I mean is that tag ironic or... because... wow.

he wanted this guy

whoever he is

Zangurak will be a Lucina style clone of Ganondorf, believe.

I think it's just that Xenoblade is more well received, plus in a battle of mediocre main characters upstaged by almost everyone else in their parties Zael makes Shulk look like captain charisma, poor Zael doesn't even have a fancy sword gimmick like the Monado.
Zael has Gathering!

But yeah, if you put the games side by side, The Last Story suffers. Xenoblade is bigger, prettier, and more ambitious in terms of the scope of the world, plot, and cast. It's bombastic and big and leaves the sort of impression that leaves people claiming best game of the year.

The Last Story and it's hazy grey-brown, it's performance stutters, and by-the-books hero's journey is unremarkable in comparison.

(I liked The Last Story better though. The sidequests were meaningful, the voiced party banter was endearing compared to Xenoblade's more static Heart-to-Hearts, and I liked fighting the bosses more then Xenoblade's joy of actually discovering the bosses).

So while we're on the topic of characters not being in the game, which guys with Brawl did you feel would for-sure be in Brawl that didn't make it, and which ones actually did?
For me, Mewtwo was one, and I'd say Little Mac was probably the other. Was really surprised to see him end up being only an AT.
As for characters I did expect to make it in that actually got in, Diddy Kong and Olimar were easily my most expected after the initial trailer, though I did start to worry for Olimar when we still hadn't seen him close to release.

I do hope when it is all said and done Sakurai goes into detail about why each character that made it onto the roster, as an AT or as DLC (if it happens). I'd love to be privy to his thought process :)

There was also the Pictochat stage (not that I could fathom what kind of character could go there) and Smashville (Villager didn't join the fight until one game later, after all).

Derp how could I forget those :P

I suppose that makes the link between stage and character even more tenuous. All that being said, were it not for Gematsu, I feel Shulk would have been a huge surprise/fan favorite pick and revealing a stage beforehand would tip their hand too much. We have to remember, they didn't try to show us the Rhythm Heaven enemies in Smash Run, it was more an inadvertent result of just showing so much about Smash Run.

Also Last Story's armour system > Xenoblades by a long shot. In fact I'd say it's one of the best in any game I've played as it solves one of the big niggles I have with armour, stats vs looks.

Who do you consider to have the better look, Zael or Shulk?

Zael I guess but not by much, I don't find either to look particularly eye catching but Shulk looks more messy in his default attire with the odd combo of sweater, vest jacket and super shorts, it's like he's wearing clothes suited for various seasons all at once.
On the other hand his less battle geared attire makes him stand out a bit in the sea of JRPG protag designs where Zael feels more par for the course and also pretty cluttered.

Annoyingly Shulk's armour sets always tend to look pretty naff throughout Xenoblade, I think my favourite alternative was when I had everyone in the party decked out in their jungle attire.

Mewtwo was and odd cut for me, he is quite popular because of the movie and stuff, I almost cried when Lyn was announced as AT, guess how I feel about her being an AT AGAIN...

as for the actual roster, R.O.B, I still wonder why he was chosen... and Lucas, since almost nobody has played Mother 3 and Snake was a big surprise, I knew that Kojima wanted him in Melee, but I didn't expect that they actually pull it off, since it was a Nintendo Only Characters game, but glad he made it

Mewtwo, Mac, Mega Man, an Animal Crossing rep, and a newcomer for Metroid or F-Zero.

Villager. That post back then discarding him as "impossible" (paraphrasing) to make a moveset for was vinegar to me. I felt then as Takamaru fans feel today... I hope you too receive similar vindication!

Funnily enough, I was actually rooting for R.O.B. before the SSE was announced. I didn't list him because I didn't ever feel he was likely to be in, though. Although when the leaks started rolling around, I saw the picture someone drew of the outline of R.O.B. over the Ancient Minister, and that kinda blew my mind lol.

Yeah, I can't imagine donning the ridiculous looking dragon helm without toggling off it's appearance. I think Zael looks cooler, the character designer for TLS is actually pretty good. Just by comparing 2D artwork for the games it isn't a contest, for me anyway.

That said, a playable TLS rep doesn't make any sense at this point.

