Legend of Korra Book 3: Change |OT| SCHEDULEBENDING

I want Asami to be the one to
break them out of Earth Kingdom custody, since Korra is strapped down too tight to do any bending (or at least that's the implication)

Although, regarding the fight in tonight's episode, I can't be the only one who is really annoyed with water bender lady, can I? I assumed bending was supposed to involve some actual bending via the limbs. But she doesn't have limbs, how exactly is she even doing the initial bending to summon her water arms? All of the 4 are kinda bullshit, but she is the worst.

It's been shown since the original series that
a skilled enough bender can control his or her own element with simple gestures, as we saw with Bumi.

The guy withstood interrogation for 13 years. I don't think he's going to stand down because Tenzin comes down and talks to him. That'd be so stupid.

And for the record, just because various monks consider peace and enlightenment synonymous, there are plenty of different schools that notably don't. I would never expect all air nomads to be peaceful and virtuous, because monks are still people.

Also, Suyin may not like the earth queen, but you shouldn't forget that she too is a leader of a city.

Well that's the point in the series when it is revealed that
Tenzin has inherited the "Talk no Bending" skill

Amon learned to blood bend with his mind.

If Tenzin comes w/ that TnJ bullshit I hope Zaheer throws him into orbit.

Anyway, this ep was aight. Not thrilled about Nick's struggle stream. Korra has the nuttiest villains. Zhao & Azula just wanted to run shit.

An episode where Asami is somewhat relevant? Gaf am I dreaming? My heart can't take this. Joking aside I think that the Red Lotus motivation is stupid and that there's more to it

Gonna lube myself up after work and prepare to embrace korra tonight!
hrmm

Legend of Korra Season 3, Episode 9

So we begin the online era of the Legend of Korra, which is such an ignominious fate for the season that has been rehabilitating this series and this episode continues the trend. We finally get the much needed backstory on Team Zaheer and I am not going to lie, it continues the trend of disappointing Korra villain back-stories. Really, the whole thing can be summed up by the fact that he is
basically Vandal Savage from Young Justice, seeking to exterminate the old orders so that humanity may reach new potentials. Also, really felt the dark hand of retcon with the whole Red Lotus and Unalaq connections. Also, still not sure why the need Korra since showing her a new path really isn't an option, plus she is already doing fine as an agent of chaos as it is. At any rate it is nice that Mako for the first time this season actually justifies his existence by bringing his police skills to to tail the traitor. Also, it is indeed about time that the Earth Queen subplot get back into focus and it looks like Korra is ready for a trip to Arkham Asylum. Still, I think I can already guess the end result here and that Hell is coming to Ba Sing Sae.

Good episode.

Well, aside from
Asami being useless. Mako and Bolin at least pur up a fight, but she just gets instantly snatched up by the Earth Queen's fodder soldiers. I hope she gets to actually do something revelant soon.

asami's going to have a moment next episode

i have faith in goddessami's power

There wasn't really much she could do to counter a surprise earth bending enclosure.

if only she had a powerful company at her disposal to help her invent new and wonderful technologies that would give her some even footing against benders

oh well

If one thing the Avatar series has taught me is that if you're a non-bender you might as well not show up to the important fights. Ty lee and Mai were really the only exception to this rule

Zaheer is powerful beyond reason. He's probably the best air bender in the world ( lol well only Tenzin would have had more time to be better than him), but I say that even comforted to the time when air benders were still around. He can even go into the spirit world. A feat that during Aangs time was supposed to be extremely rare. Not only that, he can project himself and travel anywhere in the spirit world on the fly. He can also talk with his physical body while his spirit is in the spirit world.

Lol I mean come on now.

Yeah I'm going to agree with you on that one. The power creep is getting ridiculous. It's one thing for Zaheer to be randomly granted airbending, since most everyone is getting airbending, but for him to freely and easily do what you're describing just puts it over the top. I doubt they'll even explain why he can do all of that so easily.

Asami should be able to do crazy shit with her mechanical inventions. Doesn't have to stop at her electric hand thing, she can have a bunch of different gloves for a bunch of different things to combat bending, like one with cables that specifically go for the opponent's pressure points like Ty Lee.

But it's Asami. We all know she ain't doing jack shit through the whole show. She's only ever existed to be a convenient plot device, to get people to places or be the object of half-assed love interests.

So is the only way to watch Book 2 at this point to pay for the episodes/season on DVD or a download service?

Why do you think he can do it easily? He is what, 40? You can bet he has been training himself in spirituality for a long time. Just because he couldn't bend doesn't mean he didn't have a spiritual connection.

Because those abilities are unprecedented in range and ability. Things not even Tenzin, Jinora, or Korra can do, and there's no lead-up or hint about those abilities or how he could've acquired them. He's just doing OP shit because he's a villain and we're supposed to fear him. Simply assuming he did some spirituality in some vague period of time in his past doesn't explain away
god-tier spirit world connections
that just show up without context.

