I can go to bed early, it seems.

Trying to teach Pit how to read causes him damage it seems

1) No one guessed the name Mii Fighters. He did.
2) The leaker has never admitted to what his relation to the team was up until he was wrong on Shulk's reveal, at which point he admitted to working for Namco.
3) Believe it or not, last year's biggest Nintendo leak was "my friend tests for Nintendo." I mean, the guy who leaked it was dumb enough that he ruined his friend's life, but yeah.
holy shit what

Kinda related, but part of me wants to think the Star Tropics U guy from last year (who also said a ton of bizarre and obviously wrong Smash stuff) legit had a friend who worked at Nintendo who just wanted to fuck around with him.

It is extremely unlikely that he saw Robin and guessed Shulk. If he had knowledge of Shulk he would know it isn't him by sight.

If it was a written list it would have obviously said Robin.

If he wasn't sure who it was wouldn't you say "blonde guy in robes " instead of a random name ?

Pic of the day. Robin's Nosferatu is the first ability in the Smash Bros. series that recovers your damage as it gives damage to others. The attack becomes even stronger if you strike from behind! Robin doesn't actually use this ability in the original game, but we added that element to make the character unique. Who knows--the ideas we use in this game may contribute to the original series.

It doesn't take Nostradamus to guess " Pokemon from X and Y" which was what the prediction was, wasn't it? Wii Fit trainer was pretty neat though and I'll admit that seems like inside knowledge but it doesn't verify the rest.

Mii Fighters is whatever. Didn't people think Miis were going to be in brawl too? Not that farfetched.

I just don't put that much stock in these "my friend works at Nintendo" style leaks. Its like the kid in the playground telling you about the secret new Pokémon game that's coming out that his dad got from Japan- imaginary bullshit

I think it's pretty clear that the Gematsu leak has/had veracity. This was the original leak posted right here on GAF before the first trailer. All of those came true. Now you could say "anybody could make a good prediction" which is true, but Mega Man and Wii Fit Trainer are pretty out there suggestions that were confirmed like a day after that post. People say things like "Palutena and Pokemon XY character are obvious choices" but that's only in hindsight. I think the Pokemon XY character is a pretty bold guess. I mean Greninja was announced as a Smash character six months after Pokemon XY even came out. Six months ago people right here were arguing whether or not Greninja was even real. Gen III and V never had Smash representatives, so at the time it would be logical to assume Gen VI wouldn't have one, especially that soon. I still think Chorus Men and Shulk will get in, but last week has shown us that it's not 100% and there are still secrets that Sakurai hasn't revealed.

Well he did say he never learned how to read in Uprising ;)

I guess only floor ice cream can recuperate him now =p

Preach, brudda

I thought Lucas' down B recovers and damages.

It doesn't damage though (although combining that+Nosferatu sounds broken in teams).

but he/she totally can, just reclass to Dark Mage!

holy shit what

Kinda related, but part of me wants to think the Star Tropics U guy from last year (who also said a ton of bizarre and obviously wrong Smash stuff) legit had a friend who worked at Nintendo who just wanted to fuck around with him.

Basically some kid had a friend who went to Digipen, where Nintendo was apparently doing testing for X and Y. This kid's friend told him a little about Pokemon X and Y-a few names, about the new type, and that Mewtwo had another form (although oddly he didn't mention Mega Evolutions). So the kid posts how he got his information, who he was, enough to deduce who his friend was, and tells Pokebeach about it. Of course, it leaks, Pokebeach covers it, and yeah.
Now, Nintendo, being able to figure out who the kid's source of (which /vp/ and some other sites were also able to do, so it wasn't hard), managed to figure out who the tester was, and apparently some reprecussions happened though I don't know exactly what those were.
What's hilarious is that, I don't think the kid was supposed to tell anyone about this. But the kid thought it was cool because his parents were rich and would be able to cover the costs of living for his friend. lololololol

bro, Shulk is still getting in
I know, but the timing for posting that image was too good.

