would be absolutely insane if popeye was in as a character! i'd love it.

who knows? he really is a big part of nintendo's history and he's still very well known. would be the perfect final surprise character to unlock for smash 4.

i have a feeling he might be in...didn't Sakurai say in some interview in the past that he wanted to put him in melee but couldn't? someone wanna clarify this?

Wait what

I'm also part of the "I tried to add everyone but my 3DS list is full" (didn't realize I could scroll, lol), so please PM me to let me know if you added me and I will make sure to add you, too!

You're doing Kami Sakurai's work, sir!

One of the most important things to take from that interview is this:

There has to be a good reason to put them in, and once you think about putting them in, can all aspects of them be executed correctly, even movement.

Yeah, clearly Sakurai puts a ton of thought into determining whether or not a character will work in Smash. Conversely speaking, if he foresees some kind of insurmountable issue in developing the character, then he decides against including them (e.g. Chrom getting scrapped because he would be "just another blue-haired swordsman").

The Famitsu article shows Wii Fit Trainer's customization options for Sun Salutation.

I'll just do a quick rundown of things I noticed:

  • He muses that a number of her/his attacks recover damage because the actions she/he performs are good for your health (lol Sakurai)
  • Up Special - Hula Hoop Dance: mash the button to spin faster and propel yourself higher
  • Side Special - Header: press the button after tossing the ball to do an immediate header
  • Down Special - Deep Breathing: press the button just when the white circle overlaps with the red one to increase knockback and recover damage
  • Neutral Special - Sun Salutation: charge and release to damage opponents, allowing the move to fully charge recovers damage
  • Customization 1 - Propulsion Sun Salutation: slow but hits the opponent multiple times and pushes them away
  • Customization 2 - Concentrated Sun Salutation: grows smaller as you charge the move, stronger that usual but no recovery effect
  • Final Smash - Wii Fit: faces forward and unleashes a ton of hologram-like figures, figures travel far and spread out as they move forward

I don't think it'll happen but I'd love if Popeye made it in. Would never see it coming but it would make sense in retrospective analysis.

Great work as always Masked Man

Shhhhhh, just let it happen.

Regarding the bolded, did the magazine specify if the increase knockback is only for Sun Salutation?

SDCC 3DS winner Larry Lurr did an AMA on Reddit. Bowsercide if old.

Larry said:
Playing it reminds me more of Smash 64, but slower. Air dodging isn't nearly as good as it is in Brawl, so it will allow for a lot more combos because of it. Running is also more like it was in 64 and in Melee.

Getting the red robe makes me feel like the red ranger from power rangers.

There were a few lag spikes that happened , but other then that I didn't feel any lag from playing.

I don't think it's very hard to edge guard. The game is still new to us and we're playing in a tournament match, so we don't want to do anything that's too uncomfortable to us, especially when we could lose a stock if we run out and miss an edge guard.

I and I'm sure a lot of people felt uncomfortable playing on a 3DS and not on a Gamecube controller, Wii remote, Nunchuk, or classic controller. You tend to play a lot safer than usually when you're using something you're not used to using in order to mess up as little as possible.

Read earlier posts. Licensing won't be an issue and he's important to Nintendo's history as one of Nintendo's first arcade games.

Donkey Kong was originally conceived as a Popeye game, but Miyamoto had to retool the game and create original characters due to licensing issues. Popeye was turned into Mario, Bluto became Donkey Kong, and Olive Oyl became Pauline. Without Popeye, there would be no Mario or Donkey Kong — Nintendo would be a much different company today.

Nintendo eventually secured the rights to Popeye, and Miyamoto designed a Popeye arcade game for release in 1982. The NES port was one of three Famicom launch games alongside Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. An edutainment game called Popeye’s English Game was also designed by Miyamoto and released exclusively in Japan in 1983.

Obviously Popeye isn’t going to be included, but I would definitely consider him a historically important retro character.

Apparently our continent has an obsession with the letter S haha.

Some people in this fandom are really salty about others enjoying Brawl's gameplay more than Melee's. It is laughable.

There are just as many, if not more, people salty that melee/64 players don't regard the changes in Brawl as improvements.

Thanks for the info! Regardless, I wouldn't say "isn't" just yet. Sakurai still has surprises for us, and since this is smash where a yoga teacher can be a fighter, anything can happen.

Popeye would be very interesting if he were possible. This hypothetical idea reminded me that company that owns him also owns this...

Let's keep Universal far away from Smash.

It did not! I think it's safe to assume that the increase applies to all of WFT's moves.

I really hope it does since the mechanics would make the move very interesting! Requires you to have good timing to activate it, and you'll have a choice between letting it run out on it's own (which I've seen it happen at E3) or use it early for a powered up Sun Salutation (that restores a bit of health (though it should've been a lot more))

I don't really agree. Large returns on a health recovering move with no clear drawbacks would make any character nearly impossible to KO as long as they have some distance, especially in an FFA setting where it's very easy to gain breathing room. It'd also compound an existing issue in this game where it already seems pretty hard to kill anyone. :lol

That reminds me... What if the Rayman trophy was a sign of something terrible.

They already infested the TMNT Smash Bros. game for the Wii by wasting a bunch of slots.

Please no Sakurai.

Yeah Popeye would be a cool and logical trophy. Of course, even that's not likely to happen.

Who knows, though... they got Rayman...

Maybe I'm reaching, but the Rayman trophy makes me think we'll get trophies for significant 3rd party Nintendo games.

ie: Gimme a Flynn and Agnes Oblige trophy, dangit.

Tyler Durden for SSB4

Final Smash is rocking the house with Marla and making all opponents get too skeeved out to play, muting their televisions as their parents awkwardly shuffle by
