Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 10: Against the Odds, We Choose to Hype!

So I started this long ass post to make a claim as to why Daisy wouldn't have stood a chance at getting in Smash over Rosalina... but it kind of morphed into a more general discussion on Smash 4's roster picks as a whole.

If you wonder why popular fan picks like Waluigi, K. Rool, Takamaru, etc. were all shot down, it is because those characters just weren’t important to Nintendo and their games in the last few years. Like it or not, every newcomer that has been chosen for Smash 4 so far happens to share the same characteristic (another one is that they all make unique fighters) of having recently been put in the spotlight via high profile games in popular franchises. The exceptions to this rule are Mega Man and Pac-Man, but those two being 3rd party characters were chosen more on their relevance to Nintendo history and icon status rather than what they’re doing now.

Starting off we have Villager representing Animal Crossing which is a series that has quickly climbed the ladder to be one of Nintendo’s most popular IP at the moment. New Leaf was a big hit on the 3DS, and its not surprising to see it get a lot of nods here. Mii’s have been popping up everywhere like them or not, and Wii Fit being a hugely popular game makes the Wii Fit Trainer a relevant pick. Greninja, Palutena, (in her current incarnation) Robin, and Lucina are all popular characters that have come from the latest installments in their respective franchises on 3DS. With Little Mac I’m positive that the Wii reboot of Punch-Out!! is most likely to thank for getting him a playable spot on the roster while other classic characters like Takamaru are left out.

Long story short, some characters just aren’t going to make it into the roster if they haven’t done squat in recent Nintendo games. As much as I’d love to see K. Rool become playable in Smash, Dixie Kong will almost assuredly get in first thanks to her appearance in Tropical Freeze. (Although Sakurai may not have been aware of that game while he was planning Smash 4's roster) With F-Zero and Star Fox taking hiatus’ recently, I don’t think anyone will be surprised to see no newcomers from those series either. Coincidentally, rumored newcomers like Shulk and Chorus Men also follow this pattern that other new additions to Smash 4 do.
Mewtwo also is newly relevant thanks to X + Y but I'm trying not to get my hopes up for that one.

For all I know Bubbles from Clu Clu Land could be announced next week and toss my entire line of thinking out the window, but I just found it interesting that the roster seems comprised of characters that became relevant mostly between the end of Brawl's development and the beginning of Smash 4's.
I agree with the premise of your post but I disagree with Takamaru. Hes been showing up recently in Nintendoland, Samurai Warriors 3 and Captain Rainbow. Hardly major roles but Smash has always had a tradition of bringing out classic characters like Ice Climbers, Mr. G&W and Pit for example. King K Rool and Waluigi are not remotely in the same grouping that I'd put Takamaru in. King K Rool and Waluigi are characters in a spinoff series that were created by outside gaming studios that have never had a starring role in a title.

That sentence probably isn't true for every character in or likely to appear in this game (such as Shulk) but I think you understand the point I was trying to make. That is, unless your going to argue that Punch-Out Wii wasn't a deciding factor on Little Mac getting into Smash 4's roster?
I have no idea what the deciding factor was. Ice Climbers got into Melee based on a game from 1985. Little Mac is vastly more popular for his appearance in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out than his appearance in the Wii game, but the Wii game does give him some recent relevance... Just not much.

While it definitely isn't as good as the Wii U version, I don't think it's that bad. Nobody was really expecting it to look as good anyways. Still looks fun though, I'm sure I'll play there plenty because <3 Mega Man

The thing is Megaman should've of gotten a new stage for the 3DS version. Besides Final Destination and Battle Field every character was thought to have a unique stage for each version. But after this who knows.

Sometimes I think it would've been better if Smash stuck to one character per series (except perhaps for its poster-boy Mario), as that would've opened up more possibilities.

Hmmm

That 3DS stage leak had "Wily" as one of it's stages. http://ssb4dojo.com/post/88984765921/rumor-mill-crashandcortexs-leak

May be legit after all, or just a lucky guess

I actually looked at this list, and it's probably fake but man I would love Fourside to come back from Melee. Also Sky Road as Sonic's 3DS stage can work because the level structure in Zone 3 is exactly the same as Windy Hill except there are clouds everywhere so if he wanted to be "lazy" he could do that lol.

People's weren't expecting a Wii U stage to look as good on the 3DS, in fact because they expect that they were expecting a unique 3DS stage.

Just my opinion but I'd save the "these characters all got in for reason(s) X and these characters won't get in for reason(s) Y" type posts until we know the FULL roster. Easy way to avoid making yourself look the fool or see patterns that aren't actually there :P

REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD WANT TAKAMARU

- He's a ninja AND he's a samurai! Not one, or the other. BOTH.
- He's not "just another swordsman." He's a sheath-and-unsheathe fighter -- a unique style!
- He can cast fireballs -- WILL-O-WISP!
- He can cast screen-clearing lightning -- a Final Smash?!
- He can don an invisibility cloak to phase through enemies!
- He can sling shurikens with the best of 'em!
- His game has kick-ass music! Like this and this!
- He'd give us an amazing pagoda stage with sakura petals!
- He'd reinvent a classic character for a new gen, Pit-in-Brawl-style!
- Takamaru had an attraction in Nintendo Land! He cameo'd in Samurai Warriors 3!
- His Famicon game is coming to English-speaking territories! Coincidence??
- He's one of the FAMICON FOUR, along with Link, Pit and Samus

From that list what's...

