nono retro is beautiful if done right, by ugly i mean something like Micromon.

i played that for 2 hours but then it was impossible to go further because i'm colorblind. shame.

Ok, well here's some to get you started, depending on your mood:

Rogue Legacy is a sort of roguelike with elements of castlevania and other platformers. In it, you continually try to delve deeper into the castle, whilst allowing your future generations the benefit of your conquests. Also has hilarious genetically inherited issues that can help or inhibit you. There's even one for colorblindness, since you mention it!

Torchlight II is an amazing action RPG that is reminiscent of games such as Diablo. Tons of loot, well designed overworld, and a great amount of content. Not particularly Nintendo-like though, so this choice might be off color for your tastes.

Fez, to me, was one of the absolute best games of the last generation. It's a platformer game whose integrated puzzle gameplay is so essential that I had to keep a notepad along to keep track of how I was solving them. I found the soundtrack to be sublime, and the visuals are attractively charming the entire time. It's the entire package.

Spelunky is just about the most endlessly addictive action adventure game with platforming elements around. The caves you progress through are randomly generated, and your goal is to try to get to the bottom. Tons of tools, so many secrets your head will spin... it's a constant joy that pushes the art of discovery at every corner.

I've got one. I want a good old fashion beat 'em up. It can be a one vs army style like Dynasty Warriors or it can be in a smaller scale like God Hand or Final Fight. It can be 3D or 2D sidescrolling (preferably 3D) but not top down. The game of course has to have combos and it can't have "retro" graphics.

I concur Brothers was absolutely immense.
Also, anything The Behemoth or Devolver make.
Devolver doesn't make games... And since they're a publisher, nothing they release is technically indie.

Which means Doom doesn't count either, as it was published online by Apogee and in stores by GT (I think it was?).

what are some indies with good gameplay? quite a lot of the ones people recommend are style over substance, they look great but are mediocre at everything else. (prime example: Limbo)
That's a terrible example! Limbo plays perfectly for what it attempts to be. It's a revival of the "cinematic platformer" genre of the 90's, a genre including classics like Prince of Persia and Flashback. Limbo does not attempt to be a fast-moving, agile platformer like Meat Boy or N+ and does not fail at what it attempts to do.

thank you. I will definitely try RL and Spelunky, i tried FEZ and didn't like it same with Torchlight, it "felt" wrong after D3.

I more mean the style of games they publish? Can they not be considered Indie games? In the same vein that there is a whole genre of indie music that isn't technically independent.

I will completely agree with this, but I will need to throw in one massive warning, I'll avoid spoilers but I'll throw a spoiler tag over it anyway for those who want to go in completely blind, which is recommended:

Fez's biggest strength is also its biggest flaw. The game can essentially be broken down into two parts - The platformer-lite collectathon that it tells you it is, and a hidden incredibly complex puzzle game that I loved. The result is that a lot of people play it and completely miss everything good about it.

Yeah but I felt that was kind of intentional in design.
Sort of... you can play the game in a cursory way and still get to an ending, or you can really try to solve what is behind the veil. I thought it was a good way of splitting those who want to take the time, and those who don't. As a platformer-lite alone, though, I'd agree it's not very special, even despite its perspective-changing mechanics.
. Although I probably would have enjoyed it to a degree, just not the way I did.

Anyways, he tried Fez already and it wasn't for him, so that one goes back into the bin for later :D

Really not my area. Keep that in mind as my suggestions might not be great:

If you are more into multiplayer FPS and are also interested in strategy games - Natural Selection 2

If you want more puzzles, something like Antichamber.

If you really want to go crazy, maybe something like Fract OSC.

There are also many, many first person indie horror games.

Natural Selection 2 is a very good recommendation.
One of my favorites.

It is a very tactical team-based shooter and moreover an awesome mix of RTS and 1st person. Getting started is really hard, but the community is just so nice, everybody is really helpful, never experienced so much kindness in any online game.

Hmmmm. Up front I'd probably recommend something like Amnesia, but let me delve a bit further.

Do you enjoy thinking games with puzzles in them? I have a first person game in mind where you do sometimes hold a gun of sorts, but there's not much action in it. It is however the type of game that can bend your mind and make it melt.

I am not the biggest fan of puzzles either. I will check out Hard Reset though.

I love indies but I would still like recommendations. Is that fine?

I'm looking for some FFT/Tacgics Ogre SRPGs. It's my favorite genre by far. Note: I've already played and enjoyed Banner Saga.

