So who's going to take Takamaru's place as the predominantly Japanese newcomer who hasn't had a new game in forever?
...

Prince Sable is the best.

But here's another candidate.

Needs a new game is a lame excuse in a game w/ Ice Climbers. Tons of other franchises are/were dead as well, though they had more than 1 entry.

That said, at least ice climbers have a unique mechanic, where takamaru doesn't seem to have anything too unique - just 'cool stuff.'

Shhh. We just really want a new Takamaru game.

Actually, the Takamaru thing is a bit of a mesh and twisted version of comments Sakruai made in the past.

On the Smash 64 website there was a questionnaire section where people could ask questions or chew Sakurai out. One person asked for Takamaru outright and Sakurai said that the odds of Takamaru getting a new game and appearing in Smash are both low then said (Darn it!).

This really doesn't makes sense to me though, because Sakurai controls who gets into the damn games, though maybe it was different earlier?

Then on the Melee website someone gracefully asked for him to appear to help boost his popularity and support. And another person also asked for a character like Ike (one who uses a huge sword) and then said he would be a bad character cause he might play slow. Sakurai then answered "Takamaru? And then said he doesn't imagine Takamaru playing like that if he was in the game.

There might have been ONE other one, during pre-Brawl where he mentioned the GBA port selling well possibly getting him in (which it didn't I don't think), but other than that that's pretty much all the cases he's been mentioned by Sakurai.

Things do look good for him though for a next game, not so good for other retro characters though. Seems like if you are so dead you aren't getting referenced anymore, you probably have no hope at all.

I think for 64, smash wasn't fully considered a 'sakurai thing,' it wasn't his baby yet. Sure, he made it, but maybe he didn't know if he would be brought back to make the next one. Then he was. By end of melee, beginning of brawl, it was clearly 'this is sakurai's thing, let him do whatever he wants with it.' So now, everything in the game is really up to sakurai's whims. That's not to say other people don't have input, but I'm sure he has power of veto over everything now that it's become so big.

The best part about smash bros for nintendo is that, even if it doesn't sell as well as Mario Kart or Animal crossing, it's a walking and talking commercial for all other nintendo franchises. It can potentially sell OTHER games to people who play it (but don't necessarily buy it). "Aww that villager guy is so cute, what game is he from? Oh cool, that's on 3DS? Sweet I'll buy it" or "Oh wow, that Robin dude is super cool, what game is he from? Wow, I gotta give fire emblem a try!"

Yes! It's surprising how respectfully and effectively this is done. We've seen how it can go bad with something like PSAS. Smash Bros. manages to put into perspective this sense of historical significance for most of the games shown. Even the ones that aren't important, suddenly seem like they are because they made it into Smash Bros.

I know I at least played a lot of other Nintendo games because I was exposed to the characters in Smash 64 and Melee.

Basically everything I came to know and love about Nintendo games and history started with Smash 64 and was augmented by Melee.

Does anyone have a link to Anth0ny's post where he shows off the Smash coin?

HEY! It's the guy who made the thread about Takamaru recently and got us hyped! GET HIM!!!

Ahhh! I preordered the coin from best buy (USA), why they no ship to me? :( :( :(

That said, buying a japanese 3DS is really really tempting. How easy is it to connect to the eshop and use money on it to download smash? What about MH4?

I'd love smash day 1 japanese release.

Now to figure out how to justify it to my girlfriend...

It made me curious who Ness was at least, thought he was a Smash Bros creation until sometime during Melee I found out about Earthbound

Yup, this is totally true. I bought Animal Crossing: New Leaf after watching the Villager in the initial reveal video. I also bought Pikmin 2, Earthbound on Wii U VC, etc. and I'm planning to buy Xenoblade, Punch Out!! and Rhythm Heaven if I can find them.

I remember Chorus Kids being spotted as a Smash Run enemy. Where is this picture?
No Chorus Kids. It was the Sneaky Spirit, who's also from Rhythm Heaven. If it holds true that all enemies in Smash Run are from a series represented by a playable character (even Subspace Emissary, technically, due to Mii Fighters having the Smash logo), then it increases the chances of an RH character such as Chorus Kids or Marshal.

The USA Best Buys have you wait until you pick up your pre-order to get the coin, which for me sorta sucks because it's not a place I feel comfortable driving to and I'd rather not go to that Best Buy again :/

Smashboards now is practically impossible for me to enjoy. Every single micro-topic has its own designated thread on its own designated board and it's really hard to have more than one conversation at once, and replies can come very slowly. Threads are also locked CONSTANTLY. The moderation there is really rigid and controlling with no evident benefit to the quality of conversation.

