EA announces Subscription Service for Xbox One ($5/month or $30/year, get game vault)

I haven't read up on the thread yet, but has anyone did the "Yo Dawg I heard you like betas, so I put betas in your beta" joke yet?

That $30 a year sounds like a great deal, almost too good. I'm suspect about it.

That's $6 per new release you buy...plus 10% off DLC. If you buy 5 new releases over a year you get your moneys worth, plus access to the games in the vault.

Does anyone know when this will be available?

Most of the time you could find a used copy somewhere for 10% or more off the week a game comes out and you can trade that copy in later on. It's a very weak incentive.

pay for trials ? NOPE.

I like the idea of playing old games but EA's games are mostly yearly titles, and really who wants to play FIFA14 when 15 lands ?

I thought about subscription services by publishers in the past. Especially around MS's original DRM announcement.

The pricing and digital discount seems right. A nice way to support the devs with a return in value.

The vault right now is't right for me though. Not a fan of sports games.

So does this confirm pre-loading then? If you are able to DL a game 5 days early then that's that? Or will it not be the entire game you DL, just a snippet that you play for 2 hours?

Not sure why anyone would ever be upset by this. Outside of the fact is optional, it's great for folks who buy those titles all the time, or sold their copies while they had retail value but still have an itch to play until the new one comes out. Add on that beyond that you get a little discount when you buy a future game and "early demo" access basically that allows your progress to move over to your digital or retail purchase, and it's not really a bad deal. All for $30 a month. Some would pay that for the early demo access to EA games alone. Add on you get some legacy titles and game discounts?

No matter how you want to slice the math, it's good for EA and good for gamers that actually like their games.

I think the worry is they will start locking content behind it even more to force people into it... like EA does. Also, these are not new titles that are offered... and 'paid demos' are bullshit by any standard, considering the new game you will still have to go out and buy, only to have it added to this service a year later. EA will never add a game that is making money and still selling well to this subscription, because...well... they are EA

Stuff like this is why I have 2 parts of an EA trilogy on Steam and will most likely never play the 3rd. I wouldn't doubt they do something like that here to get the subscribed base up.

I wouldn't and I do buy FIFA every year, but I wouldn't mind have the year old versions of Madden or NBA or NHL or whatever.

It's good value for Xbone owners, however it's unfair to PS4 owners.

It's EA. It's guaranteed coming to PS4, PC and every other platform they release games on.

This is more like a trial for EA to test the service, wouldn't be surprised if it was using Azure in some capacity too.

EA told kotaku it will be avaliable in a few weeks (this summer),

Thanks.

It's a great incentive for those who are digital only on X1. Once pre-loading is available you'll be able to play digital games quicker and cheaper than going out and buying them on day one. It's not for everyone, and that's why this is an optional service.

...enjoy 10% discounts on EA digital download purchases, including full games, downloadable content and in-game currency. Conditions, limitations and exclusions apply.
I guess discounts won't be for everything. Perhaps more of a category thing like discounts for Fifas, but not for XYZ?

All EA games are available Day One on the Marketplace. I have no idea where you are getting this. EA states that you download the full game and get a period of time to access it. Why in the hell would they not let you download the full game from the marketplace?
I'm getting it from the text I quoted from EA's terms.
As part of the EA Access Services, members with an active subscription are offered (1) the ability to play a limited trial of certain EA Content 5 days prior to the date that EA Content is otherwise available on the Xbox Marketplace (“Play First”)
Which is vague enough to incorporate a large amount of scenarios.

Where does EA state this? I've seen Major Nelson state it, but not EA. It's not in EA's blog post or in EA's terms.

Never mind.
you’ll always be playing the real game

There are plenty of people in here who don't care about the exclusivity of this subscription service and has not made a single mention of it. It is really your own perception problem if you want to view every poster here as some console war participant.

It's also GAF's nature to discuss future things and choices. Why act like it's something out of the norm?

So my point was the downplaying part. Yeah, I know this is neogaf but neogaf can perhaps grow a bit..

