It's not like every game with modern Sonic sucks.
I also still don't understand the hate for the design, and probably never will.
.

Eh, me either, while I vastly prefer the classic design, Modern Sonic since 2008 is still better design than most video game characters (and better than most of the Smash roster). Yes a lot of the games are shit, he probably has the worst stretch of games out of all the Smash characters. Lol.

Isn't he in the trailer for Xenoblade Chronicles X?
Yes, Shulk's face (or what is assumed to be Shulk's face; could be someone else entirely) was shown in the teaser (and not in gameplay), but I would imagine that was just a throwback to Xenoblade Chronicles to imply a connection in some way (since the game wasn't given a title at that time).

XB is one of the best games ever published by Nintendo. If Shulk or some other XB rep isn't in, they made a mistake.

I rarely complain about things Nintendo does. Let me have this one damn it.

How exactly does Takamaru being an AT deconfirm Shulk? I've seen a number of people writing Shulk's obituary today, and I don't see the connection.

Smash fans

The logic is that unlike say a rhythm heaven rep where we've at least seen a smash run enemy, we've seen nothing to indicate the xenoblade franchise will be in smash.

Of course if fucking Rayman franchise can get a trophy I think Xenoblade will be in Smash in some capacity

Every newcomer so far has had a stage from their franchise, or some sort of hint that they'd be in the game. Everyone but the original 3, obviously, since picture of the day did not exist before them.

Mario galaxy stage > Rosalina
Boxing Ring > Little mac
Arena Ferox > Lucina/Robin
Galaga/PFlag > Pac-Man
Palutena's Temple > Palutena
Tomodachi/Find Mii > Mii Fighters
Lumiose City > Greninja

We've had absolutely zero content from xenoblade shown off, not even an item. That said, there's still time to reveal more stages and items. Galaxy/Find Mii/Palutena's stage were all shown off later than original trailer and then we had newcomers later.

Doesn't mean it can't happen, though

A lot of those stages were from franchises that already had playable representatives announced though. I think Shulk is a case where showing a Xenoblade stage beforehand would spoil the surprise.

I haven't heard every piece of music in the game, but if I was in the position of choose a tune for the Tomodachi stage this would work well:

Popularity Ranking

Of course one has to remember the beauty of arrangements is they can make any piece of music potentially suitable for a battle to the death.

I wasn't a big XB fan so I'm biased. I honestly didn't think it was a good game. I've been burned out of RPGs nowdays so it probably plays into it.

That said, I don't care if Shulk is in Smash or not but I just have a feeling he won't be.

Also that image of what appears to be Shulk in Xenoblade Chronicles X definitely looks like Shulk.

This could actually have a really sick arrangement that would work for Smash. Throw in some funk guitar and you're set!

Why does Xenoblade get pushed forward more for a rep than say The Last Story? Is it simply because of Project X?

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't Nintendo own Monolith who makes the Xeno series while The Last Story is an IP wholly owned by Mistwalker or whatever Sakaguchi's studio is? The Last Story rep would be a 3rd party character.

I'm fully convinced he's not in.

There is absolutely nothing pointing to him in Smash.

It seems extremely evident Shulk is in the new Xenoblade Chronicles X game and the voice actor secret project is either that or some other random game.
There's a few things that could point to him in Smash (both Adam Howden and Shintarō Asanuma have tweeted that they're doing big projects but can't go into detail, the latter explicitly Xenoblade-related; Monolithsoft employees have been retweeting Smash reveals; the Gematsu leaker - who it should be noted did get a lot correct, Chrom notwithstanding - is downright adamant Shulk is in the game), but nothing concrete, you're correct. However, I think it's more fun to hope all this tangential evidence is actually smoke for a fire we haven't seen yet than dismiss it out of hand.

But hey, y'know, at least you didn't go full-Shahadan.

I'd be very surprised if Nintendo let mistwalker keep the IP.. Nintendo still funded the game's development completely.

Because Xenoblade is infinitely better than The Last Story :P
I quite liked The Last Story's more linear approach (certainly didn't bog things down with endless side quests) and the fact that almost each battle had unique dialogue made battling fun. In some ways I preferred it, but of the two it is the one I've beaten. Will have to wait to give Xeno my final opinion which is going to be hindered by the fact I've put it down so many times.

I know Mistwalker is thirdparty but the game implies that copyright belongs to Nintendo and Iwata is listed as the executive producer.

Xenoblade is getting a sequel and was completely published/developed by Nintendo, The Last Story was published by Xseed for NA and developed by Mistwalker. Now that's not a reason why TLS can't get a rep, but I'd be more inclined to believe Nintendo pushing a Xenoblade character over a TLS character

guys here's my amazing idea for a Smash trailer, also I'm doing it greentext style for some weird reason

>opening shot of US flag at full mast
>figure drops from sky close to it
>shadowy figure flips over in mid-air, quickly revealing it to be Fox McMotherfuckingCloud
>he blasts three bursts of laser fire into the air above him
>laser hit another incoming burst, causing a small explosion
>Fox lands on the ground beneath him on his hands, quickly flipping onto his feet
>camera swings behind him, showing his opponent landing in the distance
>hard zoom into the opponent
>"time to die, Star Fox!" it's Wolf
>two exchange fire for a short amount of time, before getting close and trading blows
>a well-aimed sweep of the leg gives Wolf the advantage, as he grabs Fox and throws him of the side of the battlefield
>Fox grabs edge of the white roof they were fighting on
>as Fox looks back up at the flag, he looks down around him
>camera zooms out
>they're fighting on top of the White House
>Wolf walks over, "Ready to say hi to Papa?" he snarls. His boot clamps down on Fox's fingers
>"you'll have to say hi to me first"
>hand grabs Wolf by his tail, slams into the ground Hulk-style a bunch before punting him away from the edge
>Wolf spits out blood, panting. "Are you one of Pepper's? ...Andross's?!"
>he chuckles
>"I only answer to the president of the U S OF A!"
>CORY BAXTER IS IN THE HOUSE

