EA announces Subscription Service for Xbox One ($5/month or $30/year, get game vault)

Someone knows if the library will only expand or if it'll have a game portfolio rotation?
I mean I can see a lot more value if all the games that go in to the program stay there "forever".

Of course that who will be playing Fifa14 in 2019? I won't (actually no Fifa whatsoever for me) but someone may want to.

Further proof that the reason why EA was so behind Microsoft and the Xbox One is because they love the idea of turning everything into Rentals and 100% online DRM solutions.

Lol. Xbone is my main, Ps4 is for the few exclusives that are actually good. I also have a PC and still buy multiplats on Xbone.

While I will buy more than just exclusives on PS4 and also have a gaming PC, I also tend to use Xbox as my main.

Call me stupid but the whole HDMI pass through thing is actually something I enjoy. I love having all my games digitally and just picking up the controller and verbally telling Xbox what to go play.

You won't need to saddle up with Microsoft to use this service.

or maybe the internet is just full of viral marketeers/astroturfers/whatever the fuck they call it these days

best bang for the marketing buck, people tend to tune out advertising but not opinions from 'real people'.

The only sensible way to approach it now is to only look at the negative reviews to see if there are issues that would bother you regarding a product. All positive hype is suspect.

So, Xbox wants me to test EA's, reports it's bugs, etc without giving me anything? Not even a month for free? Fuck off.

I don't understand how the economies of scale is going to work for a service like this. What motive will people have to purchase new titles if EA charges 30 dollars a year for an entire vault of games?

If I'm reading this right- they are offering a full suit of one year old sports titles alongside their flagship shooter? This will rangle up the majority of casuals and insure they almost never invest in newer titles.

Like most subscription services it will only benefit some people. I understand the vitriol and hatred towards the digital gaming movement and EA in general but seriously guys like the movie industry before it, this is the direction most media will end up in.

I'm glad you brought that up. Back before the consoles were announced there were lots of articles about developers complaining about piracy and losing money and stuff like that.

After the backlash Microsoft took it seemed most developers changed their tune to "DRM hurts gaming". I personally always found that amusing.

My guess is Electronic Arts was one of the main developers pushing for Xbox always online solution. Iirc didn't EA drop one of their online requirements shortly before the Xbox announcement.

It would seem that while Microsoft lost lots of favor from many people, they actually strengthened their relationship with EA.

I'm sure lots of the hate will go away when Mass Effect 4 shows the first game play trailer.

only USA....booo @ NO CANADA

It'll be available in Canada on day one.

From the FAQ

Will EA Access be available in my country?

At launch, EA Access will be available in Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, United Kingdom, and the United States with additional territories to follow.

Well yes, I think a certain portion of gamers will use this as a way to get "free" games. But I also think many people that buy games day 1 will still buy games day 1, and may use this as a way to get them cheaper (due to the discounts).

I think a lot depends on how much they offer for "free" and at what points in the yearly cycle they offer games. I imagine most people who "need" to play games day 1 will still get them then. And for others (such as myself, who often waits months before playing "new" games), this kind of service could be very appealing.

I suppose EA's angle/motivation is they're going after people that would never buy their games to begin with (or only buy their games used). This way they still get some money off of these people. And they might get these people to buy more games because they'll be enticed by the 10% off deals. And the demos 5 days early sounds interesting.

I disagree. Casuals already have the opportunity to buy old used games for cheap. This is merely a play to capture that market that buys last year's game when the new sequel comes out. I don't see them losing any new game sales to this because in actuality, nothing has really changed except for easier access to those "used"/old games.

Well... there is also a slighty chance that some people may prefer che current Xbox One lineup to the PS4 one. Just to say...

Not to say there are some features that the XB1 has that the PS4 doesn't have...I don't get how people can't see why someone might be more interested in an XB1 or WiiU over a PS4. These people do exist.