While I can't recommend any of these because I haven't played them, I found these on Steam to see if any pique your interest:
Proxy Blade Zero (Gaffer made I believe) - http://store.steampowered.com/app/313980/
Which led to this: Mitsurugi Kamui Hikae - http://store.steampowered.com/app/263620/
Which led to this (has more an RPG element): Coixleur Sigma - http://store.steampowered.com/app/250640/

As for 2D, if you want something like Final Fight, keep an eye out for Mother Russia Bleeds - http://motherrussiableeds.com/

I find it hard to recommend Croixleur. It's not bad, but to me it really didn't feel like there was much of it and I could feel myself getting bored with it fairly quickly.

There's someone from Nyu Media on GAF who I think would be pretty handy to have in this thread.

When I played, my sister used one analog stick on the controller and her right button, and I used the other analog and the left button. It was a tad awkward at first, but we quickly gained control of it and started working in synchronicity. When the story is completed, when it all plays out, the story had extra oomph. It really was effective when you play it like this with someone you love.

I've had this game since forever, never touched it, and now I know how to play it, thank you.

if you're like me and prefer 3d stuff then another decent one is lifeless planet

its a slow paced exploration game based on mars with some platforming puzzles, and a nice creepy atmosphere thanks to the soundtrack and soviet narrative

Might want to give some of Spiderweb Software games a try (Avadon 1 & 2 are the most recent). Graphics are definitely rough, but they're fun RPGs and they have turn-based grid combat (small party sizes though).

Did Blade Symphony turn out to be any good? That could be an interesting recommendation to people who want multiplayer 3D melee (swordfighting) combat.

Brothers is a good one. I played the older brother and I shared the controller with my younger nephew who played the younger one. The game was hilarious with us trying to share 1 controller, something I haven't done since splinter cell chaos theory (what? we where bored...)

End game spoilers:
that fucking ending stabbed us right in the heart. Then that last "jump"....I STILL get goosebumps from how well done that was. Just...oh man. Also fuck spiders.

Super Meat Boy and Thomas Was Alone are two great ones. In a time where I'm trying to get my nephews to play Borderlands 2 or Mario with me they just want to take turns playing super meat boy. The comedy is good but the super solid platforming is unlike anything else.

I also can't wait until more 3D games start popping up. Survival/Horror games will come in spades when that happens. For now Lone Survivor is a pretty great 2D survival/horror that draws a lot from Silent Hill.

Man, I did not realize there was an Avadon 2. I haven't finished the first yet (though I really enjoyed the 20 hours I've put into the game so far). I need to buy that at some point.

That said, I'm not sure about recommending it. Not because they're not good (obviously I like the first), but because even though the combat is pretty similar (grid based combat) a game like FFT is just: battle, upgrade characters, cutscene, repeat. Avadon has traditional town exploration, chatting up NPCs, inspecting a bookshelf and spending too long reading a book, and so on. It's pretty easy to go a couple of hours without getting into a single fight.

If that doesn't bother you then I say it's a fantastic choice, but if you want something in the exact same mold of FFT it's not the best pick.

Right, time for some random suggestions that haven't been mentioned yet, but go against the grain in one way or another. After this I'm off to sleep.

Cloudbuilt

I will start off by saying this game absolutely isn't for everyone. I recommend this to you if you are interested in intricate fast movement, speedrunning, and 3D platforming. Think of it as maybe a mixture of what Dustforce might be like in 3D, and a third person Mirror's Edge. That's not the best way of explaining it, but I'm struggling to come up with a better one.

Cloudbuilt is hard, very hard. When getting familiar with the game it might even feel unfair. There are some enemies that seemingly refuse to die, lasers where you least want them, and complex wall running maneuvers that require incredible precision. To enjoy the game you need to work with that, and you will need to see the enemies not as objects to kill, but as environmental hazards to avoid. Everything feeds into the one goal of the game: getting the best time as possible. Nothing else matters.

But boy, when you learn the game is it fun. I'm no Chezda, mind: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26l1SndpfvE

Crimzon Clover

If you are a fan of bullet hell shooters, especially those by Cave, you should already know about and own this game. Simple as that. It is well made, with a good amount of difficulty, and incredibly fun break mechanic and scoring system.

Legend of Grimrock

You'll want to play this if you are a fan of first person dungeon crawlers. I personally wasn't much of a fan of the grid combat, but everything else was done really well.

