Destiny - Is the game worth it for the solo campaign?

Okay, this? This makes no sense. I'd argue that there are too few cutscenes, or at least too few story-centric scenes in general. There were literally no characters in the Beta; at least, none with any personality whatsoever. Why reduce the in-game story context below its already miserable level?

I should have made it clear. What I meant was, that if the SP story in the final game is like the Beta where the cutscenes/story was almost non-existent, then its not worth it.

I should have mentioned Beta in that sentence.

If any of Bungie's games were stripped down to single player/campaigns, I don't think any of them would be worth it outside of the first Halo. They aren't good storytellers and their campaign level design is hit or miss, imo. Based off the first 6 missions in Destiny, that dosen't look like it's going to change.

I'm in the same boat OP and not convinced yet. I managed to grab a go on a friends console and it was fairly fun and I thought it felt polished but it felt lacking from SP perspective.

I'd advise waiting to see how it pans out first post launch - SP can always wait and better to be sure than jump early in those case is say.

I'm conscious the game is a franchise and therefore little of the backstory may ever progress towards a traditional conclusion so as a more SP player I'm approaching with extreme caution in this case.

Probably not. It sounds like the Story segment is going to be pretty short. The combat, story, and scenario design will more than likely not match Halo.

This is a game for people that enjoy loot grinding and multiplayer co-op. I would expect the singleplayer elements to be mostly perfunctory.

It's also worth considering that even in singleplayer you will be hitting a bunch of content that is tuned for 1-3 players. You will be facing off against a lot of crappy bullet sponge enemies that you have to empty 50 clips into because they still wanted them to be a challenge for groups of 2-3. That alone will serverely detract from the solo experience.

I don't think so. The other characters will probably be controlled by the AI so I really see no issue here.

If the majority of Destiny's content won't be able to be enjoyed completely solo, I won't buy it. Which is a shame because I love looting, leveling up and exploring - even if it's repetitious. I poured hundreds of solo hours into Borderlands 1 & 2 and I really hope Destiny will manage to be lonewolf-friendly, despite being multiplayer focused.

Yeah, but we still don't know if in the final game it will be like that. It could like in L4D.

I think it's a very safe asusmption to say we do know, and there won't be AI like that.

There may be a few story missions with friendly AI in the background but I doubt they will ever peplace the fireteam members. The game is built around seamless matchmaking for these parts, it's kind of the entire point of it.

Destiny is for the guilds and clans - a game made to be played with others - Singleplayers will not get the full experience.

Here are my impressions after playing alpha, beta and watching dev interviews:

20 hours of unique single player content. Explore will tack on more non unique-hours.

Endgame begins at level 20, close to the ending of Destiny's 1st story.

Gear keeps the player coming back in endgame.

I wouldn't expect a story driven epic RPG here.

We really need to wait and see, but the content that uses matchmaking so far feels isolated enough that you can pretty much ignore all the social aspects. Playing story missions, strikes, and explore, you have no need to communicate with other players at all, and the lack of actual communication options makes it feel isolated anyway.

The seamless MM means you don't even have to think about looking for others to play with.

If you're a player who needs strong story to support this kind of experience, then we need to wait and see. If you like to move through games like this in isolation and not worry about social options, then Destiny looks set to provide that.

OP doesn't want to rely on others and wants to move through at his own pace, the matchmaking will allow him to do that for the majority of content that we've seen. Raids are the only thing so far that will actually require you to engage with other players socially.

I'm very unexcited about all this loot grinding and leveling up in Destiny. I guess I will have to keep waiting for the next great SciFi SP shooter.

It's in the genre: Shared-World Shooter.

Bungie does not intend for this game to be played by oneself. Phantasy Star Online had the option to do so, too, but I don't know why anyone ever would.

The design of the game seems to be against a good campaign but we wont know for sure. From the beta we saw that looks like crappy story telling found in recent MMOs, where you have open hub like areas for multiplayer, then the story is told in confined instanced zones just for you. Doesn't seem like your going to get much in the form of big set pieces for story telling with this kind of game design. Also the game is not really meant to end, its going to keep going for players and content is going to keep getting added.

Did you even play the Alpha or Beta? Or have read anything about the game? From the outset, Destiny was designed as more of a social/MP game, similar to a MMO. While I am sure the SP will be good, it is not going to be anything like Halo since the focus of the game is more grounded in an MMO type of game.

played both. why start your post with aspersions. why knee jerk into jerkiness.

anyway, it plays and feels like halo. i'm assuming, you know, halo-type gameplay situations. is that so far out of bounds?

If you enjoy bullet sponge baddies, sprawling lifeless maps with dull repetitive indoor maps lacking anything interactive, loot not rendered in the real world, simply small icons that appear on your hud, most of the loot when you equip it looking the same, then this is the game for you! Also there will more than likely be many "defend Y for X waves in this arena", and yea sure it was a BETA but these are all pretty much aspects of the game that won't change just because it was BETA.

It's great how many fanbois are covering their precious game with "IT WAS A BETA GUYS, THIS WILL ALL CHANGE" showing that those people have probably never played a beta before.

Who's saying the large portions of the game is going to change? Where was that stated in this topic. Why the hyperbole?

With the game being this close to release and that far through development, I don't think anyone seriously expects to major changes outside of whatever Bungie decided to not show / withhold from the public Beta. That's pretty much a given.

Based off of what I experienced in the beta, destiny doesn't seem to really have a story at all. I can't tell you who the traveler is, who the antagonists are and what they're fighting. If it wasn't for coop, destiny would be dull IMO. Even PvP is pretty weak compared to COD,Gears, and Halo MP.

Easy.

Traveler = giant space marble.
The Darkness = the flood from Halo/British rock band.
Peter Dinklage = Guilty Spark.

The guardians are the good guys protecting earth from awful music. That's all I know after playing the beta.

My impressions from the Beta were pretty negative. Everything just felt generic and boring. Oh, sure, it looked great but the story was the most basic "Light fights against the Darkness" trope I've seen in sometime. The gameplay had all the negatives that you'd expect from MMOs without much of the positives, so the firefights were pretty "meh". I mean, enemies were just bullet sponges that would occasionally and very casually step to one side or the other, not the dynamic encounters you got in Halo.

i'll get it no matter what, but I'd be more excited to get it if I knew the mythology/sp content will be strong. along with that I hope that "exploring" not only means looting/grinding, but also includes hints to what the traveller/darkness/etc is all about.

bungie made marathon and halo, until proven otherwise I will assume my wishes will come true.

(fake-EDIT: will the raids be available to fireteams of 6 players only or *up to* 6 players? didn't quite catch that.

As long as you have a fireteam of 6 people, you can play Raids.

Current gen is all about the online-only ;)

Destiny's solo mode is the only thing half decent about the game - the competitive multiplayer is grade A trash.

wow...how do you really feel about MP? lol.

All kidding aside, I am more looking forward to grouping with people to accomplish missions etc. versus PVP.

Yep, Destiny isn't really a fun game when you play by yourself, you're meant to play with others, except when farming for glimmer, I've still got the Rocketyard farming path memorised!
