Nothing major. Just a ten year dedication to a franchise with sequels every other year and expansions in off years. Just mor of the most ambitious content and production plans in modern games.
Everyone saying where the half a billion is going, the answer is marketing and an ten year investment into the franchise. That's a lot of time and games cost a shit ton of money to make and market.

It outlines their plan for the next ten years, both sequels, expansions and overall product vision for Destiny. Also gives an genuine insight into the business side of the industry (something I think a lot if people should read, since it gives a better understanding of how the industry actually works and is structured)

Yup just now cancelled my £ 54 Digital UK pre-order.
I have already seen 50 % of the planets in the Beta, and the deluxe edition is £ 84 with 2 future DLC - it does not even tell you if that's new planets or just additional story on same maps.
It sounds like in doing 4 or 5 versions and multiplayer maps they stretched themselves In giving us a Borderlands contender.

Not sure. If this were a standard FPS that had 20-25 missions and 15-25 hours of content at launch, people probably would be satisfied. But this is supposed to be more

It costs exactly the same as every other "standard" FPS. Why does this have to be held to a higher standard? Your investment is the same.
I really fail to see how this game is all that ambitious. Pretty much all the content in the beta is extremely shallow. It's very pretty but that's pretty much all the world has going for it. It's far too static, and extremely repetitive.
Most of the people in this thread defending destiny claim that its designed to be played over and over to grind for loot. To me that's just poor design.

There's only 4 planets/moon we know of. Earth, Moon, Venus, Mars. We don't really know if the reef is a zone
So you agree that's it's borderlands lite? Seeing as there's no way the campaign will last 30 hours if we go by 7 missions per planet as indicated by Venus.

No I do not, took me less than 2-3 hours to get to level 8 and see most of Russia and a bit of moon.
Extrapolate that and its looking like half a borderlands standard title.
The thing about borderlands was the sheer amount of maps / enemies and locations, as well as characters.
If you look at Destiny as half a borderlands with multiplayer then its OK, but people wanting a big SP experience are going to be disappointed by 5 maps after all the mega hype.
Its going to get old quick...
I'm not saying the game is short on content. But I was expecting some more locations, so I wonder what they will be saving for future DLC's.

You were certainly right when you told me to prepare to be massively dissapointed when I made the post saying 10 zones was what I considered bare minimum, and 14-15 zones being what I expected.
True. I guess it should be held to a higher standard due to the way Bungie and Activision are positioning the game. This is supposed to be something more than standard.

That is what Bungie were touting though, that apparently this will be the next big thing. They were one step off of calling it FPS WoW. As it stands it's just a FPS with loot.

Sorry, should have clarified. By ambitious I mean in terms of business and franchise proportions, it's rare we see an upfront statement saying that this is the only thing Bungie will publish in the next ten years.
That's what I meant by ambitious, as this game will continue to grow every year with new expansions and sequels for the next decade. That's a long time and an serious, ambitious, investment for all involved parties.
Which is also why I think people need to cool their jets on the hate until we have an better understanding of the scope in the game (which is a continuation of Bungies immense failings in their communications and marketing strategy, they've been far too cagey and unspecific giving far too much room to let rampant negative speculation grow for the past year, they've really handled everything from the reveal to the marketing ramp up really poorly).

Honestly, I am not so sure about whether I will get the game on day one. That is tiny, really makes the solar system feel small and the Moon felt like it could have been any rocky earth area except for the sky box, I hope other areas feel fresh.
How many areas will the full game have then? It can't be 5... They are leaving out a lot of areas they mentioned before, i.e. no Europa?

After the beta the game went from maybe to a no. This news brings that no to a hella no. I was expecting some decent variety in PvE. 4-5 planets is ridiculously bad ,especially if they are all going to be desolate planets with a different coat of paint. If they are able to give new planets or areas in free dlc I might consider grabbing it down the road, but free and Activison.