AI War: Fleet Command
Not posting a screen of this one, because by my own admission the game looks like shit. If you want to play a very good and unique RTS though it is hard to go wrong.

Just expect difficulty, the game is hard as balls and I still don't feel like I understand it.

Rain Blood Chronicles: Mirage

Valdis Story: Abyssal City
He might also try Dust: Elysian Tail, although that has trappings beyond being a mere combo-based beat 'em up. Not sure how hardfast he is on that.
I've played all of these. They're not what I was looking for but I was entertained by most of them. Valdis Story felt like an inferior Fortune Summoners.

I prefer first person games. I like action and adventure games. Not the biggest fans of platformers.

For anyone looking for a cool first person/action adventure brawler-type hybrid, check out Zeno Clash. Zeno Clash II is especially great, but you really need to play the first in order to enjoy the game's universe/characters. Because I don't feel like re-explaining myself, I dug up my impressions back from my post in the 2013 GOTY thread...made my top 3!

238009_thumb.jpg

3. Zeno Clash II ; I almost completely forgot about this game when creating this list. That's not because it was forgettable or anything like that. No, it's because playing this game was an out of body experience. Even though my Steam profile says I finished it over the summer, I feel like I have already played this game, like in some alternate reality/past life. Zeno Clash is one of the most surreal gaming experiences I've ever had. The original Zeno Clash was a linear, stage by stage, first person brawler. Zeno Clash II, however, provided a seamless, interconnected world with an emphasis on action/adventure and exploration. Part Half-Life, part Breakdown, part god only knows, Ace Team has not only created one of the most fascinating cast of characters, but also has crafted one of the most memorable worlds I've ever had the opportunity to play/experience. I'll take that Zeno Clash III announcement any time this year, Ace. I'm ready for that conclusion!

Actually, I'd like to ask for a recommendation myself as an aside. I've been looking for another point and click adventure game of the Syberia I/II type that I can play with my fiancee as she loved those. We'd prefer something more serious than, say, a Deponia, and with some decent puzzles.

Edit: Oh, and something more recent than 6 years ago. I've played most of the older ones that are any good, and my fiancee likes a more visual title in that regard.

Damn, you had to ask about point n clicks (i.e. the genre I usually don't play...), lol. Not sure if they'd fit your preferances exactly, but some recent point and clicks I have played are

- Botanicula
- Finding Teddy
- Detective Case and Clown Bot in: Murder in the Hotel Lisbon
- Gods Will Be Watching

But that's about it. Of all the possible genres, I tend to enjoy most, but never really found a point and click that really hooked me. My favorite is probably Gemini Rue

Fair warning: the game has its share of technical issues, some of which are still being ironed out. The mechanics are deceptively complex and allow experienced players to pull off some pretty wacky moves. There are plenty of players in-game and on the forums willing to help out newcomers, though. I personally believe the game is worth playing just for the voice commands alone.

Have you tried the Erica Reed series(Cognition)? It is not perfect but good. I did a review for it a couple months ago. A bit X-Files, a bit Fringe. Interesting story and not much to get frustrated about.
Point and click are probably my overall favorite kind of game so I was sort of surprised that Erica Reed ended up entertaining me.

Ten bucks for all the episodes I think. I ended up playing them straight through when review it. Which is super rare for me.

I find it hard to recommend Croixleur. It's not bad, but to me it really didn't feel like there was much of it and I could feel myself getting bored with it fairly quickly.

There's someone from Nyu Media on GAF who I think would be pretty handy to have in this thread.

You probably mean me, who always lurks GAF like a cyborg-ninja. Dem nanomachines.

Anyway, Croixleur is more like Blood Palace from Devil May Cry. It is objective based as well, as in besides the main story goal of clearing the tower (don't wanna spoil but there is a bit more to it) you have a collection of medals that have certain requirements and also a plethora of weapons at your disposal (some to deal with air threats, others for ground and others multi-purpose) for both of the characters. You also kind of keep a combo chain going through the floors of the tower (which is reset if you get hit) so there is a fine balance between risking to get damaged, landing hits, knowing the enemies, knowing when to cancel-out an attack by dashing or attempting to parry a move with your sword. (Although you just strike back instead of performing a riposte ala Dark Souls.) There is also a 2-player test mode, called Dramatic Battle, but unfortunately it's only local. Maybe for the sequel (if it happens) extra depth can be added.

I enjoyed the Time Attack mode best outside of story mode because it keeps you on the edge, comboing and chaining like mad against the clock.

