EA announces Subscription Service for Xbox One ($5/month or $30/year, get game vault)

There's something really uncomfortable with these exclusive deals between Microsoft and EA.
Fear!

How much money has Microsoft given to EA this past year?
Uncertainty!

And isn't it kinda frightening that Microsoft is VERY DEPENDENT on EA holding up their gaming division?
Fear!

I mean, from the outside, it looks like Microsoft is paying EA to be a crutch for the Xbox One.
Uncertainty!

Between this and Titanfall...
Doubt!

FUFUD?

Man all those subscriptions would add up if you want to have everything !
Amazon Premium
World of Warcraft
PS+
XboxLive
Netflix

now EA ?
...
starting to get potentially heavy !

Seriously... I just cancelled one of my Comcast Xfinity Packages and scaled down from Preferred Digital HD Tier to Digital Economy non-HD Tier just so I can save $50 a month.

I also dropped BLAST internet to Performance. 20DOWN/5UP is all I need right now anyway.

Having fun online is just getting too expensive. Time to start cutting these subs!

Interesting sentiments. I wonder what EA will respond with, should the Bone fall farther in sales. Also, what if the PS4 drops price combined with a wider gap between it and Xbox One?

It reminds me of SE, how they stated they didn't want PS3 to be the overwhelming winner nor the overwhelming loser.
We know how that turned out, they favored 1 console nearly an entire console cycle.
Sheesh.

I wish we had numbers regarding the deal between MS and EA. Thinking about it has me salivating with curiosity.

So new releases won't be added to the vault? Meh. It's a lot to ask for, but that's what it would take for me to even consider subscribing to a third party publisher.

Not interested in months old sports games and little 10% discounts for new releases.

I don't understand.

If the Vault only has older games, what's the point?
If you would have wanted a game from that Vault, wouldn't you already have it? Like Battlefield 4?

This reminds me of Steam tactics:
"Look guys, these games are damn cheap! Do you want them and will you play them? NO.
But you will buy them anyway because they are cheap... Right guys?! YES."

So that means the extra value should be seen in the 10% discount.
But as said above me, you would have to buy quite a lot of EA games to take advantage of this.
And EA isn't really a publisher that shits out good games by the month...

FUFUD?

Somewhat, but MS over relying on third parties is an issue, especially in the situation they currently find themselves as they continue to loose exclusives. Why do you think the whole, I'll just wait a few months for a PS version thought is so pervasive? In a couple of months, I'll be playing DR3 on my PC, PvZ on my PS4, and I already got to play the X1's biggest exclusives without spending a cent on the console (though admittedly, it wasn't for me). MS needs a stronger first party, the Halo/Fable/Forza/Gears just won't cut it anymore (for me, at least).

I personally don't like the close relationship, since it just screws everyone else over. Exclusive DLC is fine, but timed exclusives like this and other EA examples is just bad.

It's not just MS. Go back and watch the PS4 conference and see how many times their suits mentioned 3rd party partnerships and exclusive content.

Madden 25 is still $25 on Amazon, FIFA is still $40.

Multiple deals is ok - spreading the wealth around is fine.

But isolating a single publisher, like EA, is kinda scary.

Peter Moore's influence at EA, being a former Xbox guy, is really starting to spill back over to Microsoft.

Hah. What if ea bought the ms Xbox division and the EA box was finally born
More likely MS buys EA after their whole console/AA strategy is dependent of Xbox One and MS also gets Origin on the side to attempt to gain some presence on PC gaming after their Games for Windows Live failed completely. Based Agent Peter Moore.

It will be interesting to see if other companies follow EA on this. If they do, the games offered on GWG and PS+ will become much more limited. That hopefully doesn't happen, but if this is successful for EA, certainly others will set up their own service.

I'm lost. Why do so many think its a good deal?

$30 to play year old sports games that are about $2 each once the new one comes out?

I get it if you buy a lot of EA stuff, kind of like a pay for version of Nintendo's Digital Deluxe, but for your average gamer I don't see the value.

Devaluing those used games even more. Making deals with Amazon and GameStop to stock codes to buy into their service. I don't think I want any part of this.

If that ever happened, I'd sell my Origin account for 5 bucks and use that money to purchase a Dos Equis to wash down the feels.

I'm saying your current line of speculation has no basis in fact or even past history. It's completely imagined.

The basis to my speculation is EA being a shitty anti consumer company who has ruined games before with micro transactions and loves to squeeze money out of their consumers. Its not completely imagined.

So just because a games old, and we want to play it now because of the vault, that means that we would have already bought it and played it?