All I got out of their marketing is that they're presenting Destiny as a social FPS with light MMO elements and a few planets to "explore". It's still just a console FPS from the developers of Halo.
I doubt they'd go all-in on a new IP that's cross-gen.

It's the brevity of the content that is in the zones that has me worried. If the missions were a good 30-60 min long each, i'd have less issue with this, but they are so short and similar, that replaying them has little appeal. Also the fact that the PVP is such a drop in quality compared to Halo, I can see myself not touching it in the final game, which makes this value proposition harder to justify personally. Will keep an open mind though, not going to write it off yet.

Lack of content! LOL! Good one. The game has 4 huge areas, strikes, raids, multiplayer, a story campaign, special events, quests, and who knows what else, but it's lacking content? The amount of stuff packed into the initial release is at least on par with a new WoW expansion.

I put 40 hours into playing pve here, and I wasn't bored. Exploring the areas inside the moon showed just how large the area will be. And there were lots of places sealed off.

The overreactions are pretty amusing to be honest. There's going to be a lot of replay value in the Strikes on the harder difficulties and the raid.
Should be a 100+ hour game unless all you intend on doing is playing it for the story.

bungie really needs to explain the sp element of this game. they focused way to much on pvp with this beta. they need to fix voice chat to the point where proximity chat is available with randoms and make sp a vital focus.

And for all of Bungie's chest beating it's not even an MMO. It's just another sci fi FPS.

I have no doubt this will be a 100 hour game. I got a hundred hours from Titanfall despite numerous people complaining about the length of the game. I expect the same here long after launch because of the disparity between expectation and reality.

I gave an out for Destiny and didn't say that everything could be procedurally generated. Obviously you can't procedurally generated the story. However as far as gameplay and nonstory content, I find nothing exceptional in Destiny. As I pointed out, many of the story elements have the very generic formula of "Kill X enemy" or "Protect this point for X number of waves of enemies". Also note that the story areas were reused.
How is that not the essence of procedurally generated content, but instead of having the exact same enemies in the exact same positions every time it gets randomized? The missions are just corridors, so why not just randomize their layout too. It's not like they followed any logical structure.
The scaling of enemies based on fireteam size is a rather simple matter. I have no idea why you think that would be difficult. The beauty of procedural generation of content is that everything isn't computer generated. At some point you are talking about adding a human generated element. So if you really wanted to hand craft encounters based on fire team size, you simply define different groups of possible encounters for each team size and have the algorithm randomly pick the encounters from the appropriate group.
But in the end, Destiny has some pretty boring generic missions. That could be forgiven if the game came with a lot of content instead to compensate, but it can't even manage to do that. When I look at all the other games coming out this fall, I have to ask myself "Do I really want to be running THE EXACT SAME Destiny strike missions over and over and over and over...again?"
The answer is simple: No!!!

Who said this would be an MMO? Bungie said it wanted to blend certain MMO aspects, such as the Tower which is a hub where players gather to purchase and craft equipment, take on bounties. There's even an interact feature for players to inspect other players, to have them join your Fireteam and all that.
It's just a Sci Fi FPS with loot, light MMO elements and your standard PVP modes.

Oh okay, so the full game that is probably being touted as one of the most ambitious games ever, has the same amount of content as an expansion. Well then, who am I to complain.
Though even that is actually false as fuck. WoW expansion normally launch with 6-7 new zones, all of which are bigger and more open than what we've seen so far from Destiny. 7-9 new dungeons ( 4 strike locations known so far, maybe 6 total if mars have 2 ). 2-3 new raids, again, more than the 1 of Destiny.
Because other areas of the game are severely lacking. The missions are short and shallow, and initially there appears to be very little variety. The locations change but the gameplay stays the same.
The missions have no real start and seem to just fade out. The story appears to be basic at best and seems to mostly be presented through the ghosts poorly voiced narration.
We got a hint of something slightly interesting happening at the end of the moon mission. However I can't see anything interesting come of it becasue all we would be doing is defending old Russia again.