Chapter 11 (Fire Emblem?)
Endpoint
Jumpusagi
Osohe
Quest
Senjo
Tundra
Vegaspalace (I thought Street Fighter lol)

Now ROB for Brawl, that one's pretty confusing too =P
Not really. Look at Mr. G&W. He also made appearances in other titles such as MKDS, Kirby and I guess in some way you could count Star Fox.
Sometimes I think it would've been better if Smash stuck to one character per series (except perhaps for its poster-boy Mario), as that would've opened up more possibilities.
That'd be a pretty dull roster dominated by generic male characters, tbh. I couldnt imagine smash without Zelda, Peach, and yes even Jigglypuff.

What does a veteran character decided for in Melee have to do with anything? I'm specifically talking about Smash 4.
You're saying "we haven't seen this yet, so it can't happen, even though it happened for previous games."

If you saw Melee's roster without Ice Climbers and Mr. Game and Watch, you would say the same thing. You're seeing restrictions where there are none.

For the record, I made a long essay about how I thought Rosalina had a strong chance of making it into Smash prior to her announcement in SM3DW and Smash. Applying similar logic/pattern to how Sheik was in Smash. :p

I generally agree with you though.

Vegas Palace = Casino Palace from F-Zero GX

Jumpusagi = Rabbit Jump from Rhythm Heaven

Chapter 11 = Reset Bomb Forest from Kid Icarus Uprising

Quest = Presumably the Find Mii stage

Tundra = ...Ice Climbers?

Not sure about the others.

Wut why :(

What a wasted opportunity to give 3DS a unique stage.

Lame Sakurai..

I forget that sarcasm doesn't go over well via text. Figured it made sense with what I quoted lol.
Ice Climber and Kid Icarus aren't important to the history of Nintendo in the same way as the Game and Watch games or ROB add-on, so I'm not sure what you're trying to say.

I still don't really care for Takamaru. His design is boring to me and I don't think we've seen any real reason why he's a realistic contender.

I just went back and played 2 hours of Brawl last night, since it had been years and years and I'm feeling that Smash hype at the moment. It reminded me that I actually have no idea what most people thought about Brawl in general. I've never really seen it discussed online, because the discussion always becomes 'tourney players who love melee vs casuals', which is a conversation I have no interest in, so I don't read it or take part.

I'm a strictly casual player who plays Smash Bros as a party game with friends, and I'd wager most people are. So what did most people make of Brawl? Because honestly, going back to it reminded me that it was just a little disappointing for me.

It's a little bit slow, the visuals are muddy, and there are a TON of bad stages. The newcomers did really little for me in comparison with the newcomers in Melee. Lucario instead of someone like Tetra? Really?

Was there ever a consensus about Brawl? My impression is that people love it, but like I say I've never really talked it out online. Anyway Melee -> 64 -> Brawl for me.

That'd be a pretty dull roster dominated by generic male characters, tbh. I couldnt imagine smash without Zelda, Peach, and yes even Jigglypuff.

But if you took out all the sidekicks and extra characters, you'd have more room for female-led series, and quirkier series too.

Like Samus, Barbara, Jill (as opposed to a Pokemon character), Splatoon girls, Sami...

I'm just using an example to refute Gartooths argument and supporting yours lol.

But I do agree that your examples aren't the same thing, but that wasn't my point.

I'm not saying Takamaru's likely, but if you doubt Sakurai's ability to make a spellcasting ninja-samurai interesting when he made Wii Fit Trainer interesting, I don't know what to tell you!

Hmm, still no Miiverse update.

I wonder if there's more pics to come. Perhaps showing another Wii U -> 3DS Stage?

I never doubt Sakurai's ability to turn characters into fighters (he clearly even underestimated himself by omitting Villager in Brawl). That said in your comparison I'd argue it's more interesting to see Smash translate a character like Wii Fit Trainer rather than Takamaru.

Why am I waiting for the comment to be posted when it's definitely nothing

"Pic of the Day! Dr. Wily's castle makes its appearance in the 3DS version! Some of you might notice that we have changed the color of the sky. Pretty neat, huh?"

Note to mods: NOT the real comment :P

This PotD means Sonic's 3DS stage could very well be Windy Hill, maybe at a different time of day (see Zone 2, sunset to night). Then again, Pac-Man got unique stages for each version, so Sonic has a 50/50 chance. My choices, either Frozen Factory, Sky Road, Silent Forest, Planet Wisp, Starlight Carnival, Tropical Resort, Chemical Plant, Casino Night (or Frozen Factory Zone 3), or Sky Sanctuary.

As for Takamaru, as I've said before, I've given up hope for him getting in beyond DLC, & have resigned myself to only getting Shulk & a Rhythm Heaven character as the remaining newcomers. Would I be cool with Takamaru getting in, sure, but at this point, I just don't see it happening.
