Giant Bomb #8 | It's a Hit!

does the Fortune Street video take a while to get good or something? I've tried watching it a couple of times and ended up giving up, but I probably never gave it more than half an hour.

Give it time, it's a slow burn but part 2 is fucking amazing, though you won't appreciate it's greatness without part 1's buildup.

CBSi games division is a sinking ship

GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN GIANTBOMB

GET OUT
and take Danny with you, love that guy

OnGamers seems pretty dead too. But that's more because of the whole Reddit thing than anything else. I didn't think one single employee can fuck over his employer as much as that guy did when he tried to manipulate Reddit's upvote system.

edit: Hope "new guy" is okay. His tweet about this doesn't say much at all: https://twitter.com/gvaranini/status/494605277761503232 (I'm guessing he is okay).

What is OnGamers? And what Reddit thing? I've heard absolutely nothing about either of them.

I remember Jeff's iron-clad logic that shitty pizza would sit in the stomach like a rock and provide a slow release of energy as it digested. Which he immediately proved wrong.

Honestly, there is no worse food for all nighters than pizza. Especially shitty pizza.

Lots of small snacks is the way to go.

It was CBSi's esports initiative. They hired a bunch of esports personalities (Cyborg Matt of Daily Dota fan among them) to cover all things esports. They did okay, but relied heavily on being linked from Reddit for clicks (half of their traffic came from Reddit). They recently got banned from Reddit for at least a year because someone at the site tried to manipulate Reddit's upvoting system one too many times. They're now figting to stay alive.

They may be doing better lately because they've been getting around this by linking to a twitter post with a link to the article, or to a youtube video rather than linking directly to the site. Even though it's not a direct link to the site they've been hitting the frontpage of some subreddits they used to rely on.

You'd think keeping current with new games and consoles would be a requirement for someone in a prominent position in a video game website, but Drew eeks by on his Halo and mobile game knowledge. I think it's somewhat unprofessional of him to make claims about this generation of consoles when he has so little experience with them. Sure, he's probably played around with them in the office, but not to the extent where I would trust or value his opinion on anything PS4/Xbox One related.

You should report him to the authorities.

Okay. And Reddit allows that? Cool if true. I have absolutely no interest in the site or esports, but it's a shame if people lose their job over bullshit like that.

It's crazy that when things at GB are supposedly going better than ever (didn't they have like record traffic for their E3 stuff?) Gamespot is facing layoffs.

Sympathy for all those affected.

I imagine so, it's not against the rules to link to twitter or youtube. It's a loophole, but reddit has no real way to stop it. It would be a ton of work to police every single twitter and youtube link in the chance that it might somehow be connected to a banned site. It's a clever way of getting around the ban, and i hope it's enough to keep people's jobs.

It's CBSi's eSport site, they were banned from reddit, which is terrible for a site like that.

Oh wow, thanks for the info you two.

GAF is my news source, and I guess I was away when this went down... or something. (There's no way this news would be overlooked.)

The problem is that very few subreddits had an issue with it. For example the Dota2 reddit mods were pissed because they had no say in it whatsoever as this was a global reddit moderation issue. So most likely the subreddit mods won't care and will probably encourage it because the subreddits actually very much like most of the content produced by the site, and the users themselves weren't happy they would potentially be missing out on some of the content.

It makes sense that not everybody agrees with it. You look at the sort of shit that floats to the top at Reddit enough and soon you start to wonder why exactly the site chases away content creators.

Ok, that makes sense. From what I could gather, OnGamers was a pretty big source of news for the different esports subreddits, so I would imagine them not being too happy with it. Even if they did this shit multiple times, from what I could gather Reddit's blanket ban seemed a bit draconian (but I guess they have to take a stand somewhere, manipulation of Reddit by different site is a huge problem).

That was so utterly amazing it's almost a shame to spoil people who haven't seen it yet.

MPP was an epic struggle of nostalgia, personalities, and wills as they fought tooth-and-nail for every star and coin in the game. :jeff was destined to win - always bet on green.

Holy shit.

I guess that means people like Waters and Haywalt are considered video people?

Yeah, I think they're trying to turn GS into GB now. But at that point, you might as well just merge the two sites.

I guess I would have noticed if it happened, but I assume Alexis is ok. I know he doesn't exclusively work for Giantbomb anymore, if at all.

Well, aren't you then just left with another GS, too many employees for one site? I highly doubt it. They would never drop the GS name, too much Google traffic and history there. And merging GB into GS would probably mean that they'd lose the subscription money. GB runs with a pretty lean staff too, so CBSi wouldn't get to cut much there either. No dice. Jeff has pretty much said that he'd leave if they ever tried to do something like that, and I wouldn't be surprised if at least Brad, Vinny and Alex does too. I'm guessing that nothing has changed there, it doesn't make much more sense to merge the sites now than it did when CBSi bought GB and everyone feared it would happen within the year.

He's a CBSi designer. Nothing directly to do with either GS or GB.

