Destiny - Is the game worth it for the solo campaign?

I'm mostly a single player gamer. Epic space operas with story driven SP campaigns are really my thing. I play them at my own pace and enjoy the feeling that I'm not really dependent on any co-op partner to get the most out of them. Do people think Destiny is worth buying for the story and campaign alone? I'm sure I'll try a strike or two with a friend but I really just want to play through the campaign and move on to the fall games. I'm undecided on whether Destiny would be any good for that.

I tried the open beta and there was really to little to let me make a decision. I loved the visuals, music and gunplay. The little story and dialog available left me feeling a bit ambivalent.

i hope so. bungie are supposed to be fps wizards, so probably.

wasn't halo a landmark for single player fps games? i bet they'd like to keep that pedigree.

Yeah probably. I'll be playing it solo apart from the Strike missions and, obviously, PvP. I doubt they would invest the time they have into the lore and the world building if it wasn't worth taking it all in. And I'm sure you can take it all in on your own just fine.

So far the campaign is nothing too special alone but that's just the tip of the iceberg, we shall wait for the full game and see. Game mechanics are well done enough to sustain a solo player.

I imagine the main "story" isn't very long, probably along the lines of a Halo Campaign. The
Beta had plenty of missions and areas to fuck around in solo, so you'll likely find $60 worth of fun in it.

If you've played and enjoyed Halo1,2,3,ODST, or Reach, you'll likely enjoy Destiny.

We dont know and anyone saying otherwise is lying. However this is the first of many games so dont espect to kill al the bad guys and save the universe.

I would play the "wait and see" approach for this one as far as the campaign is concerned. While I enjoyed the beta immensely and will be purchasing the game when it comes out, the single-player story telling and rather generic mission design still have me a little bit concerned.

Probably not. It sounds like the Story segment is going to be pretty short. The combat, story, and scenario design will more than likely not match Halo.

This is a game for people that enjoy loot grinding and multiplayer co-op. I would expect the singleplayer elements to be mostly perfunctory.

It's also worth considering that even in singleplayer you will be hitting a bunch of content that is tuned for 1-3 players. You will be facing off against a lot of crappy bullet sponge enemies that you have to empty 50 clips into because they still wanted them to be a challenge for groups of 2-3. That alone will serverely detract from the solo experience.

I think buying Destiny only for the campaign or only for PvP is a waste of money or a waste of time... There is so much more to discover in the game...

I think we have to wait and see. So far all we have is (a lot of) speculation. I think it's worth, but I have no idea, as everyone else in this thread.

Feel similarly.

Destiny is giving me the same feeling that I felt prior to Halo 3 coming out. I was really excited for the conclusion of the arc and they pushed the "epic" Master Chief story part HARD in their marketing materials / commercials. The game turned out to be very shallow story wise and very little of the interesting world-building parts get covered in-game.

Very skeptical until I have real-world impressions. I'm keeping in mind: As much as this feels like Mass Effect, it is not Mass Effect. My expectations are being kept in check this go around.

Maybe, but I know it will be with strikes and PVP. I get the feeling you'd be locking yourself out of the endgame if you don't have multi.

I'd say trust about 55% of opinions on this site when it comes to Destiny, it has a motherfucker of a marketing budget. And no, this is in no fucking way worth $60 for a single player experience.

Played the beta solo and had a fantastic time.

I did too mostly, I did the strike (which was a lot of fun), but I think the array mission at the end of the beta campaign was the most fun I had in the game. So intense. The combat music is fantastic and I love the audio cues you get when shit is about to hit the fan.

Definitely wait and see.

Personally I felt the content in the beta ranged from poor to mediocre. With a few good moments sprinkled in. It's definitely not worth full price for sp if the beta is indicative of the final package.

If the beta is a proper indicator, then hell no. I'm keeping my expectations in check either way.

I wouldn't worry. The beta was very enjoyable solo. Strike missions worked okay with randoms, I thought. You'll be able to find friends to play Strikes and Raids on GAF, too, for whenever you want.

EDIT:

Damn, where did you get your full copy of the game?

haha, fuck you.

No one knows. Just wait til the goddamn game and reviews and impressions come out before asking silly questions like this.

If by epic space opera you mean melodramatic cutscenes then I think Destiny is going to be one or two notches below Bungie's previous games. At least that's what it seems like from the Beta. Perhaps the story gets heavier as you go.

You won't be able to do Strikes, Raids or PVP (obviously) if you choose to play alone. That's pretty much the end game. Story is a one-and-done sort of thing from the way Bungie talks about it.

It's too early to tell.

I felt the beta was okay. On one hand the world is huge and looks great. On the other hand, I couldn't feel an emotional tie to the characters or feel like the world was lived in.

OF COURSE, IT'S A FUCKING BETA so I should chill. However, I hope Bungie provides more information on the solo experience and what is and is not included for users without PSN+.

With that said, I have some general ideas that could help flesh out the world:

Factions for each class with ulterior motives. In other words, the Titan could have two classes. Titans that want to save the galaxy from this threat like a Master Chef (I know it's Chief but I like Chef so fuck your spelling) and an evil faction that wants to join assist the threat in taking over the galaxy. Another evil side to the Titan could be those that want to colonize the galaxy using violence.

Show me actual enemy encampments and culture.

Add some fucking personality to the classes. What does a Warlock do to relax? Where are the bars? Can we personalize our ships with different load outs, color schemes? Can we create our own headquarters? Make an in-game economy and allow us to talk to friends as we play.

Where's the opposition force to the main threat outside of us guardians?

These are just my ideas and feel free to send them to Bungie. They could include them in Destiny 2.

Finally, we don't know what the solo campaign consists of and are rushing to judgement. It could be great for all we know.

Based on the campaign missions in the beta, no, but as everyone else has said, we'll see. For all we know some of the meatier stuff at the open of the game has been withheld for launch.

We already know this. Strikes, the Raid and PvP are behind the PS+ wall.

Seems decent enough of a solo shooter. Don't believe the hype and think this game is a revolution in the FPS genre or that it will blow you away. It's a polished shooter with ok level design that may have made too many mechanics compromises in order to make it a free-roaming multiplayer shooter, but it will still be a good game.

Don't go into it with the overhyped expectations and I'm sure the game is going to be fine.

All we can do is speculate on the information that has been given to us, and based on the missions we've played, my feeling is no, it will not be worth it for the solo campaign.

In fact, I don't think anything in this game is worth it solo, which isn't a bad thing. The game just isn't designed that way.

I am planning a pure SP run with my main character so I definitely think it is based on the demo. You still have a ton of cool levelling up systems for your character (skills, equipment, focus). It looks like story is relatively secondary to exploration and the levelling/loot system however, especially since this is a 10 year game. I loved the detail of the Earth map so although its disappointing have same map for story mission, its beautifully and atmospherically detailed.

I think of this more like a Borderlands 2 game where its primarily gameplay focused (versus heavy emphasis on story and detailed towns like say Mass Effect.

I'll have a second character to mess around with the MP stufff like strike missions, will never play PVP.

If the entire campaign is like what we had in the Beta... then no.. I dont think so.

If they removed some story cutscenes and if the missions will not be structured as the same thing over and over again, then yes I guess.

Best suggestion would be.. Wait for the impressions.
