Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 10: Against the Odds, We Choose to Hype!

On mobile so I can't whip up a fancy graphic just yet, but here's my ideal roster:

LAUNCH ROSTER (48, 52 with Miis and Random)
Mario - Luigi - Peach - Rosalina - Yoshi - Donkey Kong - Bowser - Wario

Link - Zelda - Sheik - Impa* - Toon Link - Ganondorf - Samus - Anthony Higgs

Fox** - Kirby - King Dedede - Meta Knight - Marth - Lucina - Ike - Robin

Captain Falcon - Ness*** - Pikachu - Charizard - Greninja - Jigglypuff - Mewtwo**** - Pichu Bros.

Pit - Takamaru - Ice Climbers - Mr. Game and Watch - ROB - Wii Fit Trainer - Reckless Player - Marshall*****

Mega Man - Pac-Man - Sonic - Little Mac - Villager - Olimar - Shulk - ??? (buffer slot, no idea who to include as an endgame pick)

Mii Fighters (49-51)

Random (52)

DLC (8 - in order)
Inkling (Splatoon) - Ganon maybe? (not dorf) - Saki (Advance Wars) - Isaac - Wonder Red - Dark Samus - Pokemon Rep (Sceptile) - Snake

PLAYABLE BOSSES (8)
Metal Mario - Ghirahim - Ridley - Pokey (Mother) - Medusa - Giovanni - Dr. Eggman - Dr. Wily

TOTAL: 64 Characters

Playable bosses are, for the most part, glorified modifications to existing bosses or characters. Metal Mario is a beefier Mario, Ghirahim a Link analogue, and Ridley and Pokey are based on their SSE incarnations. Medusa is based on Palutena, Giovanni is based on Pokemon Trainer using a Bowser-like Nidoking, a heavy Ivysaur-style Rhydon, and a Little Mac-style Machamp. Dr. Eggman and Dr. Wily pilot mechs similar to Duon and Galleom's playstyles.

*Impa is a Lucina-style clone for Sheik. While Sheik is more technical and competitive, Impa is more newbie-friendly.

**Fox has Wolf and Falco alts, and gets their Special lineups as custom moves.

***Ness is similar to above with regards to Lucas.

****Mewtwo has a Lucario alt with according Custom Special variations.

*****Marshall is the newcomer and not the Chorus Kids, but Marshall uses the Chorus Kids in certain attacks like how Pac-Man attacks with ghosts or Peach uses Toad.

In other words, it's Make Everyone As Mad As You Possibly Can Because Adulthood Is Nothing But Misery And Compromise And The Original Smash Bros. Audience Is Old Enough To Drown Their Sorrows: The Roster.

On the other hand, if there has to be cuts for whatever reason he's probably up there with Lucas in regards to causing the least fuss.

No he's not. Cutting Falco would cause a fuss, he's an incredibly popular character in Smash and a popular character in his own series.

We're going to have to start thinking about the remaining Melee vets as just as untouchable as the original 64 cast. Because it seems to be that way.

And I'm currently not in a place where I can get my regular avatar. Temporary avatar it is :P

Ah, I remember that thread. What an asshat that VA was...

Oct.3 is German Reunification Day and no one's got to work. So we get the game one day earlier instead here, broken Street Date (like MK8) not even included :P
Based NOE, a few years ago we'd have gotten it Saturday instead :P

Does not compute.

Thanks for the explanation though!

I thought it was crazy that this thread moved so fast. So to put it in perspective, I checked how fast the other threads moved:

We're outpacing the E3 and Smash Direct threads. O.O To be fair, those generally got split between threads though. Still, I'm surprised this thread is ahead. I guess it's from generally good pics of the day and being really close to release.

And just for the sake of it, I made a chart with some of that info. I left out thread 10 since it's not complete yet though.

Edit: Oh, and to clarify details, I just counted the start of the new thread as the '20000' of the previous thread. Most didn't actually hit 20k exactly. Using the start of the new thread made it quicker and easier to avoid random outlier necro bumps too.