Surprised that Steam didn't throw Fairy Bloom Freesia, the other game by Edelweiss (and my personal favourite). It's more a brawler than a beat 'em up, very, very colourful as well and with a deeeeeeep moveset and combos chaining galore as enemies will crash into each other leading to massive combo chains that you can keep up for extreme badassery. In fact, I think someone at GAF made a gif of that kind of comboing. Hell, advanced comboing in Croixleur also looks badass but perhaps not as flashy as Freesia.

Fairy Bloom Freesia: http://store.steampowered.com/app/214590

Oh, speaking of Crimzon Clover, Danmaku Unlimited 2 is also on Steam and it's freaking awesome as well. Both definitely very ship oriented. In a different vein, you have eXceed 3rd but that enters what can be described as "waifu territory", right? eXceed 3rd was apparently meant to be played in its hardest setting, without auto-bomb in order to face the hidden boss, which in the end leads to a final, secret extra stage that's... Well, it's quite something. You can unlock the secret boss in other difficulties too.
Danmaku Unlimted 2: http://store.steampowered.com/app/280560/
eXceed 3rd: http://store.steampowered.com/app/207400/ (Just ignored the silly name, gotta love Japan for that :p I mean, at least it's not called Egocentric Embroiders, right? There is a doujin game called like that btw.)

OH! And someone mentioned Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, right? I have another 3D game kind of like that (well, because it's also made in Unreal Engine) and that's Papo & Yo. A fantastic, if a bit short game with some nice and strange touches. Easy to clear for the busy people like me!
http://store.steampowered.com/app/227080/

And someone looking for a good puzzler, and I mean a really challenging and interesting one, try LYNE! GAF hyped this to me and I silently bought it. Loved every bit of it:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/214590/

Another vote for Hard Reset too. Hell, I need to go back to it now that I have a PC that can handle it at the highest settings. The comic-book style of the cutscenes is pretty damn awesome too.

edit: seeing it's in a Groupees bundle, while it has its flaws (namely, that it tries to be two different genres at the same time without excelling in neither and some save issues I faced upon release), Ballpoint Universe is something unique. Seriously, I just love that art style and the shmupping (while no Crimzon Clover) was decent enough, just nowhere near as epic as the art style could've allowed. The final battle was nice though. Seriously, give it a try!

Oh boy, I have a bunch of suggestions. I *love* adventure games.
Lets see if I can get linked pictures working:

brokenage_main.jpg

Broken Age, AKA that Double Fine Kickstarter game. It's probably Schafer at his most grounded. The zany is toned down, the visuals look gorgeous, and everything is created to lull you into this universe he created. Voice acting is top notch, though puzzles are on the easy side. Part 2 is coming... sometime...

blackwell-legacy-2.jpg

The Blackwell Legacy
The Blackwell Unbound
The Blackwell Convergence
The Blackwell Deception

A quintilogy of games (to be played in the listed order), by Wadget Eye games, (who published Gemini Rue (also check that out) about a psychic detective. Set in real world New York (and all images are sourced from photographs made by the designer), you must figure out how to let ghosts "move on" to the other side. Puzzles are really good, and rarely use inventory items, but rather clues, that you can combine, and dialogue and contextual items.

kentucky-route-zero-farmhouse-interior.png

Kentucky Route Zero

Just... play this game. There are no puzzles, but man, I have never played a game quite like it. It's an interactive play when it boils down to it, dialogue is presented like a script, stage directions introduce and close scenes and dialogue, and dialogue options can shape your version of the story, but never shape the story itself, just the backstory of the characters. Gorgeous visuals, outstanding music, and the best sound design I've ever heard period. Being released in 5 parts, 3 of which are out now, and 2 "standalone" games: Limits & Demonstrations, and The Entertainment are free on kentuckyroutezero.com, and tie into the main game pretty heavily

I like indies as I like any other games.

I would love if someone made a list of good Metroidvania games for Wii U and, if possible, another for 3DS.

My priority is the Wii U because I've been smuggling it into my work, with my backpack, and I often play it on my lunch time thanks to Off TV.

I've tried a handful and not really liked any of them, with the notable exception of Shovel Knight. Mostly due to the Mega Man vibes and Virt.

Should I do a write-up on Shovel Knight to be considered for the contest, or should I try something else that's recommended ITT? As far as genres go I like platformers (I did beat Thomas Was Alone and did not like it), action games, adventure games, point and click, and JRPG.