It is stupidity itself to jump in a thread and bash something because it is not on their system. If you have to make a choice from the beginning, then you are already aware of stuff that you will be missing.. why come in and bash about it.

The ideal would be like.. you know, rejoicing about a potential cool service and if anything, than perhaps this can entince those who chose one system, to buy another one.

However, we will probably have peace between Palestine-Israel before Neogaf wises up, right?

It's a great deal if you are a fan of EA's output and while I'm not sure what the UK price will be, $30 for the year is very reasonable. I suppose the big question is how long will it take for new releases to appear on the service. I'd guess at a 6 month minimum wait but who knows, maybe EA will surprise me.

Because what if ubisoft does this and it's exclusive to sony ?

Then ms does it again with activison.
It's a worrying trend.

Eh, is it really? Currently, Ubisoft and Activision don't have these options for anyone. Have it for some gamers is still better than having it for none of them. Would console exclusivity be a pain for this service? I guess, but right now we don't have the option anywhere. If the only negative is that only some gamers would get it, then there is no downside, since not having it changes nothing.

Interesting... But I'm not personally interested in EA games that aren't from BioWare, PopCap, or Maxis. Might be worth a month rental just to play Peggle 2 and try out Battlefield, FIFA, and Madden. Good job, EA. You've... earned it.

The value here is very low with no indication of what's to come, not sure why anyone would be excited before we see the big picture. This is EA after all, they are not doing this out of the goodness of their heart.

Which works out to the price of games recently until the recent price hike. LOL!!! I already pay less then that for new games to begin with from various promotions with EB/Gamestop, Amazon and Best Buy. This promo is pretty much garbage unless you're really into playing the new titles a few hours to a day earlier then launch. Still a waste of money if you ask me.

I recon it will be £24 or £4 per month

I'll bite a couple years down the road when EA's current-gen library gets bigger.

Pretty decent pricing I'm surprised to say, just not right now.

I think as of now it's crazy to say anything but "this is awesome!"

$2.50 a month for early trials, %10 discounts on all games and DLC, and access to a library of older games...

This is where I want every publisher to go. We will see if it works or if they pull the rug out from under us somehow, but right now, I'm am wayyyyyy in.

Maybe the money they make from this will help keep the servers alive for older titles they shutdown after a year or two from release day. That's a positive right?

I don't trust EA enough to subscribe to anything they do.

I also think that this kind of a library service is the way to go for major publishers. However, if there is a single publisher who can louse it up, it's EA. You can be sure they will somehow ruin it for everybody, go back on their promises and generally dick people over for a couple of bucks.

It's $2.50 a month! How is that low value compared to what you get?

Uninterested. Nothing about this is appealing to me. Give them money in advance and they'll take that money off the game. Sounds like preordering to me. Getting a game demo 5 days early? I can wait. I don't think this is going to be a big success unless they add some type if value. 10% off us basically covering taxes in state where you still have to pay online taxes.

Now if they gave you the game a week early AND gave you 10% off this could be a game changer. As I see it now, it's a way to get more money out of people by basically offering them legacy titles of yearly IPs.

I dont see the value for sports titles, if they offer a service where they're adding new titles after a year (which this seems like). Majority of those sports titles can be purchased for under £5 after a year.

Only true value i see in this service is for games like Mass effect, Dead Space, Dragon Age etc.

So there are currently 8 EA games on Xbox One so far.

They're giving out 4, which means the rest they can possibly add to the vault are:

Titanfall
Need For Speed Rivals
NBA Live 14
UFC

I guess have fun with NBA Live 14 in a few months eh?
You forgot about arguably the best EA title on XBox One and that is Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare. It is my most played XBox One game.

This sounds really cool but I have no interest in sports games. I know there will be something for me down the line though so I'll be keeping an eye out for this.

Never mind.

No worries. I've tried posting the FAQ a few times, but everyone has ignored me at this point because I stated you would have access to the full game and got caught up on the limited time aspect. The limited time aspect is likely for some SP games, but I have a feeling sports games will be full access as you don't "win" them.

Trials sounds interesting, they could give me trial of one MP mode in BF each time, while my suscription is up I could play a portion of the game.