EA dropped the online pass, which essentially required purchasers of used copies of the game to pay $10 if they wanted to play online. Now we know why that was dropped. This EA Access pass is a much better play on their part.

not everyone has multiple consoles-or are you not aware of this?

What make you think that every person who owns PS4 and X1? Has PS4 as their main console.

Aaaaand you are talking in plural... (us) because?

Because he was surprised that multiple people (there's your plural) didn't find this to be awesome, thus I was telling him why some of us might not find this to be awesome. Try reading who I'm responding to, as well.

Show me where exactly I wrote that I have a problem with people not being excited about this one. You clearly don't get my point ... So just don't make a comment on it.

You were surprised people had a negative reaction. Again, I told you why a segment of the population might. Don't tell me what I can comment on.

The first impressive thing MS and EA have done this gen. Thats a sad thing in a way, took them so long, but on the other hand, I suppose every turnaround has to start somewhere. Been a boring disappointing generation thusfar.

Yea, $22 off across what, 2 years? Hardly enough.

Yeah, 22$ or more across two years. Did I miss a memo where you had to save 'enough' to save at all? Its not like EA is removing the option for you to buy your games the normal way, so why are you so hostile to an offering that would save people that play EA games "Hardly $22 a year"????? Makes no sense.

I mean its pretty damn obvious that if you don't like/play EA games that a service offering EA games wouldn't be of value to you. But its also obvious that hundreds of thousands of people to play games by EA, so they may find this a nice way to save some cash.

Well for myself, I get NHL and FIFA every year. Right there I am "saving" $12 with this new plan. If I end up buying Dragon Age for example this program will essentially cost me $12 for the year which isn't bad at all.

I'm going to wait and see what games get selected for "The Vault" before I dive in. But if at most, this will end up costing me $18/year I think it may be worth it. Not to mention I think it covers in game purchases and DLC so add up 10% off of all that and $30 looks even better.

Your other point about this encouraging people to buy more is also a good one.

$5/month is $5 more than I am willing to spend on EA products.

Very insightful post there friend.
You mean to tell me there is no EA product[published or developed] you would spend $5 dollars on?

I dont want to call you out or nothing, but do you own a Sony or Microsoft console?
If so please release you GT lets see just how much you dont like EA by seeing hours put into all the EA games you couldnt spend $5 on.

P.S You just might have missed out on alotta good games man.

Price is right i just don't want to sign up to anything that has to do with EA or buy a new system to try it out. But if PS4 gets it down the line i might give it a try for the Vault alone.

just got a code from MS for being in the XBO preview dash.. downloading now.

edit: gives you the app but still need to pay for a sub... was hoping we'd get a month free.

If it works on XB1 i imagine the PS4 will be next....heck, the PS4 serivce could already be deep in development and be just weeks away from launch.
So you will get a chance to test it out.......if anything you should be happy for now XB1 owners can test the waters for ya, if the feedback is good, when the PS4 one comes out your decision will be easier.

Yea, $22 off across what, 2 years? Hardly enough. Like I said, I'm very interested in how the game trials will work but until there's more info (as in, can we play the whole game for 5 straight days), I'm not too interested. If you get the full game available for 5 days, then heck yea it's a good deal (but only to buy a month at a time). I could pay $5, play the entire game in 5 days, then not have to spend another cent more. That would be amazing.

How much saving is enough saving?

And if you read, you would have seen they said the trials will be diffrent from game to game.
So yeah its plausible you could get a trial that is the full game for 5 days, they said saves transfer over to the full game, so probably you will get a good portion of the full game and then reach a point where the full game is needed to continue.....or they could level cap you very weak.

Its going to differ from game to game.

The used market for old sports games isn't too high. No sports fan will want to play play an old version of a sports game. EA banking on getting non sports gamers into their games and buying ultimate team packs. Then potentially buying the new version of said sports game.

If they automatically put the previous years sports titles in the vault each year, then this is worth it for those who are happy to wait.

I stopped buying FIFA after 10, so I assume EA is trying to grab me. Not sure if I'll bite. Possibly.
