Giant Bomb #8 | It's a Hit!

You skipped way past the actual hilarious information, that he didn't know aluminum cans were recyclable until he moved to San Francisco. He slipped that one in there and nobody addressed it.

I think I took that as in SF, you have to recycle everything, where as in Minneapolis or whatever, there is no recycling program and people just throw all their garbage into one giant pile like savages!

But maybe it's funnier if you take that as Dan not knowing about recycling at all. lol

He knew about recycling, but was a bit iffy on the deatils ;)

I imagine it's probably that somebody made some kind of snarky comment when they saw him throw a can in the garbage. More that he's been forced to remember to recycle since moving to San Francisco, but the idea that he wasn't aware the most recyclable thing can be recycled is too funny to give up.

I was listening to the podcast in my office today, I share it with somebody who doesn't care about video games at all and she was fascinated enough to ask me to unplug my headphones. I hope CBSi realizes the potential of what they have on their hands.

To say the least. lol

Heck, I bet the CBSi office has recycling policies, given that everyone seems to drink beer and coke out of cans all day over there. Maybe over at GI, they just threw everything into the trash.
But yeah, let's assume he doesn't understand how aluminum works!

I wonder if there's some secret other thing not related to video games or wrestling that Dan is way into or knows a shit ton about. Like, stamp collecting or anaesthesiology or something.

Did the TLoU:R quick look have spoilers in it? Want to watch it but it being 1 hour spooks me into thinking they might give something away.

They mention two later game locations as they play some early game stuff, but say nothing about them or what happens there. They play some of the prequel DLC, but it is a very small portion of it. They play some multiplayer too.

It is a good QL to experience how the game looks and plays on PS4 without showing to much.

I hope that in his nightlife he is an astrophysicist and works with Neil deGrasse Tyson.
(In between playing Bingo of course)

Snooker > pool

Seriously, like one of these days when some random physics trivia pops up in a game, he's gonna nonchalantly bust out some formulae, and start talking about meters per second per second.

The only persons Job I'm kind of afraid for is Alexis.
And that's based on absolutely nothing, other then him maybe being a part of gamespot kinda IDK.

He's like the lead engineer of the group now. If he leaves, it'd probably be to join Dave on his thing more than anything else.

Dan thinks Europe does not play Pool.... WE ARE KICKING YOUR ASS AT IT

So has Alex been cut or not?

Because without him GB NY and any future Vinny content is basically dead and I dont want that.

Why do people think Alex has got cut in "Gamespot Resuturing and Layoff," maybe if it is "CBSi Layoffs," it would time to worry, but these only affect Gamespot. Not Gamefaqs, not Metacritic, TV,com, LastFM, or Metro Lyrics, and not Giant Bomb

Oh yeah, I totally forgot that this came up on the podcast as well.

Dan has never heard of composting.

I think this is going to become a new obsession of mine. I wonder if he has velcro shoes because he's too lazy to tie shoe laces.

He probably wore Kleenex boxes as shoes for a year or two before he realized it was bad for his feet.

Mario Party Party was so good, you guys!

It sold me on the idea and concept of "Dan Ryckert." I think I've finally passed the I-hate-the-new-guy phase.

It's time to enjoy content again.

What? No, he's fine. He's renamed himself "a colossal bummer" for weeks now.

I think it was around the time of one of the Malaysian plane crashes. I could be wrong on that but I recall him posting about the crash news giving him anxiety attacks and the like. It's definitely not related to the layoffs.

I'm about to watch 3 hours of Mario Party. Should I expect Fortune Street levels of greatness?

IMO, yes. It's an emotional rollercoaster.

Tom McShea got the axe too. Some people will be delighted by that.

So far that is two writers that mainly produced reviews. I wonder if their video reviews are going to be the focus from now on.

does the Fortune Street video take a while to get good or something? I've tried watching it a couple of times and ended up giving up, but I probably never gave it more than half an hour.

Justin Calvert and Ryan MacDonald? Holy shit.

Also, I thought Ryan MacDonald didn't work for Gamespot anymore, but was a part of CBSi?

No. They refer to a few later encounters, but nothing story-related.

Great to know, thanks guys! Guess I'll be watching it very soon. :)

Holy shit, Ryan? He was probably the most senior person there in terms of tenure. I mean, apparently he was in charge of esports now (Gamespot had esports??) but still.

I noticed that Calvert is gone as well. Damn man. Old Gamespot is basically dead now.

Now i see why Alex would let out that sigh on Twitter tbh (providing he wasn't let go as well), those guys have been there for a long time.

RE: Old gamespot people

Did Ricardo Torres every do anything noteworthy since he left a few years ago? Havent heard anything from him so I assume he is consulting.

edit. Justin Calvert as well?

Jeez they are really are making deep cuts

I don't think I've heard from him since he left the co-EiC position...

I always hoped for some more retro gaming stuff with him and Jeff. That sucks.
I think he was mostly managerial at that point, being one of the more senior people on the site. But yeah, it would have been nice to have seen more of him.

Yeah, no kidding.

Gamespot has so many staff members that until now I had no idea Justin Haywald was working at GS.

Ryan and Calvert have been there so long that it seems to be a major rethink at GS, rather than the periodic cost trimming.

Also. All those young females and minorities that claim they get passed over for jobs? Half a dozen more experienced writers just hit the jobs market so it is only going to get more brutal out there.

CBSi games division is a sinking ship

GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN GIANTBOMB

GET OUT
and take Danny with you, love that guy

I actually mixed him up with Giancarlo Varanini, probably because I know them both through GB.

MacDonald and Calvert were basically the last of the old guard from when I frequented GameSpot. Hope they (along with everyone else affected) find something good.

I didn't think anything could have replaced Phantasmagoria as my favourite single Giant Bomb video, but this Mario Party video is getting pretty fuckin close.
