EA announces Subscription Service for Xbox One ($5/month or $30/year, get game vault)

The Vault needs more games before I'll become an active subscriber.

How many EA games are available for the Xbox One right now? Off the top of my head I can think of NFS: Rivals, FIFA 14, Madden 25, NBA Live 14, PvZ Garden Warfare, Battlefield 4 and Peggle 2. Titanfall is not included.

How the hell it can be a worrying trend? Lets say all major publishers start this kind of service, what's keeping you from buying your 60$ retail games as usual?
Options are a good thing, i personally don't find much value in EA offer, don't care about a year old games, but i wont cry about this option, I'll just not use it, but maybe Ubi will offer something better that i will like so why not?

If it doesn't hurt my 60$ retail purchases i don't understand what worrying about it.

£4 a month or £20 a year, wow. Excellent value.

Whoa, £20 for the year is insane value. I'll definitely be signing up.

£20 for EA Access, £21 (or thereabouts) for ears sub of Gold from CDKeys when it's on sale....

Hard to see a downside when I can get both for the official RRP of just a gold sub.

This is actually quite an innovative approach to counter used games sales it would seem

I'd have to wait and see on future offerings but it's certainly an interesting idea

I am kind of curious though if it would not perhaps encourage consumers to wait until games come to the vault rather than buy them new. If so, perhaps EA is counting on that and wants to fully transition to a model like this?

Uhhh because it's never been done for games on consoles?

You honestly don't see how this can be a bad thing? Separating different media into different services for no real reason. Like how you may never see EA Games on PS Now or OnLive because of this service, or the steps you'd have to jump through to play years later. Likely, You'd have to get an X1, a Xbox Live subscription, and now this EA subscription too. Had EA not, stupidly, locked this down to just X1, I'd still say it's pretty stupid, but at least it may have had cross-save or something.

Exaclty. It's like some people are already thinking EA is killing the physical market and only allowing subscription model games.

Except that a third party publisher providing a subscription service exclusively on one of the platforms is far more coercive upon consumers than 6 months exclusive DLC. This is far, far worse.

How would you feel about Ubisoft launching a subscription service exclusively on PSN?

Im not sure I understand the question? I would feel like people on PSN (including myself if it was on PS3/Vita as well) were getting a good deal or something I would be very interested in getting if I had a PS4

Not sure why anyone would ever be upset by this. Outside of the fact is optional, it's great for folks who buy those titles all the time, or sold their copies while they had retail value but still have an itch to play until the new one comes out. Add on that beyond that you get a little discount when you buy a future game and "early demo" access basically that allows your progress to move over to your digital or retail purchase, and it's not really a bad deal. All for $30 a month. Some would pay that for the early demo access to EA games alone. Add on you get some legacy titles and game discounts?

No matter how you want to slice the math, it's good for EA and good for gamers that actually like their games.

Apologies if this has already been mentioned (thread is moving fast), but doesn't this mean the end of traditional demos for EA games?

Because what if ubisoft does this and it's exclusive to sony ?

Then ms does it again with activison.

Is this confirmed or are you guys just guessing based on conversion rates?

not interested in the "EA vault" but the 10% discount on digital purchases and dlc is cool, early access as well, but overall i don't think , for me, it would make up/justify the yearly fee since i don't buy that many EA games.

And that 10% off the digital prices on XBOX One is most likely still going to make the games more expensive then if it they're bought from Amazon or something similiar, so this will only be good for those that are dead set on buying the games digitally on XBOX One. And how many of us here had planned to do that?

This is pretty clever by EA.
They get a fixed amount of money from subscriptions and this also encourages customers to buy digital (EA gets more money than retail) and to buy day1 (so customers get more more out of the 10% discount), while actually making this a pretty good deal for those who buy a lot of ea games.

Well played.

His question assumes you only have xbone (No PS4).

well, 30 bucks is well worth it for those 4 games for one year alone.