No new DK stage has been shown for either version, neither Dixie nor K. Rool have been deconfirmed, none of the new items/trophies/Assist Trophies have been from the DK franchise, and green Kritters were literally the first enemies spotted in the Smash Run trailer, yet Nintendo hasn't drawn any attention to them. I find it odd how they showed off the Tiki Buzz during the enemy montage but completely ignored the Kremlings, who are both more recognizable and more prevalent in the aforementioned trailer. I'm starting to think that both Dixie and K. Rool will be revealed together in a future Direct, with Dixie being a Diddy clone similar to how Lucina is a clone of Math. #believe?

> Smash logo appears
> DK and Diddy are seen eating bananas and relaxing on a beach
> A faint image of Bowser's airship can be spotted in the distance, with the traditional music playing in the background
> Bowser is about to order an attack, when suddenly, the Gangplank Galleon music begins playing and cannonballs start raining from the sky
> The trailer breaks away to a shot of King K. Rool and his Kremling Krew cackling on their pirate ship as it heads towards the shore
> *King K. Rool sets sail!*
> K. Rool taunts the defeated Koopa King and announces that "only one overweight lizard is allowed to steal the banana hoard!"
> He grabs his blunderbuss and takes a shot at the kongs, missing narrowly. As a last resort, K. Rool decides to toss his crown at Diddy, not knowing that an angry Dixie Kong is about to arrive
> She bats away the royal projectile with her hair, then proceeds to fire her bubblegum gun with ferocious speed
> *Dixie Kong takes flight!*
> Trailer cuts away to a gameplay montage, then ends with a shot of Bowser, King K. Rool, Dedede, and Ganondorf fighting each other on Gangplank Galleon. Ridley's theme can be heard in the background for literally two seconds before the trailer ends

Man I feel you're REALLY setting yourself up for disappointment LOL

Ah well, we'll see how things shake out

Regarding DLC, I doubt we'll see any of the Assist Trophies, Poké Balls, or bosses as playable characters. Sakurai consciously designed those characters as NPCs for this game -- he seems like a really prudent person, and he probably had the foresight to set aside a group of low priority characters as potential DLC (like Mewtwo and Dixie Kong). Just imagine Brawl's "Forbidden Seven" but on a console that supports DLC.

I'm inclined to agree though once you set aside the playable roster and the assist trophies I feel the number of characters that will cause a significant number of people to say "FUCK YES I WILL PAY $5 TO PLAY AS THAT CHARACTER!" isn't very large.

A lot of those stages were from franchises that already had playable representatives announced though. I think Shulk is a case where showing a Xenoblade stage beforehand would spoil the surprise.

I'll give him Punch-Out (though they made an effort to not use any Punch-Out logos for the initial reveal and Boxing Rings are pretty common in fighting games) but overall I agree with you. You can feign ignorance with the Boxing Ring. If any local from Xenoblade was revealed that would be a pretty big tip of the hand. I think only Electroplankton got a stage but no character last time right? But then again, NOBODY would expect a playable plankton or some shit :P

Zangurak will be a Lucina style clone of Ganondorf, believe.

I think it's just that Xenoblade is more well received, plus in a battle of mediocre main characters upstaged by almost everyone else in their parties Zael makes Shulk look like captain charisma, poor Zael doesn't even have a fancy sword gimmick like the Monado.

Monolith is owned by Nintendo
I believe The Last Story is also a Nintendo-owned IP, even if they don't own XSEED/Mistwalker.

So I at least expect a Zael and Calista trophy. Mirania can be DLC playable.

You announced Cory Baxter instead of Shadow Obama the Hedgehog.

I'm disappointed Hot Coldman

Also Last Story's armour system > Xenoblades by a long shot. In fact I'd say it's one of the best in any game I've played as it solves one of the big niggles I have with armour, stats vs looks.

Who do you consider to have the better look, Zael or Shulk?

Gotta wait for Shulk's look in XBCX before I compare him to Zael's Last Design.

That last update sucked.

Fun fact

Last Story's name is a reference to Final Fantasy

Same with gilgamesh's Ultimate Illusion
Final Fantasy was an allusion to Square quitting videogames if the game didn't take off.

It's the same thing for Tecmo and Dead or Alive!

Shulk is decidedly "less animu" than Zael so I prefer Shulk.

Last Story had the superior armor customization system but XB had far more pieces and the Gem system. The only really unique Hat/Helmet armor in XB are all eyeglasses. Pffft.

Basically they both have great ideas, but XB is definitely meatier.

Zael is awful, Calista vs Melia/Fiora is more interesting

Let's see, Shulk vs. Zael...

Zael_zps6fdbce27.png

Well, I'm admittedly only intimately familiar with one of the two, but from a first-glance, Zael's design is a lot more monochromatic in appearance. Kinda like the red accents Shulk has going for him. I suppose Zael does have a bit of actual armor going for him with those metal shoulder guards, but then, Shulk has access to actual armor later on in the game regardless... But that's presumably not the outfit they'd use in Smash, is it? This is. It's admittedly a little busy, but then, Zael's is too...

I dunno, I still think I'm gonna give the nod to Shulk.
