I always feel I am so late to these discussions. I don't know whether that's a good thing (because I get a chance to reflect on stuff) or bad thing (since I don't get to join in the discussion at it's most immediate).
Oh well.
The episode is mostly good. The action and strategy was really clever, on both ends.
There has been some debate, I see, over the utility of the rest of the Krew. I'll say this much: they're contributing more this season than they have any other. Mako has the detective skills down, and Bolin is a capable earthbender that pulls through when needed. They aren't 'special' in the same way that the rest of the Gaang were extraordinary pioneers in their respective arts, but I don't think you have to be special in that way to contribute. I think the bigger problem is that they are always following Korra's lead, rather than heading off on their own adventures based on their own personal agency. The reason they do what they do is because it is a Krew problem, not an individual problem of any kind. But whenever they do their own thing, it always either ties back into the main plot or is considered superfluous because of the small episode count. With the way Korra's story is told, it's kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. I would prefer that they develop their own specialized skills, because that would make them more unique, but barring that, this episode does a good job showing how even an ordinary bender can contribute when they are in the right time and place.
Suyin continues to baffle me. As of now, she is possibly the most accomplished person in the entire avatar series or atleast a top contender. And with how efficient, brilliant, and meticulous she is, she somehow missed the glaring and obvious potential danger that having a single judicial power that can operate without any burden of proof or oversight would pose? I mean, this didn't even have to take Mako's detective work to make it happen. Just have another truthteller, put them in seperate rooms, and have them interview the same person seperately. In fact, have more just to be extra sure. If they all have the same conclusion, then that means everyone is on the up and up. Otherwise....well, you get what happened. How does someone that smart make such a boneheaded mistake? The only explanation that actually makes sense is that she is evil, but really, I think the writers just not thinking it through.
And speaking of that incident, why did the Krew's IQ suddenly drop about 50 points when Aiwei came into the room? Okay, so you clearly suspect this guy, then you break into his house and you find out he has a secret room. Now, clearly something is up and your about to find out what....and then he comes in. What do you do? Feebly try to lie, then vaguely try to defuse a potential conflict by saying you think something is wrong, and we're not like accusing you of anything dude, but we were just, you know,....and they just go along with his manipulation. Yes, go ahead, have the probably poisoned tea. Let him go and to his secret lair and make good on his escape route.
Honestly, what were they thinking? They should have told him "we think something is up, and would like to question you." The reasoning is that they may have found something and need him in custody. If he resists, then he basically shows his true colors. If he accepts, as he would if he is innocent because Suyin would make sure the investigation is fair, then you can investigate the house at leisure and find the hidden doorway. Either would be better than letting take control of the room you know, if nothing else, for a fact is secretly designed to covert things of some nature.
Oh, and Korra, why didn't she go into the Avatar State when she couldn't metal bend her way through the wall? I know this isn't some huge important thing like beating children at a race, but it'd have helped, no?
Lastly, as for Suyin's decision to let them go....well, again, maybe she's just evil, but barring that....I guess I just think she has more faith in Korra's abilities as an avatar to deal with this threat. If that is the reasoning, I am siding with Suyin over Lin here. As free agents, they can move more discreetly and, like Korra intelligently (shock, I know) pointed out, they won't be any safer in Rep City if the Z-team has sleeper agents there. Besides that, the avatar isn't a child (well, she kind of is, but you know). She needs to deal with threats herself. Lin is obligated to help the avatar, not babysit her against her will. But if Suyin is sending Korra out to give Zaheer an opening....hm, that bodes badly.
Sure it's popular but there is quite a bit of criticism regarding its writing.
*shrug* Personally, I regard it as very well written for the most part and so do a lot of people from what I've seen.