I am so god damn paranoid after the Chrom mixup that Sal's source simply got Robin confused for Shulk, though I'm still pretty sure it's just he's either being fed wrong information or is reiterating stuff he saw years ago which is always subject to change.

They clearly aren't 100% right (Rosalina, being completely wrong about the FE newcomers), but 8/11 right characters which involves Wii Fit Trainer, getting Mii's right down to the naming conventions and Villager (which Sakurai had repeatedly said they weren't going to happen) is way too many coincidences for me to think they got lucky.
I think there's still a fair bit going in Shulk's favor, even without Gematsu's leaker having a perfect record to make it all-but-certain.

Sakurai has proven to have an interest in the game, given the tweet of the Monado at a Xenoblade concert, and it's not too illogical to assume that Sakurai gives some preference to games he took an interest in (after all, he was interested in putting in a Fire Emblem: Awakening rep after playing that game through to completion).

Both Adam Howden and Shintaro Asanuma have apparently tweeted that they're working on projects they can't talk about yet; Howden being more conservative with details, but Asanuma letting slip that it's Xenoblade-related (according to people on Smashboards, anyway, do take that with some salt).

Several Monolithsoft representatives have retweeted Smash Bros. announcements - Soraya Saga for the Smash-focused Direct, then Yuichiro Takeda for the Robin/Lucina reveal - which isn't much, but hey, it's smoke, maybe there's a small fire starting there?

The leaker is absolutely adamant about him being in the game, even after his credibility had been tarnished.

I think he's still in. Smashboards apparently christen Shulk as "the Twitter Warrior", which is kinda cute given Tweets are really all he has going for him outside of the leaker. :V

Practically separated at birth.
Ha, that's a pretty good breakdown of why the "maybe Shulk was Robin" thing doesn't quite work, innit?

No watermark, fake.
They release images without the watermarks all the time. I post them every weekday. Hadn't you noticed?

How does this leaker seem to get new info but still be out of the loop on things like Rosalina? If its old info its as good as useless anyway.

He stated the specific name "Mii Fighters" before it was revealed, it'd be TOO good of a guess. This is no "my friend works at Nintendo" style leak. Sal has given 0 information about his source(s) which is how actual leakers do things because otherwise they risk their source getting found out. He just posts info when he receives a email, to the point.

Pokemon X & Y works in his favor because Sakurai stated they had a slot for a pokemon from that game and they choose Greninja based on early designs before they even had a name for it. If Sal's leaker had early info about the roster it explains why they only knew it as X & Y Pokemon, and Why Lucina is missing (Lucina was added late in development, and not initially planned as a fighter)

It doesn't explain why Rosalina and Robin are missing however, but so far the only thing the leaker blatantly got wrong (Aside from timing of character reveals at e3) is that Chrom is not playable and that Shulk was not in Monday's trailer.

Chrom could be explained by
a) Leaker saw Chrom's model, jumped to conclusion (unlikely)

b) Chrom was being worked on early in development and was dropped in favor of Robin (would explain Robin missing, and getting Chrom wrong) although I don't think this one is as likely either since Sakurai's wording in that Famitsu panel doesn't make it sound like Chrom was actually being developed as a fighter at any point (but who knows)

Everything indicates old/not 100% accurate info, which I don't see how it means useless considering this is the only legit leak we've had so far. There's also the sneaky spirit Smash Run which at the very least hints towards a Rhythm Heaven rep (not necessarily Chorus Kids though)

Even if Shulk and Chorus Kids are no shows, I would still consider the source to have been legitimate, just extremely outdated and somewhat inaccurate.

Its like that Pokemon X & Y leak that stated there was a new Fairy Type and correctly stated that it'd be immune to dragon and weak to steel, but inaccurately stated it'd resist psychic.

Actual sources not always get their info 100% right, its just how it is.

The first? As in there's more? Such as leech seed? Ivysaur confirmed?

hmmmmm

I don't think the only options are "100% right" or "Full of shit"

"At least partly right but was clearly working with incomplete information and decided to fill in the gaps himself without making that clear" is where I'm at right now.

