Destiny - Is the game worth it for the solo campaign?

If the Beta is anything to go by, lol no. Hopefully it greatly improves in the retail version. The game is much more fun if you play with others though, I tried playing by myself for some time and I really didn't like it.

I'm a single player gamer too but loved the shared world. I got 10+ hours out of the beta with just what was there.

I imagine the strikes are mandatory to complete the game so if you didn't like that part of it then I wouldn't buy the game just for the other missions. They're too short.

I hope it is, I solo'd Borderlands games and I'm expecting to do the same here. Though I feel the game is even less focused on the story here...

I'm mostly a single player gamer. Epic space operas with story driven SP campaigns are really my thing. I play them at my own pace and enjoy the feeling that I'm not really dependent on any co-op partner to get the most out of them. Do people think Destiny is worth buying for the story and campaign alone? I'm sure I'll try a strike or two with a friend but I really just want to play through the campaign and move on to the fall games. I'm undecided on whether Destiny would be any good for that.

I tried the open beta and there was really to little to let me make a decision. I loved the visuals, music and gunplay. The little story and dialog available left me feeling a bit ambivalent.

Based on the bolded, I don't see why you wouldn't just rent the game or wait for a price drop. That basically goes for any game where your goal is to rush through the campaign as fast as possible.

haha, fuck you.
What the hell was that for?

On-topic; I don't worry too much about the campaign. I like the core lore behind the story and I was interested enough by the small bits of intrigue they introduced (
why are Fallen fighting Hive, who is the Exo Stranger, how did Rasputin survive and what is its goal
) in what little of the story we could play. The mission structure was a bit repetitive, but I enjoyed doing the Story missions regardless. I also did Explore and Strike 'solo' and enjoyed them. You definitely shouldn't expect something beyond a fairly standard campaign though; don't go in expecting something on the scale of Mass Effect or the focused quality of The Last of Us.

My favorite games are RPG & especially scifi RPG, so really there isnt much competition in that space until Cyberpunk 2077 comes out.

I'd prefer more story focus and more single player progression (vs multiple story missions all played on identical maps) but I'll take this over the only other scifi type RPG this year (Borderlands presequel).

haha, fuck you.

is this an insider joke

It's too early to tell.

I felt the beta was okay. On one hand the world is huge and looks great. On the other hand, I couldn't feel an emotional tie to the characters or feel like the world was lived in.

OF COURSE, IT'S A FUCKING BETA so I should chill. However, I hope Bungie provides more information on the solo experience and what is and is not included for users without PSN+.

With that said, I have some general ideas that could help flesh out the world:

Factions for each class with ulterior motives. In other words, the Titan could have two classes. Titans that want to save the galaxy from this threat like a Master Chef (I know it's Chief but I like Chef so fuck your spelling) and an evil faction that wants to join assist the threat in taking over the galaxy. Another evil side to the Titan could be those that want to colonize the galaxy using violence.

Show me actual enemy encampments and culture.

Add some fucking personality to the classes. What does a Warlock do to relax? Where are the bars? Can we personalize our ships with different load outs, color schemes? Can we create our own headquarters? Make an in-game economy and allow us to talk to friends as we play.

Where's the opposition force to the main threat outside of us guardians?

These are just my ideas and feel free to send them to Bungie. They could include them in Destiny 2.

Finally, we don't know what the solo campaign consists of and are rushing to judgement. It could be great for all we know.

there is a bar

If the entire campaign is like what we had in the Beta... then no.. I dont think so.

If they removed some story cutscenes and if the missions will not be structured as the same thing over and over again, then yes I guess.

Best suggestion would be.. Wait for the impressions.

Wait, what am I reading? It would be better soloing if they removed cutscenes? Why?

I really, really hope so, but if what we got in the Beta is any indication, no.

Okay, this? This makes no sense. I'd argue that there are too few cutscenes, or at least too few story-centric scenes in general. There were literally no characters in the Beta; at least, none with any personality whatsoever. Why reduce the in-game story context below its already miserable level?

Pre-beta I would have said yes.
Post-beta I would have to say maybe, who knows.

To me, all the beta did was ask more questions than answer them regarding the solo/single player/campaign stuff.

Eh, I'm really not a fan of calling Destiny's single player experience a "campaign", as this implies it's a fixed, linear story with a plot that has an opening, climax, and a resolution.

From the beta, this clearly isn't the case...especially if Bungie is accurate when they state that the game actually starts at level 20.

Well... the plot clearly has an opening. It's an MMO-ish structure, so that means we can assume about 1 climax per expansion, as things with the particular threat du jour come to a head. And while the ending is very much up in the air, if they really do have a 10 year plan, we can probably assume that we'll get some sort of conclusion then. It's not unreasonable to call it a campaign.

The game feels very grand and Sci fiy but doesn't really have much of a SP feel. There are other players running around all the time. Still though based on what you said I think it warrants a buy. The gameplay and exploration are very fun and enjoyable solo.

No idea, wait for reviews and impressions.

