Okay! Eiji says GAF is a gated community, so it's okay to fill you in on the more juicy details. You will be happy to hear that there are over 30 playable characters in this game. The remaining newcomers are:

Dampe
I assume he's a grappling character who only uses hook shots? I'm in.

Finally, vindication.

You guys like and trust GameXplain, right? Everyone on their team who played the game said what I did about the game. That it is much, much closer to Brawl and not anywhere near a middle ground between Melee and Brawl like Sakurai claimed it would be. Of course, when I mentioned this everyone jumped on me saying I was insane in the membrane.

I'd like my apology cake to be chocolate, pls.

uh what? Most everyone said that same thing when they played the best buy demo. Myself included. It's Brawl but you generally run and fall (and jump?) faster.

Chrom
Sylux
Fat Mario

All unannounced veterans have been cut.
Marth is in so I could live with this.

I played it, and for the characters I played, it's easily closer to Melee. My guess is people who say Smash 4 is closer to Brawl haven't played Brawl in a while. It's always slower than I remember it being when I play it after a hiatus.

It is a middle ground when you don't consider the advanced movement options of Melee actually. It's things like Wavedashing/landing and L-Cancelling that also add to the speed of melee, but without using those, Smash 4 seems to be a middle ground.

Found this out today the hard way

I mean, I like them quite a bit but they're not the definitive Smash voice for me or anything. I've heard some say it's closer to Brawl, others to Melee. I personally got more of a Brawl vibe, but no way to really know for sure until the game is in our hands for an extended period of time (aka, a month and a half from now).

It is a middle ground when you don't consider the advanced movement options of Melee actually. It's things like Wavedashing/landing and L-Cancelling that also add to the speed of melee, but without using those, Smash 4 seems to be a middle ground. Slightly leaning towards brawl speed-wise

even basic stuff like running speed carrying over into jumps is missing from smash 4, just as it was missing from Brawl. There are a lot of things that make each game what they are from movement options to general speed to recovery options and Smash 4 has basically expanded on what was in Brawl (and removed some things) but has absolutely not gone back and recovered the things Brawl lost coming from melee--edit: well decent hitstun is back, ill give it that.

Are you kidding? Nearly everyone in this thread tore me to shreds for saying that back during E3.

Momentum jumps are missing again? Ugh...

L-Cancelling was intentional. It's even in the smash 64 instructions.

Also, did you know that combos were unintended for street fighter, but later adopted and intentionally put into the games?

I've seen this before and know L-Cancelling was intentional, but I can't seem to find the image now, can you link it?

it's one of those fundamental things that bugged me about brawl. Not because of some competitive reason or anything. It just felt wrong.

It was on the Smash 64 site too but I have no idea if that thing is still up or preserved anywhere.

So the 3DS version comes out Sept. 13 in Japan.

That's just eight weeks from today.

I'm inclined to believe we have at least two more newcomers, since the Gematsu leak has been more right than wrong.

There are also a number of possible veterans:

- Jigglypuff
- Squirtle
- Ivysaur
- Ness
- Lucas
- Falco
- Wolf
- ROB
- Mr. G&W
- Ice Climbers
- Wario
- Meta Knight
- Ganondorf
- Mewtwo
- Snake

If Sakurai plans to pull an MK8 his time around and show most if not all of the characters in advance (it's possible, with Falcon already being shown), then I expect a rapid increase in character reveals.

Eight weeks!

Granted. But it's way closer to Melee if you consider gravity, running speed, attack speed. Smash 64 DI. Combo potential.

If anything, it's probably more so because of how many platformers I've played in my lifetime than fighters why this always felt "wrong" in Brawl.

Edit: Bandanna Dee? What? That's like asking for a Koopa Troopa to be playable. At least Kirby still has Adeline left if you really want a fourth spot character.

Are you kidding? Nearly everyone in this thread tore me to shreds for saying that back during E3.

I remember that, because everyone kept saying "To me, it felt like [X]" and you kept going "I PLAYED IT ALL DAY, I KNOW WHAT IT FEELS LIKE."

And your counter-point a month later is going "These people agree with me, where's my apology!" I've never actually parsed whether or not you're playing a character like Astrolad or Anihawk but I hope for your sake you are or this is kind of sad.

Now I truly hope he doesn't show all the characters before release and just put a Notice when you get all the characters that just says. "You've Unlocked Every Character!?"

As their biggest release of the year, I wouldn't be surprised if they did one for each version.

I think they'll definitely do one for the Wii U version because they're going to need to sell it through to people who already got the 3DS version. Sakurai has mentioned some kind of connectivity between the two versions, so they'll need to showcase that.

Oh yeah, Wii U one for sure. 3DS one could go either way, as I feel the Smash Run showcase in the last Direct gave it a lot of spotlight.

Along with whatever special modes are going to be exclusive to the Wii U version. And they'll probably showcase amiibos even more than they already have

A Direct for the Wii U version would pretty much have to be all about connectivity (and maybe the Wii U exclusive modes,) because all the other game content will be known by that point. I can see them doing a Direct in August with a few more character and stage reveals and another one in October or November (or December if the game releases around 12/21) focusing on connectivity.
