Giant Bomb #8 | It's a Hit!

About 2 years ago Ryan/Brad talked about trying to get Tie Fighter working on Windows 7 and they couldn't because it had issues. I proceeded to write a guide on how to get these games to work perfectly on Windows 7, and linked it to Brad. Not sure if they checked it out, but didn't get a response.

It's a little bit involved to get working so I don't know if they are going to do it, and Windows 8 seems to have some issues with 3D acceleration on X-Wing and Tie Fighter unfortunately...

But I am going to try to update my guide for Windows 8 (and also fix the broken links to the Reconstructed guide I helped with which restores some of the original music from the DOS version of Tie Fighter but re-orchestrated in much higher quality) and perhaps even just send the guys a bootable USB drive which has everything they need to do a bombastica of any of those games.

Couldn't they just use a Windows XP virtual machine? Or 95, or whatever. They've already done that for other games.

A day later, Velvet Sundown has become my biggest disappointment of 2014.

The text to speech system being down for anyone who doesn't want to pay money for... whatever, takes most of the fun out of conversations, and nearly every session I join now has at least one person who DCs* right off the bat, which always ends with more and more people disconnecting until the boat is full of people frozen in idle animations and nobody can complete any objectives (though honestly most people now aren't even trying to play). Cue 10 minutes of 2-3 people walking around the boat unable to do anything because they exhausted all of the available options before quitting.

*The way disconnecting works is that your character stays in the world frozen until the end of the session, and you can't actually quit individual sessions; you have to quit to desktop and wait until the current session ends, or else trying to load up VS will just reconnect you to the same session again.

Yeah, it's a technical mess right now. It seems like they didn't anticipate that people would actually play the game when they put it on Steam.

dat potential tho

I agree, it's a beautiful game _in concept_ but they need to fix a lot of things.

Velvet Sundown doesn't seem like a game you actually play with other people. RPing with friends, maybe.

You could make an argument that it doesn't really work as a game repeatedly played by people, but it's best suited as a vehicle for funny videos and a hotbed for hilarious stories at the videogame watercooler.

Like DayZ or Rust or something.

Since Velvet Sundown relies so much on interaction with other actual human players, you're probably right. The first people who find a game like that are likely to be the dedicated crowd, the crowd that wants to role play and have fun. When more and more people come to the game you get more and more regular Steam users who's only there to fuck things up. I can probably count on one hand the times I've played the game with Malik around when someone didn't spew some racist bullshit at him.

Can't watch the stream, hopefully it'll be up on the site tomorow.
Also Mario Party is one of the best games ever made, so I'll unsubscribe if Greg says anything bad about it. It's just amazing.
Also that fucking Shyguy Minigame burned my palms. Literally.

Yeah I bet...

It doesn't help that the current free scenario is much worse than the first one. The Fire at Sea scenario had its problems, but at least it had 1) a fairly clear goal for each person. 2) More randomization, so you couldn't immediately tell who was playing what role. 3) More tolerant of AFKs (Technically, the only important one is the Civilian who finds the data, as long as they stay on, the main missions can progress).

With this fathers and sons scenario, there's no clear completable objectives. The objectives seem to pop up or change at random times with seemingly no rhyme or reason. And there's the objectives that cannot be reliably progressed or completed at this time (e.g. bedding another guest, reporting Alex with Ingmar's radio for using drugs), giving the whole scenario an unfinished feel. The scenario is also less tolerant of AFKs, as I've seen more cascading disconnects (e.g. Mary DCs, so no one can get the key to the liquor cabinet, which means Alex DCs, then Ingmar and Boyle DCs, and then Linda due to a lack of stories to get).

Oh Velvet Sundown, you're too beautiful for this world.

The new scenario seems poorly designed though. Most of the objectives are really unclear, especially at the outset. It seems really common to finish rounds having accomplished basically nothing. And all of the inventory items don't have much apparent value so everyone immediately dumps all their stories and drinks and shit on everyone else which just makes your objective sidebar super cluttered. It's much more roleplaying-heavy than the last one, but it's asking you to roleplay stuff like going insane or falling in love or entering a drug-induced nightmare, which is kind of a tall order for anyone whose improv skills aren't super sharp.

As someone who primarily just looks at the videos, he's pretty much faded over the past couple of weeks while he's been refocusing on the written stuff.

With how much content GB east and west are able to put out now, i think it's given Patrick more room to focus on written content since the site is not relying on him putting out some video content.

It's been pretty easy to forget that Patrick is still a part of the site lately. I wonder if some CBSi bean counter has noticed the same thing.

Yeah, I mostly skip his articles and rarely watch the morning show so without any QL Solos/Spookin'/etc. I don't think I've watched a piece of Patrick content in a few weeks.

I'm guessing with GBeast now ramping up, the days of the QL Solo are pretty much over.

I have another bet to make with myself, If there is no Ted DiBiase mention during the Mario Party Party I will keep my BBT avatar an extra month. Otherwise, I am dumping in come August 1st.

How does that limit him posting videos?

Did they do a quarterly review and not like Patrick's content?

GB Chicago was informally Patrick, Max and Dave Lang. Patrick was working out of CAH's office, in fact.

That drama probably put a kibosh on featuring Max in any video content, at least for the time being.

How are you liking the One Piece game?

also, you're a masochist OR out of better avatar ideas

They're talking about GB Chicago, which Max informally was a part of. Patrick worked/works out of the CAH office. I have absolutely no clue if they did a quarterly review and found Patrick's content lacking, but probably not.

I'm not saying it's an excuse for anything, I'm just saying that Patrick's plans probably took a big fucking hit with this.

They should just play Fortune Street again.

Fuck yes.

Patrick just needs an office corner and a Vinny type video/games person in the Chicago area. Who's Chicago based they could bring on?

Then well literally get too much content to watch.

I am enjoying the little bit I played, but I am only about an hour passed where they ended the QL. Watched about 6 episode of the series too, and I really like that as well. The show seems like the perfect brand of crazy for me. Problem is. I stumbled into giving Heartstone a go a week or so back. and that is now taking up a lot my gametime.

I really think Dan will bring it up, and comment that "Everybody has a price" at some point during the show. I am just going back to my old Gob from Arrested Development avatar once this BBT phase is over - if it ever ends!

Now we're talking here!

Speaking of Ed Boon, I hope Jeff tries to get him to do a retrospective thing on the Mortal Kombat franchise like Lang and :D did with the games they've been a part of. He obviously likes the GB crew and seems like the kind of person who would actually want to and be able to do such a thing. Would be super interesting.

Boon's smile is the stuff of legend

You know, I had this thought recently. I mean, obviously they could talk about MK 1-3 but that wouldn't be as interesting as some of the more obscure and forgotten MK titles. Problem is, those games were pretty bad, mostly. I don't know how comfortable Boon would be discussing those (and Jeff would have to keep his thoughts on those games in check).

I'd rather they did something, though, obviously. Maybe focus on some of the better 3D MK games.
