Resident Evil HD Remaster confirmed for PS3/PS4/360/XB1/PC

they're ps1 games. You can't just up red the assets. They have to be completely remade. No way they do all that work for one release imo.

Hopefully this does lead to us finally getting an re2 remake.
They're remastering the Gamecube game, not the PSOne game.

I'm very sure that's an item which is picked up in my screenshot, but not in the screenshot of new version.

There's a black switch in the top left corner of both screenshots that serves as a point of reference. The map should be seen on both screenshots, but it's not. That item is not there in the original game.

edit: Ah, I just got what you were saying. Alright.

Yeah... Remaster is looking good now.

I kinda expected that they would just upscale the backgrounds. Oh well, I'm just excited that this is finally coming. I don't have my GameCube anymore so it will be nice to play this on a modern system. I've been yearning to play this for so long. Hopefully they port RE0 as well.

I took a shot in dolphin, cropped it, added noise like they seem to be using, and change the hues to be a similar color. This is all stuff that would be pretty trivial to do real time in game.

It seems like they're adding a LOT of contrast to the backgrounds. What used to be noticeable details before is now flat blacks in this new HD one.

The character's textures seem much improved though.

Can you verify your dolphin settings?

I suppose Nintendo will be fine with releasing a Gamecube/Wii Virtual Console version.

oh Nintendo/Capcom. Please get along.

I took some screenshots of REmake in Wii emulator of similar scenes like the official screenshots. Here's what I got:

There's definitely a huge improvement with the character models, and the shading/lighting on the characters is almost entirely different. The new lighting may stand out more in places, but it definitely looks much nicer.

Made some comparison gifs.

For these examples, I rendered at 1280x960 then cropped it down to match the aspect ratio.

4xSSAA (so basically bullshotting the models). AF disabled as it causes a texture seam bug (Also, AF won't benefit this game since backgrounds are prerendered and you don't really get harsh angles on the models).

Great news! One of my favorite games of all time. Hopefully RE0 will be given this treatment as well.

Thanks for taking the time to post those comparison shots. Much more of an improvement than I expected.

Isn't Resident Evil 0 a 3D rendered game? It won't need it anywhere near as much as REMake would.

Appreciated!

No Zero is still just as 2D as Remake is. However alot of the background animations were improved massively in Zero to make it "look" more 3D then Remake did.

I'll grab this for $20, unless they really manage to fuck it up. Don't really care if the IQ is off somewhat if it means I can keep REmake around in my Steam library after the ol' GameCube finally kicks the bucket.

The zombies are much more scarier now :O

Ok that's it... there is clearly an improvement from these Comparison gifs.

edit:
Yay I guess. It will be nice but no one was asking for this.
Are you kidding me? MANY were asking for this for YEARS....

This is actually exciting- I mean, yes it's a remastering, remake, port, etc. but excited to see how they change the control scheme and for how beautiful it'll look/play!

No RE0 is pre-rendered just like REmake, I hope they bring that over too.

Love Resident Evil, but I'm all set here. Played the original PS1 game multiple time. Played REmake multiple times.

If it was a remake of RE2 I would probably be interested.

For what it's worth, the reason the GC screenshot looks so crummy is the games motion blur. It's not great implementation, but in motion it doesn't look that assy. The new version seems to have thankfully disabled it.

Actually the reason it looks that much better there is because the "remaster" looks like it's missing the motion blur effect.

In the other shots, the prerendered backgrounds look noticeably worse.

This is very sad.

Maybe they did lose the original assets after all.

Please God let this sell MASSIVELY well and maybe Capcom will FINALLY REmake Resident Evil 2!

I'm definitely in for PS4 version and maybe PC version. If the PS3 retail version looks nice though I may have to grab that for collections sake.

The producer update version mentions that the screenshots are from the current generation version. I assume this refers to PS3/360.

So maybe the 2015 date for the other versions is because they're doing more work on it to be better?

hopefully, though in truth I think the real reason for the delay is because Capcom likely lost the translation for all the games text and has to re-localize it lol.

Something I've been meaning to point out. I think these are bullshots. In the 'sharpened filter' images people have been quoting, like this one:

a3z4Gih.jpg

Notice how Chris has the exact same effect applied over him like the rest of the screenshot? The image was edited, not the background, and this applies to multiple screens showed here. I think they're bullshots. A pre-render background filter wouldn't effect 3D models, also the game used 3D lighting, so why would the 3D lighting have an image effect of the pre-render backdrops?

That shot in particular looks HORRIBLE. I hope its bullshot.

Seriously what did the people expect? They redo all the backgrounds of the game from the scratch to 1080p ?!

I don't think a lot of people here expect Capcom to completely redo the game (maybe some do). What I would like to see is the original source material rerendered at a higher resolution.

Its possible that the original scene files are gone, but we do know that they had them when working on Umbrella Chronicles. That was 7 years ago of course, but it shows that Capcom did indeed have some archival process in place. If they bothered to archive it in the first place, it would be short-sighted of them to throw them away after that. Plus they clearly used the old character models as a base for the remaster, so they kept those around somehow.

I guess there is a matter of what file format the originals are stored in and the software used to render them back in the early 2000s. But i'd imagine its probably in something fairly standard that could be loaded in a more modern 3d package. Or they could write a script to load an unusual file format.

I'm more inclined to believe that it was something they decided they won't do as opposed to something they can't do. It would take time and money to rerender the scenes but I don't think that its ureasonable to expect that an HD remaster be done right (as in rendered in actual HD).