I'll buy a year to test it out

This is what I've been thinking the entire time reading this thread. I don't own any of those 4 games. Would I like to play them on my Xbox One? Sure. $30 for all 4? That's a great deal to me. To the people saying that you need to purchase x amount of games per year for it to be a good value are completely missing the "vault" aspect of it. The library will continue to grow. Having the chance to play all of those games for $30 a year? Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit. Day 1.

Why would EA sacrifice millions of dollars, essentially abandoning the market leader, just to sell old games for pennies on the dollar on one platform?

That scenario is fucking stupid dude. Tell me one reason why that would happen?

No interest in the current offering, even if it makes its way to the UK for a reasonable price, but the approach is very interesting.

I think they'll approach it in a similar way to the free to play model, but with a low fee, reduced base content in games, and more focus on DLC. I hate thinking about it, but if it means I get to try more games for a low price, then I might be on board with it.

EA Access must of been in developmental hell and MS stepped in to save it. /s.

Or in the words of our very own Mr. John Harker

"Naw, MS raining cash these days."

Except this is the uk and we always get screwed so expect £5 a month and £30 a year

Except you'll be able to buy the keys retail, so shortly after release i would expect the subs keys to be on various sites and even on Gafs B/T/S thread for quite a lot cheaper.

Edit.
Never mind, noticed it was already confirmed as £3.99 and £19.99.

For some reason I'm not worried. Yeah....for now it may be exclusive because it's new/risky and Micro or Sony has to cough up some money to get it exclusive. If it takes off, and becomes self sustaining ,I don't really see pubs putting their services on one console. Limiting their services.

I don't get the exclusivity thing either, maybe they want to test it with MS first, but if it will be a big success there is no way EA are giving up on all the money the can get out of PS4 users, as well as Ubi and any other major publisher, this is too big of a thing to remain exclusive.

Oh man, I hope Activision and Ubisoft set up their own subscription stores and take their titles off XBL/PSN, then console gamers can finally say “it's just like PC gaming!!”

It is! It does make one worry a little, since "what's good business for EA" and "what's good for players" are generally inversely proportional. Not saying that there don't seem to be some player-friendly features, though.

Madden 15 is 2.5 weeks away why woukd i want to play madden 14 and broken BF4?

wat? not everyone cares about getting the latest version of a sports game. If i can get fifa 14 with this sub for 5 for a month or 30 for a year, i can certainly wait till next year for fifa 15 not have to pay a full 60

So there are currently 8 EA games on Xbox One so far.

They're giving out 4, which means the rest they can possibly add to the vault are:

Titanfall
Need For Speed Rivals
NBA Live 14
UFC

I guess have fun with NBA Live 14 in a few months eh?

Sure!
But it has just been announced and yeah, it is lacking.
It might have some promise in the future..
what is it to discuss when we dont know so much more? EA has barely outlined this properly.. it seems that people are just taking sides.. one side is downplaying it hard because it is not on their platform, others like the concept and perhaps see this as a second coming..

either way, it is a choice service and either sides likes choices..right?

There are plenty of people in here who don't care about the exclusivity of this subscription service and has not made a single mention of it. It is really your own perception problem if you want to view every poster here as some console war participant.

It's also GAF's nature to discuss future things and choices. Why act like it's something out of the norm?

I said PS NOW, not PS4 as a whole. Like how Netlfix and Amazon fight for streaming rights and all that.

it was honestly the opposite for me.

It sounds like we'll essentially be getting all the year old sports games every year.

Im finnnnnnne with that

Titanfall won't be included. It was in the fine print.

Oh, I don't know, get people hooked on the service then stop "selling" games then jack up the price of the service?

What could go wrong? THA FUTUR!

That's $6 per new release you buy...plus 10% off DLC. If you buy 5 new releases over a year you get your moneys worth, plus access to the games in the vault.

Does anyone know when this will be available?

EA told kotaku it will be avaliable in a few weeks (this summer),

EA said that a beta version of the service is already being introduced to a small number of Xbox One owners today. The company didn't specify a date for a full release.