You know, I actually don't remember specifically wanting anyone in Brawl. I just wanted the game itself lol.

Sonic got me pretty excited though, and I thought ROB, Olimar, Wario and Lucario were very neat.

I think this... 2 years of Dojo hype + the infuriating European delay. Just wanted my filthy mitts on the damn game.

Oh, and then HILARIOUSLY when I finally did, my Wii was apparently one of those that was so dusty that it didn't read dual-layered discs properly. My 14 year old self had a massive freak-out. I wasn't proud of it. But damn, 2 years of waiting to get "The system could not read this disc"....

It would actually be really cool if ROB had an Ancient Minister alt. I always thought that design was badass.

I'm actually going to play The Last Story next as soon as I find a copy.

I'm impressed by how much better Wii U's Wii BC image quality is (playing Xenoblade now) so I figure I'll hunt down some JRPGs I never really dug deep in to.

Now that we've witnessed the Takamaru bloodbath, more fake leaks have been debunked. I wanted to see some meltdowns around the net but stumbled on a Gamefaqs topic to hold the tide until the next leaks are debunked.

Interesting! Everything seems plausible, and the manner in which he's been going about sharing information makes it seem all the more believable... I'd love if we got more newcomers than just Shulk and Chorus Men, so I say "bring it on!"

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread XII: The Mysterious Masahiro Castle

Yesyesyes. I love this!

No more Rayman representation, pls.

pls.

I feel you... I've played a couple Rayman games and they're fun and whatnot, but he's just such an aesthetically unappealing character--all of them are, honestly. :X

I know that's not what you were talking about, but I've been meaning to ask what people thought of the current Smashboards community - and if anyone remembers what it was like in 2007.

For what it's worth, I remember what it was like in the summer of 2001 leading up to Melee's release. #SBoldschool

So who's going to take Takamaru's place as the predominantly Japanese newcomer who hasn't had a new game in forever?
...
Prince_Sable.png

Yes, please! Prince Sable would make a wonderful addition, if only for the game's music.

And dont forget Bravely Default

The jp subtitle "Flying Fairy" was choosen so the game could be called BD: FF lol

The subtitle was also chosen so that
when you take away the F's, it becomes "Lying Airy"
. ;)

Jigglypuff's chances of returning were dashed the instant she became a Fairy-type

Sylveon Streams In

Sylveon's chances were pretty much wrecked the minute Greninja was revealed. The only reason anyone was considering it was because people were looking for a Gen 6 rep that was promoted enough to make sense as a newcomer, since Xerneas was already confirmed as a Pokeball Pokemon (and most expected Yveltal to be the same), and all the other new 'Mons took a back seat to the Mega Evolutions.

No more Rayman representation, pls.

pls.

Yeah. It is just so inherently irrelevant to smash bros, and without the comedy value of snake or historical significance of pacman.

Also they managed to at least find a pac man design that doesn't deserve the Judge Doom treatment. I'm not sure that such a rayman design is even possible.

I think I've finally decided on a dream character* that will never make it, but would be really fucking awesome.

E... B... A! characters*

RIP EBA =(

People are LOSING THEIR SHIT in the comments about an early release and people already having the game.

Oh, Internet. Never change!

Little Mac and Ridley, with Mewtwo staying and Samurai Goroh being a 50/50 I was hoping would happen.

I fully expected Diddy Kong/Dedede/Wario/Ike, and was fairly sure but not *absolutely* about Toon Link/Olimar/Ike/ROB and Sonic. I felt we'd get another Star Fox rep, but didn't know if it'd be Krystal or Wolf.

Thinking about it, SSB4 (if not for the 'leaks') has felt way less predictable with its roster than Brawl was after its reveal. Only choices that totally blindsided me in that game were Snake, Zero-Suit Samus and Pokemon Trainer. With this game Little Mac, Palutena and Pac-Man have been the only newcomers we've gotten that without any leaks I would've expected anyhow (even if I was dumb and took Pac-Man off my roster submission last year at the last minute).

Lol, I wish. These things are so easy to fake, how could anybody take this seriously. The game hasn't even gone gold yet, much less cartridges produced and shipped to retailers. But boy do I wish it were true!
