Trails in the Sky: FC on Steam/GOG July 29th

Normally I'd be grumpy as hell when someone wakes me up (it's 3am here), but with an announcement like this, I'll gladly let it pass. Thanks a lot, XSEED! :D

I know I've been harsh on XSEED's trailers in the past, but this one is actually pretty well-done.
The four-screen cut was a bit strange, but yes, it's pretty good, would definitely sell Ys players on the game's premise.

Very satisfied to see a Falcom game coming to GOG. I firmly think that site's the ideal platform for owning digital copies of J-PC games, and I hope future releases get GOG-exclusive bonuses as well. This version of the game looks absolutely gorgeous, too, with the added resolution options. Sara, you're doing amazing work in this world, keep it up! And Tom makes me excited about Falcom games every time he posts, for that matter. (Anyone think of Toonami when they both show up?). I have no choice but to double-dip. There's no reason why this game can't sell well now after Ys' revival.

Ehhh think I'm gonna skip this one, already a little past Chp. 4 on the PSP version unless this version has a save game transfer wizard I can use..

So are there any improvements with the PC version?

Technical improvements - higher resolution/60 FPS.

Content-wise it will be exactly the same as the PSP version once the bestiary is patched in after release. So it's basically a matter of whether you prefer portables or the big screen.

So are there any improvements with the PC version?

The PC version has higher quality graphics than the PSP version (the sprites and textures were reduced in quality for the PSP release), and is 60 FPS on even 10 year old PCs. They're also bringing all of the PSP extras back to the PC version, and adding widescreen support and Steam achievements, etc. so the PC version will be the definitive one for sure.

Started the psp version I got on my Vita like two weeks ago because I was getting impatient waiting for the PC version :P. Will get this on a sale though to show support and get SC on Steam for dem superior graphics.

I've been waiting for this! Already own and have beaten the PSP version, but might as well double dip and replay the game to prepare for SC.

It should be noted that this doesn't necessarily mean the Steam version would have DRM. It's possible to release on Steam without it.
Sounds like it won't be decoupled however due to technical reasons involving the Steam extras. If it didn't have those it'd probably be properly DRM free.

Not really since Steam itself is DRM.

Steam itself is not DRM, but most games on the service do use the DRM. There are some DRM free games available on Steam that you can launch without the client running.

In this case the game does use Steam's DRM though.

http://steam.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_DRM-free_games

This is a list of games available on Steam that do not use any third party DRM (e.g GFWL, Uplay, ...) or the Steamworks CEG ("Custom Executable Generation") component, making them effectively Launcher-free once installed. This means that you can copy the game folder anywhere you want and launch the .exe/.sh directly without being online or having Steam or a third party software running.

I just want to say I approve of the use of this image for the game.

I had this irrational fear that the Japanese PSP cover art would be used, and I don't like that cover.

Absolutely getting it day 1.

Wherever it will be GOG or Steam is all about what free stuff I'll get with the GOG version since Steam sucks at free stuff.

I'm glad they changed the font, since I really dislike the fonts XSEED usually uses in Falcom games, but this one is a little weird in its own right, since it's so small and thin. Still a huge improvement, though.

I think Sendou's referring to having to have the steam client to install games in the first place

But that's no different than running an installer. Edit: Well, okay, it is, since you need an account to buy it - it's more like a combination of a store front and an installer. However, neither of those is optional anyway, no matter where you buy a game.

With GOG, you can always download all the installers, use them, and then keep the final executable after trashing the installers. CEG requires that you keep the Steam application on your system, which can be a turn-off to some. It's just a matter of minutely less storage space, assuming that most active PC gamers are upgrading to TB HDDs anyway.

XiaNaphryz's link explicitely states that the games listed do NOT need CEG.

I know nothing about this game other than it comes close to rivaling persona 4 in terms of jrpg recommendations on Neogaf. I'm pretty excited to buy it on the 29th. I have a vita but I kept hearing the pc version is supposed to be way better way to experience it, so I have been waiting.

I wish it would have come out before last of us remaster day though. Thats like a 50 gb download so I guess I will just install trails first and play that while waiting for my 1 megabyte for second download speed to finish the last of us.

God damn, this game looks gorgeous in HD. I gave up on the PSP version partly because it was so obvious I was playing a game meant for a much higher resolution. Day one for sure.

Been interested in this for a long time, had a PSP but never got around to playing it. So I was just gonna wait for the PC version.

Planning to hook it up to my TV and play it with a gamepad, aww yeah.

GOG? Amazing... I hope that X-SEED gets the Ys games up on there too, eventually. Would be nice to further decouple myself from Steam.

Will there be an OT for the Steam version or will we be bumping the old one?

I do... now. It's a remarkable coincidence, either way. Does that make Hatsuu or SpaceDrake the ship? lol

And for those who don't know what Chaosblade is talking about:

You're going to scare people away by posting that cover :(

Ghostlight also used that cover for the european PSP release.

I don't get it. There's nothing wrong with that cover from what I can see? Is it just a preference for not-quite-silhouettes over the typical super-happy-anime look?

Realizing that I really enjoy Falcom's artstyle in general- I just like their style of anime drawing. Maybe it's just where it seems so 90's.

Oh nice, that is soon. Will buy on both Steam/GOG eventually, but not sure where to get it first. Guess I'll decide after seeing the extras they provide on GOG. Really curious to see how XSEED does with their first release there.

I don't understand why people think even that constitutes as DRM, is it really that different from requiring an account to buy games and using a proprietary installer (that advertises other games the entire way through)? Games that don't require CEG to launch are DRM-free to me. Unless only the Humble Store is the only real DRM-free outlet (for games that are DRM-free of course).

Year of the PC-RPG continues to roll strong.

Glad I'll finally have a chance to play this, I'll probably pick it up from GOG on release to show my support, though I won't have much time to play until fall break.

Wonder if it coming to a new platform (kind of...) qualifies it for GAF's goty vote?

Having never played this, is there an RPG comparable to it in terms of mechanics and/or story?
It's sort of like a middle ground between Lunar and Grandia with a few extra features both games could've stood to use IE specific positioning rather than fully automated movement. Basically you have everyone moving around a field with a limited range of movement per turn and can break attack charge ups, but it's grid based and fully turn based rather than an ATB variant.
What's the problem with that cover? I like it.
Yeah, I'm not really getting it unless it's some sort of anti-anime thing... in which case screenshots will be just as damaging.