I know that's not what you were talking about, but I've been meaning to ask what people thought of the current Smashboards community - and if anyone remembers what it was like in 2007.

yeah, that thing, went mods went super rigid and serious, almost to kill threads because people where having fun outside the general discussion, also it helped that most users stoped playing brawl, Link's boards was really good, bunch of awesome and friendly people

then I went into the Project Melee boards but there is much to do there

Same, the one I drove to was an hour+ away AND was totally in the middle of the ghetto. Not sure if it's worth the drive and then the hassle to return it once i get home.

Man, both of them are at the top of my "pipe dream" list.

Both of them would be cool assist trophies, actually. Prince Sable can run around slashing while a bunch of frogs swarm. Ayumi can... investigate... things...?

I would really prefer Marshall over Chorus Kids simply because I'd prefer a character with a name, as stupid as that sounds. I'd just prefer a character with an identity. For some reason I'm okay with Villager and Wii Fit Trainer though. :P

A Rayman stage and music selection would be pretty great, not that I think the trophy leads anywhere like this myself.

If it's anything like in Brawl they'll look at all the awesome Prime 2 locations and decide upon the underground caves from the intro with the ing possessed GF soldiers.
And of course the caverns now have lava.

Speaking of Prime series, Sky Town from Prime 3 is such a perfect setting for a game like this, it's all about those floating platforms.
Frigate Orpheon's not that terrible of a choice... I mean, I'd pick Phendrana Drifts or Tallon Overworld over it, but it's not as terrible as Pyrosphere.

And agreed on Sky Town. Another interesting choice would be Artifact Temple.

OK, super seriously considering japanese 3DS thanks to that anth0ny post.

Few questions:
  1. Can I get on japanese eshop in US? Do I need to do some weird proxy stuff w/ my router?
  2. Can I use my US credit card on japanese eshop?
  3. If not, what's the best way to put money on there? Buy japanese eshop card? How do I do that?
  4. Can japanese smash play w/ NA smash?
  5. Is monster hunter 4 on eshop?
  6. Does monster hunter 4 have online play? Do I need to do weird router stuff to get that to work?
  7. I'm trying to justify my purchase here, so what are some good games a non-japanese-speaking american can enjoy?

Ayumi can
give Smashers coffee that they gleefully accept and then leaves as they pass out.

Melee introduced me to Fire Emblem so it worked out well. Went out pre-ordered Fire Emblem on the GBA.

It works. That sort practice has worked on me numeral times as a kid. I actually got into 3D fighting games because Link was in Soul Calibur. I was already into 2D fighting games but I never took the jump to 3D until Link.

You can probably get answers on this thread:

Sky Town could be a series of platforms moving along the sky rails.

And I wonder what boss character could show up on Artifact Temple.

1. eShop works with no problem.
2. Yes.
4. Depends on what you mean. Locally... probably? I've never had a problem with playing Japanese copies of games vs. US copies of games, though I've only ever tried with DS games. Online should definitely work.
5. Yes, it's on the eShop
6. Yes, it has online play. It should work just fine.
7. Depends on what genres you like.

Discovered F-Zero and Metroid due to Captain Falcon and Samus being in SSB64. And discovered Fire Emblem due to Marth and Roy being in SSBM. Love all of those series now.

These days I guess I know too much to be introduced to franchises through Smash, but there are still plenty of people who don't. Just look at all the "wut" reactions to Robin+Lucina.

So Sakurai is secret santa for gaf?

More like secret Grinch.

EDIT: someone should shop the GAF logo and/or Miiverse logo onto the book.

not trying to be a hipter lol but I knew Fire Emblem because of a magazine, it had a column named "Only in Japan" or something like that, featuring the Fire Emblem with Leif, I liked the designs because animu, and when I saw Marth on melee and I thought he was from the same game lel

now, as for Ness, he was a total stranger to me

Thank you so much.

For question 7, i'm just thinking of easy to play, no reading required, japan exclusive games. Monster hunter and smash are perfect examples, I think. RPGs are out of the question. It's not a huge deal, since the purchase is mainly for smash and early MH4.

The hard part is convincing my girlfriend that playing smash 3 weeks early is worth 100-150 to me :p

Oh yeah, also, are the chargers the same? They usually don't come with one, right? But I have like 6 lying around the house.

First Captain Falcon kills hundreds of Pikmin just to look cool then he kicks Nabbit for no reason.

This is why Nintendo hasn't made a new F-zero game because he's a grade a jerk.
He also invades Arena Ferox to cause chaos, is the reason Chrom isn't in the game and almost Falcon Punches Lucina. Dammit, Falcon.