Thank you for giving Asami some screen time. Thank you.

As for Zaheer,
I lol'd when he tried to salvage Unalaq, as for what he wants it's obviously a world that pre-dates Wan's since the Lion Turtles can be considered governments of a sort, right? I mean, Wan had a shitty life because of rich aholes that still existed back then. But what would they need Korra for? To rip Raava out?

I actually really enjoyed the tie in with
Unalaq. It was less to flesh out Unalaq and more to flesh out the Red Lotus and what they've done and how far they've spread. It also shows how within this anarchist group, there is anarchy. There are multiple ideals being floated around in this group that don't necessarily work with each other. Sure, Unalaq didn't really believe in it, but there seems to be an implication that there may be other members who perhaps don't have the same goal as others and this may lead to their downfall.

I also liked that they used the tie-in with Unalaq to juxtapose the different ideals between the villains this season and last season.

I really hope that
Unalaq's involvement will be a segway into his wife's introduction and more development for Eska and Desna. Please!!

But those abilities have been shown before.
Recall Jinora was able to teleport and find people by sensing their energy or whatever it was that she did to find Kai. He seems like one of the most spiritual characters in the LoK series(ignoring Iroh and Unalaq). The leader of the Red Lotus, Xai Bau, and Unalaq were both incredibly spiritual and he followed one and worked with another. His master/leader/founder of the Red Lotus has his own grove in the spirit world. Considering he and the Red Lotus hold high regard for the Spirit World and seem pretty deep into spirituality it does seem likely that he was able to access the spirit world. Especially when he was locked in prison for 13 years meditating.

Man Mako & Bolin ain't shit. At least not compared to Katara, Zuko, and Toph. Were Katara and Toph really that abnormal in bending ability? I don't think I've seen Mako & Bolin not get beat down yet, in any season. I feel like Suyin's kids could've handled that shit. Or maybe it's just because basically everyone Mako & Bolin have fought so far have been basically the top benders in the world.

Anyway, this show seems to be following early modern world-type themes. The current Earth Queen is already obviously channeling China's last major monarch before it transitioned into democracy and then communism. And the whole show takes place in an era basically equivalent to the early 20th century (the same time as China's transition).
Zaheer and even Korra seem to understand it's might be time for such old systems to end, but where they differ is on the alternatives. Zaheer seems to see anarchy as that answer (maybe like some early 20th century anarchists?).

As far as combat goes, Zaheer hasn't gone up against anyone trained in airbender combat, either offense or defense. No one in over a century has had to know how to fight an airbender, so that probably gives the few existing airbenders the advantage of unpredictability. I'm still not calling bullshit until I see Zaheer go up against an actual airbender like Tenzin or Jinora.

As for spirit walking, that seems to require a different set of knowledge than bending, and Zaheer already seems very in-tune with the spiritual side of bending.

Mako & Bolin are average benders. They arent supposed to be getting Ws vs the people they've fought against so far in the series.

Sticks are uncool.

Asami needs electric dual blades.

those dont work either because she cant really give anybody the ~business~ with a cutting weapon

i want her to give the Earth Queen some of the old ~police brutality~ with an electric nightstick, nahmsayin?

It's quite clear Korra's writing is more hamfisted at pushing its themes down your throat.

First season is
obviously equality.
Second season is
peaceful co-existance
Third season is
corrupt government and ABSOLUTE FREEDOM

I doubt there is any way to salvage this show. It looks beautiful and the fights are well animated. The story is just so stupid. The characters are stupid. Motives are stupid. Enemies are stupid.

Amon has the most depth to any of the villains so far. It would have been better if his arc was brought throughout the entire series. Instead we get dumb retcons after retcons.

Avatar: The Last Airbender had its shit moments but its shit moments were still better than this.

While Toph's earned her spot as a bending prodigy; I kinda always felt Katara's abilities were bullshit compared to all of the regular benders. She went from barely able to bend a puddle to a water bending master capable of training the Avatar in a matter of days.

thats interesting speculation about where the conclusion of this season might be headed. I could see something like Democracy or a new government order established at least in the Earth Kingdom where the people are suffering. It could be something similar to her compromise with last season realizing there was some truth to what the opposition is saying. Although it would be nice if for once the villian didnt have to be obliterated and could be eventually reasoned with.

Her talent actually first surfaced in the first episode. She is the one, remember, who accidentally broke the iceburg that revealed the Aangsicle. I think that was before they got the bending mechnics down 100%, but it just bends the rules, doesn't break them, and it foreshadows her talent.

Over arching themes are supposed to be very obvious. It's how they're executed that makes a show good or bad (or a bit of both).
