Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 10: Against the Odds, We Choose to Hype!

Exactly its much easier to make a mod of an existing game you can work on whenever you feel like it compared to being told you have to make an all new game that is ready for release on a certain day.

So what you're telling me is that the series go the route of Street Fighter and release balance patches as newer entries.

I kid, I kid

The latest Japan Time Podcast had one of the Project M guys speaking during the post-show. According to him, Mewtwo's animations were all done by basically one guy and he estimated it took around 700 hours to get them right.
Jesus.

Can't argue with the results, though. Mewtwo's movement in Project M is really slick stuff.

Hardwork, dedication and initiative cancels out difficulty. If it wasn't difficult, we'd see tons of well made Smash clones out there, but instead people take the easy way out and cling to the Smash Bros. IP because it's easier to do.

I'm not saying that I think Project M needs to create a game on the scale of Smash Bros. because that's crazy talk, all I'm saying is that if they wanted to, they could do so much more than just mod Brawl.

Well that's your opinion and that's fine.

I just feel that there is so much potential out there to create something cool with the Smash formula that isn't being utilized because fans are stuck recreating and modifying Smash rather than taking it a step further and actually creating something new and unique themselves.

The main reason smash is so good is because of the huge Nintendo influences on the stages and characters. It's basically the ultimate fan game. SASBR tried to do something similar with poor characters, mechanics and stages and it failed.

Making a new game when they can continue working on PM doesn't make any sense.

All you are making me do is get sad that Card Sagas Wars is forever stuck in limbo because its developers just don't know when to stop adding shit.

The characters and stages are why Smash Bros. is successful and beloved, but not at all why it's good. The reason Smash is good is because it has really good gameplay. If Playstation All-Stars had the exact same content that it already has, but also had the exact same gameplay as one of the Smash games, it would be 10x as good as it is now. The reason it failed had nothing to do with them attempting to make a Smash-inspired game. It failed because they weren't up to the task. Some day somebody will be up to the task. The mindset that Smash is the only game of its kind that can exist and be great is the mindset of someone with limited vision.

Making a new game when they can continue working on PM doesn't make any sense.
Yeah, making something that they can proudly call their own creation rather than trying to modify an existing creation makes no sense at all.

Wow. This looks like it will never ever be released.
The thing was announced before Brawl was even released. Blast from the past:

Jb, Project M is more made by people contributing what they want to when they can contribute it. Its so much different from actually creating a game that it'd be nearly impossible for the people involved to all come together to make a completely new game.

Yes, yes I already know this stuff. You guys aren't receiving what I'm trying to communicate.

I'm not saying they can just stop what they're doing and start work on a brand new game at the drop of a hat. I'm saying that they have what it takes.

Wow, that thing brings back so many memories! I still remember when that was being updated in real japan time.

Still reminds me how the hype crashed and burned after though. I'm so scared to get hype for Smash 4 :(

I might not like some of Sakurai's balancing but the guy has an eye for detail that's just become part of smashes identity.
I loved how he part the mark on Lucina's eye even though he knows that's something that could be completely overlooked because how closely are you really looking at a character's pupils while playing Smash?

On the flip-side, I think people will be looking and if it wasn't there, they would be disappointed.

Fire Emblem most likely. Didn't Sakurai insist on interviewing them for Iwata Asks sessions?

I think Iwata invited him to do it because of his familiarity with the series, and he opened the interview up not by asking for an introduction but by asking about a minor character that appeared in 1 but not in the remake in 3, but then again in 11. It was in jest of course, but that he even knew about about it shows he has a deep level of knowledge of the series.

Sakurai
Hello, I am Sakurai from Sora Limited. I’m sure the reason Iwata-san asked me to do this job has already been explained above. As someone who has never tried this before, getting this task really piqued my interest. Setting aside worries about doing this well, I went to Nintendo’s head office in Kyoto thinking, first of all, just try this out. But, then I thought, the role of “Iwata Asks” is a task that only Iwata-san could do. And try as I might, it would be impossible to imitate the President’s role, so it would be better to ask questions from my own perspective. That said, I’ll be asking lots of detailed questions about Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon. So, Narihiro-san, thank you for meeting me today.

Narihiro
A pleasure, but please go easy on me…

Sakurai
Well, first, may I try asking about Curate Wrys? (laughing)

Narihiro
Ha ha ha! (laughing). Starting out with a question only a die-hard fan would ask.

That may be true but given your other expectation:

I really wonder why the Project M team doesn't just try to create their own Smash clone. That way it can be played at tournaments without the stigma of being a mod.