Is it unreasonable to think that, aside from good traffic, these GS layoffs mean that Giantbomb is actually even safer than before since a) it's become clear CBSi seems to prioritise video content at this point and b) they're probably done with downsizing (aka saving money) for now.

Not saying GB was in any kind of danger, of course. Also not trying to put a positive spin on the story, just looking at it from a GB (business) perspective.

GB just hired two people. GS laid off a bunch of people. I think you're right on the money.

edit: Crypt of the NecroDancer QL coming up tomorrow. DDR or bust!

Things obviously change. I mean, he probably came to CBS because John Davison was there to make it sound like a good idea. And he's what? Approaching his 40s? Is he going to try to do another start up (and anyone starting a blog is basically trying to get bought by AOL/HuffPo at this point)?

A couple of years ago, it made perfect sense to fit GB and GS into a game group. But if both sites are going to do the exact same thing, it seems entirely redundant. Hell, even IGN finally realized this and killed Gamespy and all their extraneous brands because it made no sense to have all those people.

I think they tried to hybridize Gamespot when they began Professional Wednesdays, but the audience was having none of it, or wasn't engaging in it the way they had hoped so they backed away from those plans. Or maybe they were trying to convert Giant Bomb users into Gamespot users through osmosis.

But after these layoffs at Gamespot, I have no idea what will happen. GS has a much higher overhead and flow of content doesn't it? I can't imagine they'll be able to keep it up after such immense layoffs. Which begs the question, where will they go from here?

NinjaEdit: Oh and that OnGamers Reddit manipulation stuff is bananas. They thought they'd prove to CBSi that there's an audience for a single esports destination by manipulating Reddit's userbase? What a bowl of bananas.

I think the Wednesday show would have been fine, but it was clear that none of the GB guys wanted to do it, since they only want to play the games that they want to play and not every single game that comes out a certain week.

That said, people keep talking about Danny as if he's part of the crew, so clearly they don't mind crossovers if they fit.

Well, who knows. Might be wishful thinking on my part, but I doubt it'll happen anytime soon. Might see more crossover, but to kill either the GS or the GB brand? And for what? Unless they're firing Jason and Drew or something (the video guys), I don't see much money saved in doing that. And it ensures that the subscription model is basically dead if they do that. I just don't see it making more financial sense to merge than to keep them seperate, even if both sites begin to do more of the same thing (I still believe that GS will focus a lot on the written part of the site and do a lot of reviews since a huge part of their traffic comes from Google, but they'll mainly do that with freelance people from now on).

I don't mean to revel in layoffs by any means but it is legitimately crazy to put it in perspective like that.

It's not like CBSi is gonna start treating GB like its new golden child but just look at how far we've come. I still remember the thread of here when it was announced that GB was moving. People were losing their minds and basically acting like the site was as good as done.

Just read some user comments on the Mario Party video. Some Giant Bomb fan's are crazy and take things too seriously. It's a group of guys playing video games lol.

Eh, some people take everything too seriously. Most of the comments were crazy positive, but of course some people were gonna complain that Dan was taking it too seriously and dumb shit like that. That's half of why the video is so fucking fantastic!

edit: Expecting a John Drake Bombcast next week, since Brad was talking to him on Twitter a week or so ago talking about him coming on the podcast soon. Both Jeff and Danny are out on vacation, so it's Drake Time!
And Jeff Green time!? And maybe :D time?!

I don't mean killing a brand. I mean way more crossovers, to the point where you could post videos on the front page of both sites.

I assume they would need to have GB people on shows like The Lobby to make up for the people that are lost, if they are even still going to keep making a new release show.

Absolutely. Danny just fits in as one of the gang. The Wednesday show didn't work both for the reasons you said and because some of the people they were playing games with weren't great fits. Let's play God of War Ascension with a guy who's a bit robotic on camera, there's nothing interesting about that. Danny O'Dwyer playing Hatoful Boyfriend, now we're talking.

Oh wow. GS was hollowed out. 2 editors left. 2.

Are we sure no on game Giant Bomb was cut? We would know by now right? RIGHT?

2 written editors. There's still more video editors left, like Danny and Watters.

And yeah, no one at GB has been affected. Wouldn't make much sense to approve 2 new hires, and then lay off people a month later :)

Oh yeah, that totally makes sense and I'd be all for it. Some GB fans want to keep GS out of GB at all costs, but I'd have no problem with more crossover stuff as long as it fit with the site.

And by more crossover stuff I mean MORE DANNY!

Danny fits.. somehow. He has the right mindset and personality for it, I guess. Like, for example, when he brought that old top-down war game, it was obvious that it was a game he had a history of enjoyment with, and he knew a great deal about it - it made the segment fun and interesting to watch.

Professional Wednesdays always felt so forced when I saw it - it had a very rote and artificial presentation. Plus, the Gamespot guys had no charisma at all during the show; I don't know if that is just how they are or what, but it made the whole thing very unwatchable. All in all, there just seemed to be nothing interesting or fun about the event, and it always made PW seem like a corporate attempt at merging the GS and GB audience, instead of something made for the audience.

(Wild speculation, but:) PW might have been received differently if Danny was there. Just a hunch.
