaxed and wanted to goof off was way more fun, especially on Wario Ware Inc. with smash balls and assist trophies everywhere.

LUCINA BOOTS APPRECIATION POST

The hype is real, and it's all thanks to the boots.

First a picture you've all seen before:

Look at these boots. There's something about them I find fascinating.

Maybe it's how the heel-hugging back-flap on each shoe rises like a majestic collar sheltering her delicate ankles, and how the deep split on each side baffles the mind with its paradoxical ability to avoid slippage... suggesting, perhaps, that the whole ensemble is one and the same. Then you have the stitches on each shin, which rise from the back to the front in two arcing lines that guide the eye to the well-sculpted kneecaps and fine embroidery on the white slips at the top. From there the linework continues beyond the boots, along the padded sweater-y pants. It's poetry... Poetry in pants.

Now, let's appreciate the boots on a pic-by-pic basis:

In this exhibit, we see Lucina with legs splayed, giving us a side view of her right leg and a front view of her left leg and allowing us to appreciate the tactile solidity that her sturdy boots afford her, while also conveying the aerodynamic posturing made possible by their sleekness. One can imagine the crisp taste of grass stains and early morning dew on her boots, accrued from pounding the turf up and down Windy Hills.

In this exhibit, we see Zelda's Phantom Guardian dazzled by the stunning linework on Lucina's boots, which accentuate the sharp appearance of her legs as they cut through the air with the fury -- and grace -- of impressive fashion sense and immaculate fit. One can practically feel the grit beneath their fingertips as they trace the dust compacted into each boot's heel from the floor of the Coliseum.

In this exhibit, we have three breathtaking beauties: Palutena, Lucina, and Lucina's boots. Note how Lucina's boots are the most glorious of the three, and how from this angle one can better appreciate the sturdy white folds atop each boot, which appear like flower petals blossoming from the shapely kneecaps. One can hear the crisp snap of the folds as they ripple in the winds over Skyloft, their sound evoking that of a flag flown patriotically over one's homeland.

I'd go on, but... *sniff* I need a moment.

Well, he did actually have an English voice long before Meele came out, in the OVA. So I don't think they'll care this time around. Or next time, for that matter.
Edit: Come to think of it, I think that OVA is where they got the Japanese voice actor from.

The whole boots thing is giving me flashbacks to the tower guards who like being stepped on in Phoenix Wright vs Professor Layton XD

Well, if I ever feel the urge to cosplay as Lucina, I know who to ask about the footwear at least :P

But that wasn't Marth. That was Mars - a large, and important difference. Like Ganon and Gannon.

Yuri and Vic are terrible ideas. Marth needs to sound, like, regal. Soft-spoken. You've heard him in Melee and Brawl already, they're either too dorky or too rough around the edges to work for Marth.

I have a question about SSBU.

I just bought a Wii-U and this will be the first Smash game I've ever owned.

I have a Gamecube controller.

Is the Gamecube controller actually better for Smash or do people just use it because that's what they are used to?

Random, I just saw an episode of that new Pac-Man cartoon, and all I can say is that it is an UNHOLY ABOMINATION FROM HELL.

I'm thanking our lucky stars that the Pac-Man in this game is not that demonspawn.

Was it the episode where he gets acne

That scarred me