It's the reason why they should stick with a smash mod instead of making a new fighter if tournament popularity is desired.

Making a modded fighter on an already well known franchise is a much safer route on achieving that goal since Project M gave the community what they wanted: a more competitive smash.

Just look at the story behind Fighting is Magic.
The developers took a well known cartoon show and turned it into a fighting game that almost won EVO's contest in becoming a main entry.

When it was hit with a cease and desist, despite the fact that the developers are now working with one of the show's creators, interest in the new fighting game has dropped like a rock. It has a much lower chance of getting into EVO compared to when they used existing characters from a popular series.

You people are clearly underestimating the amount of work that goes into creating a stable fighting game that features dozens of characters and modes from the ground up. All under a schedule I might add.
I'm only talking about the director (i.e. Sakurai) being replaced here. I'm assuming the rest of the team is all still the same.

I guess Im pretty late for that question, but how are the controls on the 3DS?

Is it only possible to control your character with the controlpad?
Just curious right now :)

Pic of the day. Robin's Nosferatu is the first ability in the Smash Bros. series that recovers your damage as it gives damage to others. The attack becomes even stronger if you strike from behind! Robin doesn't actually use this ability in the original game, but we added that element to make the character unique. Who knows--the ideas we use in this game may contribute to the original series.
The next FE will be of the villains' point of view. Dark magic, dark knights...

Problem is one of his buddies have been eyeing the thread the entire day. I've caught him under the "Users Viewing Thread" banner. Think a couple people (or maybe one person) are running this sham. Can't say anything without being bludgeoned by the people who want to believe it's real.

I checked the thread, but I don't see anything about Bandana Dee and Metaknight being reveal at Comic Con. I hope that it's from same source so we can disproven this rumor this weekend.

I know it's full of shits but fans gotta to be fans

So amazing! Where can I see all of theses?

Smash has made me despise weekends

:lol

Not me. I really need the weekend to take a break from crazy people here. :P

A little bit back I noticed some people worrying a bit about how many stages we might get per game. Despite the sound effects and music that would go along with it I feel like all the energy not going into subspace stages will be enough to get us around 60 brand new stages total between both games. Subspace stages may not equate to a real battle stage but that's what keeps my hopes high.

Also that leaker is goon. Some people are giving him the benefit of the doubt because he is saying all the right things. I mean Ridley, Mewtwo and K Rool? Of course he's going to get some followers. I will say that Lucina and Rayman coincidence are certainly interesting but I'm betting just luck. The people with the least to say have the biggest mouths.

That leaker is obviously fake but whatever.

Where's my red shell return?

It's not coming back. It has been gone ever since Melee.

The leaker clarified after the Robin/Lucina reveal that Shulk is still coming 100%. It wasn't a mixup.

Wii Fit Trainer...

That's all I have to say.

I found it strange that he said Shulk is 100% but not Chorus Kids/Men

I will say that leaks aren't always the most accurate things ever, so it's important you never really repeat them with confidence or try and fill in missing blanks.

There's been a game I've seen a few topics on GAF about within the last few weeks that I've heard people talking about for two+ years but every time someone mentions it, the rumors change. If I had said what I knew two years ago and the game eventually comes out and is different from what I heard (or misheard or misremembered), there'd be a lot of "Well he was clearly making things up, anyway."

I was once told with confidence that three games in long-running series would show up at a conference. IGN even wrote a story with me as the source. Only two of those games showed up, the third was later revealed to have existed but been cancelled, and people still called me a liar. So I just don't leak anymore.

That suck. People should know that development always changed constantly. Shelved, Cancelled, etc so that's why it's pretty hard to keep leaks 100% because the plans are changed constantly. It suck that you got shafted and everyone think you are liar.

Does anyone else think of soap when they see "PSABR?"

I think my mind takes the "ABR," rearranges it as "bar," then the "s" and I see "soap." So "soap bar."

I don't like it. It's clean, but I don't like it.

Uuuuh, nope.

Sad we'll never return to the Electroplankton universe.

Can't wait to see Wii U/3DS's UI stage though. Will we Battle in the Miiverse? Or in Swapnote?

Was Swapnote's remove also the reason Flipnote 3D was never released outside of Japan? I heard they also got rid of online sharing at the same time as closing Swapnote.

Yeah.

Still annoyed by the Swapnote thing. I mean I could go back and use the DSi version, but I wanted to use it on my 3DS.