I don't think we should be going in with the expectations of having extremely well-crafted CoD/Uncharted-tier set-pieces though, the game's SP seems to revolve around pre-existing explore spaces and building a story within the confines of what's there for you to return to explore at your leisure later on.

I don't know how good the story/campaign will be, but playing the beta I was really surprised how fun Destiny is even when playing alone. Those five hours I spent exploring the moon all by myself were just magical.

I'd definetly recommend it for lone wolves.

i hope so. bungie are supposed to be fps wizards, so probably.

wasn't halo a landmark for single player fps games? i bet they'd like to keep that pedigree.

Did you even play the Alpha or Beta? Or have read anything about the game? From the outset, Destiny was designed as more of a social/MP game, similar to a MMO. While I am sure the SP will be good, it is not going to be anything like Halo since the focus of the game is more grounded in an MMO type of game.

Not sure about story mode, as I found that mostly boring and only did it as an item on my checklist. Exploration mode is what I'm looking forward to the most. I'll do that to death since I played that the most in the alpha and beta. PEACE.

I'm inclined to say no. Story mode is maybe (very rough and probably incorrect number) 35% of the game's content and I don't think it'd be worth buying the game to play that and only that as a solo player.

The Halo series has had some awesome levels, but some crappy ones as well, so who knows.

From the beta, NO. I'd be pretty disappointed if I played this game solo. It was only made tolerable with other people in the mix. Voice acting and characters were below par, maybe that's a MMO thing? There was nothing to grab onto with the plot or storytelling except for seeing how wacky your dude looks in super-serious cutscenes.

If I'm allowed this comparison, at least Borderlands is still fun solo with varying missions, interesting characters, and having a nice atmosphere. Destiny's is quite dull.

This is what you miss out on:

How would we know? The game is unreleased. I know we all want to create Destiny threads, but it's literally impossible for anyone to know.

If it is not worth it for the solo play, then it is not for me.

I like grouping well enough, but I'll be damned if I'm going to invest in a loot game that flat out requires it.

This is why I love Borderlands 1, but absolutely LOATHE 2.

If you're a fan of good single player FPSs, let me recommend Wolfenstein: The New Order if you decide not to go with Destiny.

I played the Alpha mostly with other people and really enjoyed it, while soloing a bit more of the Beta and enjoyed it far, far less. It's definitely a multiplayer game.

You're going to have to wait until after release for impressions. I think the beta was fun, but I too am worried about the amount of content that will be available to me. I have very little interest in this game's competitive MP and I'm not going to be able to do the raids.

+1

you know what... i'm going to definitively say YES.

i haven't played more than the beta but the campaign will be incredible, because you asked me and this is what i'm telling you.

I'm hoping so...but they really have not talked too much about it and it worries me a little on the single player front...

Bungie did create my favorite video game universe/history/lore with Halo (followed closely by Resistance)... So I don't expect Destiny to quite live up to that...

But I'm holding out hope that they really flesh out the story/universe well...

Hey,

So while we're on the subject of questions that no one can definitively answer yet, anyone know how the script for Avengers 2 will be?

I played all of the beta solo. It's clear some of the level design is meant to accomodate multiple players but I still had a blast.

Strikes might be an issue though.

Or buy wolfenstien now then beat it two times and trade it in for destiny. Wolfenstein isn't a game you keep playing for months on end imho.

Has an early preview of that been released yet that can be judged, like Destiny's beta? Because that's the equivalence here.

That's like asking if a movie is going to be good based on a trailer. The beta was what... 10% of what there is to see? How can anyone make a definitive determination one way or the other based on that.

The OP is mostly interested in the story campaign though, and we're not sure how long the story campaign is or what the future content will consist of: more story stuff or multiplayer/strike stuff.

There isn't even an Avengers 2 trailer yet. The beta contains story campaign elements in it (solo opening mission, cutscenes), it's not just a multiplayer-only beta.

haha, fuck you.

You know, I was going to say "You'll do well, here junior" but realized you aren't a junior member anymore, so wonder how you can justify this sort of reply.
--------------

To answer the OP's question. I played the entire Beta solo with no co-op at all. On the limited time I had with the game being able to do all 5 missions on Earth and the one Mission on the Moon, not to mention several side diversions like Events and Exploration Missions.

Unless Bungie is witholding a crap ton of content in the early portions of the game on Earth, I'll say it's probably safer to wait until some full game impressions on the campaign.

Story mode seem to be very short.

2-3 missions length in Destiny = about 1 mission in Halo.

Destiny has 23 missions. I think story mode will be about 7-10 hours.

First 6 missions in Destiny do not give me any interest in the story but Bungie never fail me about story mode in last 15 years. I hope they won't this time.

Beta may not be indicative of the experience at all. If it is, then his game really requires the social aspects to come alive.

It may not have been though, so no one can say for sure. I would wait or impressions if you really do want to solo.

Saying that, I spent my time levelling my hunter entirely solo and I enjoyed the isolation. Levelling my Warlock in groups was a completely different game. I liked both.