Makes sense.

some google fu values ea at $11B... that's a fucking big aquisition!! But microsoft are the company that paid $8B for skype

No, the 5 day early access is available for every member, it's just you can't play more than 2 hours during this 5 days

not true, how these trials work vary by game, some games let you play only certain modes with no time limit, some have time limits, those that have time limits 2 hours is the min allowed.

Awesome deal. Forwarded to a few of my friends and they will be jumping on this as well. Great move and good price per month by EA.

If you can't see the value, it probably isn't for you. It is for me. A library of games that will grow over time, early access to all new games and a 10% discount on everything. That is worth my $30.

EA keeps making very small steps to make me think they have finally changed their attitude as a corporation...

But I feel like every time they take steps forward, they end up doing something stupid that puts them 10 steps back.

Regardless of your opinion on the practicality of this service, its still very cool and shows that EA has some sort of forward thinking going on.

say you pay $30 for the year. you get some free games. but then you buy 3 new $60 games.. with the subs you save $18 dollars. so now you are down just $12. you buy some dlc, you also save some money, season passes etc.... just looking at it like that it is easy to see why it is a good deal

bf5 + premium will be $100 or $110. that is $10 or $11 saved right there. it goes on

Some guys write like this one is only for sports games...Funny

Well, Sports games and shooters. Only EA game I'm buying this year is DA:I and maybe PVZ (probably wait till it hits bargain bin). Other than that, Star Wars, and ME2 are the only other EA games that come to mind immediately. Other than that, what is there? I'm interested in the 5 day trial, but only depending on how it actually works.

Considering what I've gotten from live on the XBO and + on the PS4 this looks like one hell of a bargain. I may bite for BF4 and Peggle 2

Oh, thats neat. I personally dont like EA games, but this could be huge with certain demographics (the play in advance feature, mostly). X1 saved?

Color me unimpressed. Pay EA $30 a year to save $6 on digital purchases. Can't resell the games, and even if you could most of them will be worth next to nothing a few months after they come out anyway. Game vault sounds like a poor man's PS+.

Let me guess. You need to keep a CC on file with EA and the subscription is set to auto-renewal by default. Then when you want to cancel you have to call a 1-800 number that will then transfer you to the Comcast customer service center for some reason. You'll spend a half hour on hold and then another half hour with the CSR after which you not only didn't get your subscription canceled, but somehow unknowingly signed up for a two-year contract with Comcast as well. The CSR bids you farewell with a $5 credit towards your EA account and you feel much better about yourself.

This is the best post in this thread.

That is just EA subscription. What's if Ubisoft, Activision, Square...

I think it will be better off, all the publishers in the one. Like PS+ but more 3rd party publishers involved rather than just 1st party/indie.

Is your plan to not buy any ea game and wait for the vault? Taking advantage of the 10% sold minimizes the value of the vault and since it'd just Xbox one games (so far) and their game output has shrunk down it's the only way I could see it.

Now if this was for PC and they announced $30 a year for every EA game ever then I'm curious

I wonder if this will be successful, or if it will end up falling short of expectations like the WWE network. The lure of archives seems interesting at first blush, but when it comes down to ponying up the bucks, are people ready for that commitment? I already have GameFly, which is more expensive over s year, but also gives me access to a large catalog of new and okd games from all publishers. I only have a PS4, but I don't know if I'd pay 30 bucks a year for just EA's catalog when I already have access to it with GF. PEACE.

EA does more than sports games...and I think you're a bit exaggerating with the $2 figure.

Sorry if this has been asked before but... so... you sign up and have access to every game ever added to the Vault? Just like that? Or will they feed you games one month and then replaced those offerings next month, just like PS+ and GwG?

I'm skeptical, because if it's like PS+, I don't think EA has enough content to feed us every month. And if it's a permanent collection, what stops you from waiting until the list gets big, sign up for a few months, play everything, and then say SEE YA and wait another huge period without paying anything until they add tons of new offerings again?

DA $60, PVZ $40, SW $60, ME2 $60, you will get $22 off on that alone, throw in some DLC, and you would probably break even. Too bad its not for PS4 yet.

Yeah. I said the same thing about the Destiny PS4 exclusive extras. That's the industry for you.

This is on a whole nother level from what Destiny did. That is one game on many systems. This is the largest video game publishing company choosing one console with many games.

Destiny content on the PS3/4 are exclusive until the end of next year. This EA thing, as we know it anyways, is going to be exclusive to the Xbone forever.

One game vs a whole company.

One year exclusive content for one game vs exclusive content on one system for a massive publisher.