Interesting that it's using the Assault Arwing designs despite the fact that we've already seen that Fox uses the N64 Arwing design for his entrance
screen-4.jpg

So that's an interesting bit of incongruity.

If the stage is set across the back of the ship like Sector Z/Corneria one thing to note that will make it very different from those stages is the fact that the Star Fox Assault Great Fox design lacks the long tail section, which is a little hard to make out in today's screenshot.

The jets come right out the back:

So that's different.

I'm glad to see the stage is taken from Star Fox Assault--not necessarily because I like the game (I don't). But because it shows Sakurai is willing to pull from games released prior to Brawl for a stage if a series hasn't had a more recent release. Makes me feel good about a likely F-Zero GX stage.

I wonder how fast thread 11 will be

With how short the backfin is compared to the original, it probably is like Venom's Great Fox stage and takes place on on the wings.

Also, the wings seem to be longer and closer to each other.

If the latter part of Thread 9 hadn't absorbed some of the Robins/Lucina/Falcon reveal posts, T10 might be just about wrapping up now, lol.

I get it's an asset thing, but it really blows my mind how hard they try to differentiate Falco and Fox's movesets and still end up failing.
I always thought that Falco being a semi-clone in the same vein as Luigi made sense. They're both partners and fellow wingman, so having a similar fighting style is fitting. Also, Fox's special moves are meant to imitate the Arwing, so it's natural that Falco does the same. Falco's moves differentiate in ways that match his personality and "birdness".

Agreed. And somehow I even managed to like the entire game. Including ground sections and multiplayer.

1vs1 dogfights on that Space Station map are sooo good. As are the ground sections with four players. I was impressed that you could use the tank and the Arwing in the multiplayer during ground sections, actually. Such a blast to play *_*

I enjoyed the ground sections at first, but they became so tedious later in the game. It still didn't stop it from being my second favorite SF game right below 64/3D though.

Oh I definitely agree. All the fun times I had with the multiplayer completely makes up the shortcomings of the ground sections.

Probably a lot slower. But probably will still pick up at some point; I can't imagine we'll see the end of August without a newcomer trailer.

Thread 12 is going to be ridiculously fast, unless it gets split into separate leak/release threads.

Yeah, but just wait until Ridley is announced at Comic Con!
Oh yeah, there's also the tournament at CC. So that's probably a slight hype generator already.

If every character is going to be revealed before the Japanese 3DS launch (I think they will), they're going to have to start announcing playable characters at a rapid rate, as there's still a bunch of vets to announce and a few more new comer videos.

I still can't tell whether people itt are serious about Ridley being playable. I thought that tease in the Smash Bros. Direct would have killed it.

Well...there's the fact that that there are multiple ridleys sooo...other m Roidley on pyrosphere and regular ridley as playable like the other toon link on spirit tracks.

Honestly, I don't think any character's untouchable outside of icons like Mario and Pikachu. Characters can and will be cut to make room for new ones if there's not enough time to include them all. Any character's going to cause a fuss if they're removed, but characters who share a lot of similarities with another would probably soften the blow since players could have something to fall back on even if they preferred the other. I don't think originating in Melee or 64 really has any bearing on that.

Course, Sakurai's a cool dude and seems to want to bring back literally everyone where possible, so I doubt Falco or Lucas or even Captain Falcondorf are on the chopping block.

This is how I felt. Then I saw the mounting evidence that he is probably playable and swapped back. If he ends up not being playable that will have been a huge troll move by Sakurai.

A post that says Lucario is a Mewtwo clone without any hint of parody should be immolated.

Assault look alt?

but you just changed it?

now I'm confused >_>

That's from a batch of old avatars I made when we got our first official renders. Those are saved on a cloud drive (for some reason). The Palutena avatar I've been sporting since E3 isn't.

So until I get home you'll have to bear with this Marth avatar instead. I'll be able to change my avatar in pretty much exactly 169 minutes. Until then...deal with it :P

Well, If we managed to complete this before any character reveal then OT10 will be FIRST thread to not have any reveals happening during it's span.