Chrom was never in such consideration that someone working for Namco would have gotten him confused for a playable character. At best, the guy saw a Fire Emblem rep, assumed it was Chrom, and decided to run with it. Which is enough to not take the leak as gospel and assume that other characters could be in.

Shulk could be in or he could have gotten Shulk confused for someone else or maybe saw a Shulk AT and decided it was a playable character. Accuracy of the leak does not necessarily mean whether or not he has access to the team, but how accurate the information he receives actually is.

Here's what happened, he knows about some characters in the game, Sakurai annonces a reveal for monday and within the hour a person from monolithsoft retweets it, everyone was nearly 100% sure it was Shulk, the leaker felt confident that it would be shulk and got a lil cocky so he just went ahead and tried to confirm it, sakurai then throws everybody for a loop, there.

Hmm, some of this was in the Famitsu article
"Although Robin doesn’t use dark magic in FE:A, I decided to assign it as his down special. It isn’t the first time I’ve given moves to a character that they don’t use in their respective game in order to capture certain aspects of the original title."

Difference is, Sakurai is in development with close ties to Nintendo etc. and X & Y have been in development for years. We may not have known about it, but he certainly did. It's illogical to assume that just because we didn't know, Sakurai didn't and so it would be illogical for him to include it. If anything, it's more reason to as it shows the game is up to date.

Also, for Gen 3 & 5, there's a reason...there were generations released between it and the next Smash

Gen 1: Feb 1996
Super Smash Bros: January 1999
Gen 2: November 1999
Super Smash Bros. Melee: November 2001
Gen 3: November 2002
Gen 4: September 2006
Super Smash Bros. Brawl: January 2008
Gen 5: September 2010
Gen 6: September 2012
Super Smash Bros for 3DS: September 2013

There was no logical place for Gen 3 and 5 to be represented. If there was a Smash game between them and their next gen, then they would have been, but not now.

Do note that Sakurai has said that he asks The Pokémon Company for what Pokémon to use, and they give it to him. Logic dictates that they knew the game was coming out after X & Y and so gave him Greninja, as well as Mega Lucario and Mega Charizard X, regardless of the fact that it's "too close" to launch.

Incidentally, if it wasn't for Sonic delaying Brawl, it'd have been the same period of release between DP and Brawl, meaning Lucario, many PokéBall Pokémon, the Spear Pillar etc. were all in similar positions to Greninja, Xerneas, Chespin etc., Prism Tower and Kalos Pokémon League,

For whatever it's worth, there was a poster on GameFAQs a month ago who said the Gematsu leak is generally correct but it gets two characters wrong. The poster said that Lucina is in the game over Chrom, and Marshal is in the game over Chorus Kids. I just found that interesting insofar as the Lucina bit wound up true. Now I'm curious to see whether the RH character will be Chorus Kids or Marshal. All we know is an RH character is likely since an RH enemy has since appeared in Smash Run, and so far, all of the enemies in Smash Run are from the series of a playable character (except the Subspace Emissary characters, although the Mii Fighters are represented by the Smash emblem, so one might classify them together).

- Sakurai has already stated that he had three design to choose from, in the early stages of Pokemon X & Y. He happened to choose Greninja. (By luck, happened to be the most popular starter in X & Y.) Hence why it's "Pokemon X & Y" possibly because the frog didn't have a name at the time.
Not that "lucky" when the competitors were a furry bipedal abomination and a giant ball of spikes.

That's mostly what I was basing the roster I posted a few pages ago off, since they went on later to say we'll have 52 characters and 12 playable 'boss' characters, though I'm un-decided if they were legit or not at this point simply because they called out them being wrong about Chrom.

What Nintendo leak last year came from a game tester? I think I missed this story.

Yeah, I suspect the Famitsu article is full of Miiverse updates. We'll probably get another Miiverse update this week explaining Lucina's mask.
