How long before the originally-announced release date for Brawl did they announce a delay? The Japanese release is less than two months away, so if Smash 3DS was being delayed, wouldn't they have announced it already?

Say there was a delay, but it was only a month or so as opposed to being pushed to next year. It's like Brawl's second delay if you think about it.

So less than two months before the original launch of December 3rd for US, and iirc, the Japanese launch was even close to the delay announcement than that.
